Last fall, Paul Fosse cited four reasons why producing the Model 2 in Texas made sense: Tesla has a wealth of technical talent in Austin that would be difficult to relocate to Mexico; Tesla has encountered no issues obtaining permits in Austin, and construction there has progressed rapidly; Tesla already has critical infrastructure in place in Austin and could test production in an existing building; and the company could quickly erect a "tent" structure if more space is needed, as it did previously in Fremont.

Recent reports from Electrek suggest Giga Texas currently has the capacity for at least 2,000 vehicles per week since the Model Y Long Range started customer deliveries, with other sources indicating as many as 5,000 cars per week rolling off the lines. This prodigious production capability bodes well for a swift Model 2 ramp.
