I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to find a REAL review of this vehicle. I’ve lost track of how many garbage videos I’ve sifted through while the owner talks about “the amazing interior” followed by 10 minutes of road noise 🙄 and nothing else. Absolute trash. This solidified my decision to get the Y. Much appreciated!

I have had a model 3 for almost three years and have just ordered the Y. I cannot find words to describe just how fantastic Teslas are, and have to say that I think they look absolutely amazing. One is normally excited about a new car for the first week or three, then the excitement wears off. Three years down the line I am just excited about my Tesla as I was on day one.

Thank you for this review! I have had my Y since early March, the sum of its parts makes for a wonderful family car in so many ways. It's my first EV and driving the Y is effortless, the torque and handling is superb, 'one' peddle driving, sound system, the view out. For suspension, I have 19" wheels with pressures set to 40psi, that seems to be the comfort setting. Don't worry too much about the speedo to the left of sight, (or right if in EU etc) it isn't an issue. Set the seat/steering to your profile, partner to theirs, set once, tweak and forget. I have some issues with Spotify not linking, mobile chap will pop out to fix. Don't worry about being labeled a Tesla fan boy, I'm not, it was just, for me, the best car to suit our needs and an easy purchase with respect to lead times. The car is great, in fact it's a joy, it makes you feel good, it makes you look forward to the drive, I am also a 'cool' dad in my children's school!

What an absolutely excellent 'programme', not just a car review, but enjoyable, thoughtful viewing. And the production level was right up there with TV channels. As an overview of Tesla ownership, it seemed spot on (I don't own one nor any EV), pinpointing the essence of the appeal, their unique app to charging ecosystem, even down to in-car entertainment designed to wile away charging times. Other EV cars look better, better built, much cheaper, but only Tesla is the complete package. This is peak (so far...) LBS car video, cue applause...

I have a MY on order, coming in May. I went for the Y because when you spec up the EV6, ioniq, id4 etc to a similar level to the MY they’re not that much cheaper. Plus you can get a MY with an 8 week delivery time. All the others are close to a year! Then when you take into account the charging network and the larger boot it becomes a no brainier. Tesla are constantly updating the software so the car and infotainment will get better and be kept up to date. I have a 10 year old bmw and it feels so dated now as the idrive system hasn’t been updated. I also have to agree the styling is pretty awful. It was styled in a wind tunnel to give maximum range.

From what I have seen EV6 has worse aerodynamics and battery disappears in Your eyes going over 130km/h. Hyundai Ionic had some coldgate issues and also heating couldn't work while DC charging in winter. Mustang Mach-e in lane assist mode denies to take any turns on highways. Mercedes'es EV have one of highest kwh consumption of them all. Older EVs don't have heat pump, most don't offer front trunk. Tesla does everything right, it ticks all boxes.

Really nice to see a well balanced review having recently watched Jack's 'camping' trip on Fully Charged. I tested a Y when they first came out and was pretty blown away with the whole package if I'm honest. Prior to that, my only other ev experience came in the form of a BMW i3S which I also thought was brilliant. Realistically not looking to buy for 2 or 3 years yet but I love the tech in EVs even though I've always been a petrol head at heart. Hoping that during this time the coding that surfaced a while back regarding air susp becomes a reality along with head up display. Looks are so subjective but I actually like how they look so clean and unfussy. They're clearly form following function and time and time again they smash the efficiency tests on all the reputable channels. Y for me all day long please 👍

