I'm testing living out of a Tesla in cold weather. The new Model Y did well but drained a lot of the battery overnight. Mt Rushmore was also a great place to visit with free Tesla chargers.
Wow, this exactly the video I was looking for. I'm putting in an order for the Model Y in the next day or two, and plan to use it to camp out and was wondering how far down in temps someone has taken it. -15F incredible! Looking forward to your future videos.
Window coverings! :) If you want to truly to USE camp mode regularly, there are thermal window coverings you can get that you put up inside before going to sleep. It will probably more than halve the energy consumption.
@@DanielZajic This guy used some he had gotten for his model 3 so not perfect fit, but they helped. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EiHtPpq8PL0.html I actually had a hard time finding cheep ones for model Y.. here are some high quality ones.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eqaJUBgfq3A.html DreamCase for model Y
Yes, 12V electric blanket, window coverings as others mentioned. I hope this is the long range Dual motor Tesla, The bigger battery, all wheel drive are essential, so are winter tiers, shovel, other gear. Lots of campsites with AC power. An extension cord is all that's needed.
Pretty cool Brian! What inside temperature does it maintain in camp mode and can you adjust it? For better efficiency I’d recommend a down mummy bag and if there’s wall outlets in the car stuff a small blanket heater in your bag- then drop the car temp to 40 degrees or lower if you can. I bet you’d save a ton of battery! Still impressive it can do this in that cold of weather. I’m converting an old diesel sprinter van to a camper in Phoenix in my free time. I don’t mean to rub it in, but It’s amazing how much energy you get out of one gallon of diesel, it can basically heat the van at freezing temp for an entire day on a single gallon 😜. If you’re going through Phoenix hit me up! Or Boise- I am traveling there for work frequently this year and going to be moving there around October this year. Would be good to see you! Cheers man -Jack Lorch
Thanks Jack! There’s a “low” temp setting in camp mode. Otherwise, the lowest is 60 and I’m leaning towards a warmer sleeping bag/heated blanket. Sounds like a cool project and hopefully we cross paths!
@@BrianKehm I also agree with some of the other comments about window insulation - you might be able to find a good deal on Etsy for this kind of stuff, and I would shoot for a magnetic style if it works. It’s really common for van lifers, and I bet it would make a big difference with so much window area in that car. Maybe you can also find an engineer who has done a heat load calculation on that Tesla! If you get into the dirty details about this stuff I bet it would be super popular
A 12 volt heating pad or blanket is nice to use here, then you can keep the interior temp a bit lower. I also think that camp mode won’t work work when battery is less than 20%.
@@BrianKehm Do you have a twitter or anything? I'd love to buy you coffee and talk adventures. I've car camped/traveled from New York, to LA to Portland, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Moab, and a lot of cool places in the SE. Meet you halfway! :) Cheers.
@@DblOSmith great adventure and stories to share! All my social accounts are my name, @BrianKehm (for twitter). Hopefully we’ll cross paths down the road.
It was freezing here in Central Thailand all weekend. Mine will be delivered in March. I can’t wait to try out camp mode when it dips down to 21°c next winter. (By March it will be hot again here ) :-)
Thanks Brian! I really enjoyed the scenes, AND i really needed that info about cold weather battery performance. I wasn’t expecting a 50% battery loss. Quick question, what interior temp setting did you have it set to all night? (I’m wondering how much interior temp adjustment might help vs plugging in a blanket?
I set it at 60 F for the entire time. It incremented by one degree until 60. The next lowest was a “low” setting. But when I turned it down to “low” the fans were a lot louder. I wish I could have set it lower to save more energy.
Nice video, great sound and visuals quality, that battery went down quite a bit. Good to know. It dropped much more than I expected also. Was wondering if you were powering other items in the 12 volt while you slept? If you did leave it the whole night for the most then that would be interesting was wondering if any other factors were at play.
Thanks! I might have charged my phone a bit from the front console. But otherwise, didn’t charge anything else. The difference in outdoor temp and indoor has a nonlinear impact on battery usage.
I'm ashamed to say I haven't thought about Mt Rushmore since... middle school? National Treasure? Idk. But I will definitely add it to my travel list now.
Greetings from Ireland. Great video. Did you find out why the battery drained so much? Seemed pretty excessive even though it was so cold outside. Seen many videos where people say the battery typically drains 1% per hour in camp mode. One video in particular, the guy used camp mode at 16 F outside and he had the car set to 70F inside and it only drained 14% in 8 hours
Hey! I lived in Ireland for a few months 🙂 I’m guessing the energy loss is exponential the colder it gets. It held around -15 F for a few hours. I also had camp mode running for over 12 hours. I hope to do some more testing soon.
On average your battery dropped 4.5% every hour in camp mode. For it being -10 to -15 degrees the entire night thats really not bad. Thanks for the video :)
And considering how much glass, since he didn’t use any thermal window coverings. Heck. The car ‘starting up’ in -15f is quite incredible. My ICE van battery can be hit or miss on wanting to turn over and the engine screams at me.
Great video. If my mental math was right, that's about 3.3kwh/hr - equivalent to running two space heaters at full power. Not bad considering the temps and that it was undoubtedly keeping the battery warm too.
Hi Brian. Hope all is well. A small portable heater would work really well specially if you have window shades. They consume much less power than the car. Also, would you please let me know if it is true that while in camp mode your car can not be locked? Thank you. ❤
Thanks! I’ve considered a small heater a few times, along with a portable battery pack. If the car is off, the outlets won’t work. I’m also not sure on locking in camp mode. I haven’t used camp mode in a long time. But if I do again, I’ll test the lock and let you know
Yep, I’m thinking about a little portable battery pack. I’m headed to Yellowstone in a few days and it’s going to be cold. Depending on how that goes, I might pick one up.
great video. some questions: you jumped in the back but how did u close the trunk? manually from inside? when inside on the back can u customize settings, close the doors, turn on music etc. all via your app? thanks a lot and greets from germany
I'm curious how the Continental stock tires do in snow? Seems like they're pretty good. I live in deep S. Texas, so snow isn't a problem, but I'm curious how my Model Y would do if I ever encounter it on a trip.
Nice video! I’m wondering of there is more space in the model y than the model 3, i’m 5ft11 and the model 3 is just a few inches too short for me to comfortably sleep. How tall are you and did your feet get cold at all? I would think the warm air circulates better to the back of the car with the model y being more open?
Thanks 😊 the chargers in the Mt Rushmore parking lot are free slow chargers. Although, it cost $10 to park at Mt Rushmore. However, if you keep the receipt, it’s good for a year. So that works well with this area being my home base.
@@BrianKehm Thanks for the quick reply. What a great deal. I brought my family to Mt. Rushmore just a few years ago. What a beautiful place. Keep up the great videos!
It was around 78-79%. I was surprised it dropped so much. Although, I had camp mode running for 12+ hours and outside temp held around -15 F for a few hours.
Yeah, that's about 3kW power draw? Not surprising given all the glass. Looking forward to when you get window covers, I think I'll get some even just to camp on my own land until I build my off-grid cabin.
The Tesla site showed what configurations qualified when I placed the order. I hope to do a video with total costs once I’ve registered and paid final taxes.
Love the video. Is your Model Y standard or long range? and from what % did you start camp mode? I know it ended up at 25% but was not sure it was from 80%-25%.
-15 c is 5 degrees f. Physics cannot be ignored no matter what. Once you get below zero the Tesla will lose at least 50 percent of its range as it has to use a large percent of its own power to keep the battery warm. Lithium does not like "really" cold weather. Lithium cars will NEVER be utilitarian is extreme cold.
