This is the most honest vlog I've seen from a Tesla guy. It's definitely a different way of traveling having to plan so much around where your next charge will be from and how far and how fast you can go. Thanks for the video.

As a dad who road tripped to Highlands, NC this weekend (lotta Teslas in town), I was so thankful to be able to relax tonight and watch the latest installment from my couch after our trip! Thank you guys for giving me a fantastic way to decompress! Lastly...not only does Alyssa share in workload, driving, camp prep, dog care, etc.; she also eats cold pizza for breakfast! My God man, this travel series better end with you on one knee if you know what I’m saying! Continued safe travels and keep the content coming!!!

The fencing behind the supercharger in Big Sky was a snow fence. In areas with snow, and winds, snow drifts are a real pain. A snow fence creates a controlled location for the drift to occur so it doesn't occur right on the line of superchargers, requiring them to be shoveled out manually.

Happy Bolt owner here: You’re right about the charging rates. Epic road trips like this need 250kw for an adventure. 55kw would be an ordeal. Day trips are fine.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 4 года назад
It's not that bad, there are quite a few people that have road tripped in a bolt. The bolt only charges at 55 kW however it maintains that peak charging rate till about 55%. there is a guy who did a cannonball run solo in a bolt EV I believe it took him 72 hours to go cross country including his sleeping time. So it is definitely possible to do it. But since there are far more Tesla superchargers I would say finding the charging locations would be the largest challenge and something you would have to definitely plan for. I think if I was going to do it myself I would put a small hitch on the back of the car and take a small gas generator with me just in case I screwed up. plus the gas generator could be handy if you were going to camp someplace without power. You can check out the RU-vid channel News Coulomb. he runs long distances in California and has no charging at home. Relying exclusively on public charging.

@@kens97sto171 We have the Tesla Model SR+ and its very close to the price of the Bolt/Leaf+/Kona EV.We live in Canada and only have a $5K Federal EV rebate.We drove to Victoria BC from Calgary AB 660 miles one way and supercharging only cost around $35 CAN.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 4 года назад
@@MHdollrevievs The Tesla is close to the bolt in price if you look at MSRP. However right now most dealers are offering close to $10,000 off on the bolt. That changes things significantly. It's not difficult to find a new bolt at a dealer for $25,000 or less. I agree with you I would never pay MSRP for a Chevrolet bolt given the state of electric vehicles currently. I would probably pick a Kona EV or Soul EV if you could find one.. The Tesla certainly is a decent price if you can actually find one for the mid $30k. That 660 miles would cost me $30 US of Gas in my Prius. If I use my total cost per mile, that's Fuel, all maintenance and tires, it comes to $35 total at our current $1.75/gallon. This is one of the reasons I'm not really ready to switch to electric. The savings are not really that significant, not when you factor in the difference in purchase price of the vehicle. I drive for a living, or was before the pandemic. I was driving 50,000 mi per year, when I ran the numbers between a brand new Prius, versus a brand new model 3 long range. $30k vs $48k. The break-even point was 10 years plus even at 50,000 mi per year. That's not a very good financial choice. Obviously the model 3 and the Prius are not really in the same class of vehicle especially when it comes to performance. However the Prius is actually more practical , which is all that really matter to me plus reliability , and access to service and parts, the Prius is the better choice for my current needs. The Chevrolet bolt is actually more practical for me than a model 3 because of the hatchback. The Kona is really nice inside but actually has a significantly smaller back seat than the bolt making it less useful. At this point I would probably lean towards a used model S. But then you have to factor in maintenance and repairs on a vehicle that will cost a hell of a lot more to maintain and repair than a Toyota.. So nice used Prius is my current choice. 12 years old, 331,000 miles. Still running great

It was just 6 months ago (right after I got the Kona) that I was talking with a Tesla owner who had just been to Yellowstone. He described the circuitous route that he had to take to get there - the Dakotas weren't really possible back then (in any EV). I think he had to head to Denver first and then swing north, and he had to use L2 chargers in some of the towns just to make that work. The improvements in just the past 6 months are amazing.

Exactly why I bought a Tesla, supercharger network makes it effortless - even easier in the UK with less distance between chargers!!

Kyle, I’m pretty sure you did this maybe in another video but I put my Rocketbox on reverse when I drove from NY down to SC and I averaged 292 Wh/mile over around 1900 miles there and back with some driving whilst I was there, also sat better on the car not hanging over the front of the car as much.

OK... I just discovered your channel a couple days ago, but really enjoy it... especially Blue. Plus Alyssa's sarcasm.

Can’t believe I’ve watched so many hours of your road trip.... I just can’t stop. Random observations.....You’re very brave to do this with two dogs and all the camping stuff. Also, think how much easier this would have been in a Y! Especially the off roading parts. I think you did this in June, but I am surprised that there’s almost no mention of how much more complicated this was during the COVID pandemic. Is that why you camped? Lastly......seriously? You keep pushing the range down to the last 1 or 2%. Isn’t Alyssa freaking out? I would be and I’ve had a 3 for 2 years.

It's amazing how you get to the superchargers with under 10% charge. I always leave with it estimating 20% and I get there with 10% (with no roof box!) and driving close to speed limit

Great video, enchanted highway now added to my bucket list. Still hoping my Mach E can do this trip without charging issues.

Thanks for these great travel episodes. In one of the episodes you complained about the jarring effect of engaging autopilot. I wanted to remind you that the speed management of autopilot can be modified in the autopilot settings. There are absolute and relative speed options with offset. When first engaged, autopilot will accelerate to match the posted speed limit plus or minus any offset you have established. If you find that autopilot is accelerating too quickly when it is engaged, try turning down the offset. Safe travels.
