I took my Tesla Model X out in the snow again, but this time shot video of the Model X driving through the snow. I also got a chance to test out opening the falcon wing doors when the car is covered in snow.

On top of getting winter tires I would also suggest putting chains on top of the winter tires as well to give you the best traction possible. Thus decreasing the likelihood of you getting a scratch on your brand new car.

Over the years, i had Blizzak, Michelin varies models, Coper, Yoko, etc Nokian Hakka R, RSi, R2 all best for heavy car. Off the line might not as good as others, lane changes, breaking top notch.
@tarassu
@tarassu 7 лет назад
Nokian Hakka R2 - they have very good rolling resistance and excellent grip. Hakka 8 are one of the quietest studded tires while having good rolling resistance and excellent grip. Not necessary if ice is not everyday problem. XL and SUV versions should be available. (different load index)
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 лет назад
+Arnis Tarassu thanks! Yeah, studded tires aren't necessary in Colorado. We vary rarely get any ice. That's why I've been using all season tires for so long.
@tarassu
@tarassu 7 лет назад
The Nerdy Engineer there is no such thing as all-season tires. they are actually called no-season tires. too soft in summer too hard in winter. bad rolling resistance in summer and not enough of grooves for winter.

Go with the Blizzaks! I swear by them. I have them on all of my cars
@amalgamator2

I have Blizzak thru tirerack on cheap rims. The blizzacks are a little overkill and pretty soft. In Denver, you will be driving on cold, dry pavement a lot. I might consider the OEM Pirellis thru Tirerack on cheap rims. This winter has been so mild I think you would be fine with all weathers, but Pirellis might be night to go fast in the cold

If you go Nokian make sure they're winter tires NOT all weather, The all weather are not nearly as good as full winter although better than all season. Blizzak and Michelin x-ice are both rated #1. I have Blizzaks on my car and Nokian on my wife's car, Blizzak is noticeably better.

I'm sure the cold looses the battery some range but it wouldn't be all down to the cold battery. The millage going down while driving is because of all the rolling resistance the snow gives no? Unless that was just driving in the cold on cleared tarmac roads.

I've used just about every winter tire brand available to me over the years here in Eastern Canada. I've stuck to the Blizzaks simply because, to be honest... they make winter driving as close to summer as possible. That said, based on what I'm hearing about the Nokian's , they are the next choice I will make. It will be at least another winter on these Blizzaks so, we'll see I guess. Im not sure why anyone thinks you can open Falcon Wing doors in the wet weather without getting snow or rain inside the vehicle. I can't open any of my doors without cleaning the top of the car of snow without getting at least some water/snow in the car. This has been the case for any car I've ever owned. I would treat the X just like any car...and clean the stop of it off and carry on. Oh...and once you have winter tires, you will never go back to all season's in the winter again and realize just how much dangor you are putting yourself and other in. You can't go wrong with the Blizzaks. Bjorn loves the Nokians so I'm sure you'd love those too. Now go buy some tires man and let us see your before and after review.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer

+dddire straits thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I've heard that any winter tire is going to be like night and day compared to an all season tires. So I should be happy with anything, but I figure if I'm spending the money, why not try to get the one that comes more recommended. I agree about opening the doors. I brush the snow off of the top of my normal door before opening it to keep the snow from falling inside the car.

These are better than Michelin ice tires? I am very curious an would welcome your opinion. Hope to hear back. I am also considering trading in my truck for this particular vehicle. Tired of paying for gas

In Quebec, where I live, you must have winter tires on your car from December 15th till April 15th. Fines are steep otherwise. Do not open the trunk after opening the Falcon wing doors or your rear seat passengers will get covered in snow. I have Pirelli Scorpion Winter tires (on their own wheels) and they work very well.
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 лет назад
+Allan Kobelansky haha, good tip about the trunk! Cool, I'll check out the Pirelli's too. Thanks!

JayXStar You are correct. Don't tell anyone though. Snow is possible till the beginning of May. Preheating the car for 10 minutes prevents any freezing doors or latches. The charging port can be a project. Freezing rain messes up the perimeter sensors as well. And keep your side mirrors in manual mode.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9s on tesla syclone wheels. Another tesla youtuber called Bjorn Nyland did that with his model x for winter. edit: btw the nokian hakkapeliita 9 is studded
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 6 лет назад
Yeah, those are nice tires. In Colorado, the winters are mild and the snow is dry/powdery so studded tires aren't really necessary. Nokian seem to be the most recommended brand though.

@unlogical2188 6 лет назад
The Nokian wrg3 is studless and an all weather tire, so it should be okay for the light snow, and summer conditions :) Notice: it is only available the 19 inch Tesla wheels or, with the tire size of 265/55R19

You always have to clean the vehicle from all snow an ice before entry any road for safety of all other road users and also is the big penalty in many countries driving with that...

+Travel Shows that's a very good point. I normally park in the garage so I forgot about that. I guess the scenario for this would be, if you wanted to open the door so your kids could get inside while you scraped the snow off the car, then you could just scrape a little off before opening the door for them.

I know I’m late on this but I love the nokian wrg3 tires on both of my Subaru’s. I use them as year round tires but even still, I have better road feedback and traction than the blizzaks I had. If you want exclusive winter tires, I’d say the hakkapillettas* (hope I spelled it right) from Nokian on a separate set of wheels. Just to make life easy. Good luck and let me know what you do. I’m getting a model S in June hopefully
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 лет назад
+greg fabre thanks for the suggestions! The Nokian hakkapillettas seem to be a popular choice. Unfortunately, I moved down south where it doesn't snow so I'm sticking with all-season tires for now. Once those wear out, I'm probably going to get some summer tires since they work year round down here.

Mine was crap in snow. Traded it in got a real vehicle. Falcon doors would only open with light snow that yes falls in. Heavy snow wouldn't open like a safety issue thinking there is a person near to hit. Good but bad. Cold weather doesn't like batteries and computers also. Screen blank and had to go back to dealer. It was so cold when the car was warm the screen cracked! Like hot/cold. I was pissed. West coast better cold I would avoid that's my opinion
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 6 лет назад
+Jim Cole I'm sorry to hear that. There are a ton of Tesla owners in cold climates that absolutely love them. Where do you live that you had such issues? I agree that if you get wet/heavy snow, then you can have issues opening the falcon wing doors. However, why wouldn't you brush the snow off of the top of the falcon wing doors before trying to open them? Did you leave your car unplugged for long periods of time in the cold? The reason I'm asking is because the car will heat the battery pack to keep it from getting too cold. But if your battery is too low then it won't do it. So it's important to plug your car in as much as possible in extremely cold weather if it's going to be sitting for an extended period of time.

With ANY car, "The almighty Tesla", or not, snow is going to fall into the Carle. Thats just a matter of physics. Just park in a garage or have a good old fashioned snow brush and clean the car off like people have been doing since the beginning of time.

Considering how LONG you have to wait for Tesla to fix ANY kind of damage to your car (2-3 months in most cases!) you reaaaly don't want to have any kind of accident in it. GET winter tires ASAP. (For horror stories see: teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/the-sad-part-of-owning-a-tesla-accidents.49650/ ).

Do the falcon wing doors get stuck when icy
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 6 лет назад
+TreeTG good question. I haven't noticed an issue, but Colorado doesn't get much ice like other areas. It's more likely that slush will stick to the side of the doors and the sensors will think there is an obstacle right next to the door so it won't want to open. If that happens, you can hold the open button inside the car to override it, and the door will open slowly. I imagine that even if the doors are iced over, the powerful hydraulics in the falcon wing doors should be able to break through the ice.

Why is there so much range loss overnight? Does it heat the battery?
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 7 лет назад
+James Wood yes, Teslas heat (and cool) the battery to keep it within an ideal temperature range to help minimize battery degradation. Tesla does such a good job at it, that older Model Ss with 250k miles on them still get over 90% of their original range.
@JamesWoodTN
@JamesWoodTN 7 лет назад
Interesting, so I guess there is a min and max temp which engages the heat/cool, like the normal operating pressure of a sub's reactor and the pressurizer heater. Is there an indicator anywhere on that screen or dash for battery temp?
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer

@@BrettTheNerdyEngineer Oh okay. I live in Canada near the rockies in Alberta. Debating on getting a Tesla. Does the cab heat up good and do the windows not fog up?
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer
@BrettTheNerdyEngineer 5 лет назад
Oh, nice! Yes, Teslas warm up extremely quickly; much faster than gasoline cars. Gasoline cars mostly use waste heat from the engine to heat up the interior of the car. Since Teslas don't have engines, they have an actual heater in them. Also, you can easily preheat the car from your phone app for those times that it's really cold out. Teslas are awesome cars for winter. The only downside is when it's really cold and snowy, you lose a lot of range (30% or more). But that usually isn't an issue because Teslas have so much range to begin with. You plug in every night so you start every day with a full charge. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm happy to help!