@johnmckay1423
@johnmckay1423 2 года назад
Agree with pretty much everything in the video. I've had a Model 3 for two years and have ordered another one (replacement, not additional!). The Y was £50/month more on the company car lease scheme and while I would've liked the convenience of the hatchback, it's not an issue often enough to justify £600 per year. The boot's pretty big: luggage for four adults going on holiday is fine and I chucked a bale of hay in this morning. It's just a slightly awkward opening. Most reviews say that the suspension in the Y is noticeably harder and more jiggly - presumably to cope with extra height, so I think the 3 will be better most of the time anyway. Things I don't like: the indicator stalk is rubbish - very unpredictable about when it cancels. The satnav is miles worse than Waze or Google maps. No option for "3D view" so where there are multiple exits or lanes splitting it's much more difficult to work out which one to take. It's also less accurate because it doesn't update often enough. There was a 15 mile 2x4 lane dual carriageway built near me and it took 2 years to be included in navigation instructions (made worse because it showed on the screen so the instructions didn't match the map). I went adrift in Leeds yesterday and I'm sure it's due to a road layout change that's not yet in the nav system (very clear instructions to be in the RH lane of two, but didn't go where the satnav expected). Obviously this would be an issue with almost any other car manufacturer as well, but Tesla gets software updates so it feels like a let down. Final one is the auto wipers. They don't turn on when they should and go into monsoon mode when you use the screen wash. It uses the cameras instead of a separate system like every other manufacturer. It's therefore even worse in the dark when there aren't many objects for it to judge against. So after that, why did I order another? Mostly the charging network. Two years ago it was a really easy decision. Now there's a choice of decent cars which is great, but I think Tesla still just about make the best EV - no one is matching their efficiency and the engineering seems less compromised. And again, the charging. I hope I choose something different in 3 years, but Tesla isn't standing still (the current Model 3 is measurably better than mine in ways that you'll notice) and there's a long way for everyone else to go on charging networks.

I got my Y on 1st March after cancelling a Model 3 I’d had on order for 18 months (as I’d got a big dog) and after trying the Kia 6 and the Ioniq 5. I don’t mind the Y’s ride having had a 111R Elise for 10 years (daily driven) and a Jag estate with low profile tyres for 12 which were both harsher rides (having 19” wheels may help). I don’t mind the lack of HUD too, or having to search online to find out how to personalise settings or icons on the touchscreen occasionally. I’m yet to supercharge it having installed a home charger in time, and have since added solar panels so now looking forward to sunny enough days to run the Y solely on sunshine. The efficiency of Teslas and their charging network are big factors, but the quality of the tech and simplicity of the design, which I don’t find ugly, and the effortless speed and acceleration combine to make the Y the only satisfactory choice of EV at the price.

That said, the Y does have more space in the back- cubbies on either side of the hatch floor in particular are MASSIVE. I agree the Y is very unattractive, the rear seat rattle seems endemic (no such issue on our folding seat 3), and the rearward visibility is somehow even worse than the 3. I just heard you comment on the thin air vent. Hate it. Too often the fan for a/c has to run at speed #6 and it’s just too loud. Like the hvac buttons, range of 300 miles in rwd long range spec, insane charging speeds for road tripping, comfortable suspension and seats also for road tripping. Jonny as a recommendation to you ; if you could please start doing acceleration tests from 50 mph-80 mph it would be greatly appreciated. Funny thing is, I find the looks of most Teslas ever so slightly repulsive. However, in the same measure, I find them wonderfully sublime. I’ve never heard what the inspiration for the design stemmed from, but I’d like to believe it involved a great deal of understatement. Because once inside, you can’t help but to become captivated. The tech, layout, and yet again the understated total of it all. Yes’m my pick out of the group you mentioned would definitely be Tesla, especially the “Y”.

Before we went with the model Y long range a year ago we tried many different EV competitors . In the end we went with what was practical. Some others I liked the looks of but were quirky . And the supercharger network was a big plus. Most of the time we charge at home. Here in my state the petrol is at $5.00 per gallon. So my Range Rover is at $80.00 to top off. The Tesla at home is $4.27 to top off. The price at the supercharger is $7 to$9 per full charge. It's a no brainer. Wife loves the Tesla and I have become to love it from an engineering point of view. At one point we had our eye on the Model S. A friend had purchased the S and so the wife and I went out for a drive. It is insane. I have owned over the years many fast European cars. The Y fits in well between too fast and fast enough. @@CrankCyclingChannel I'm in my 3rd EV now, all have had a "firm" ride, particularly uncomfortable at times for the passenger. The bigger the battery, the heavier the car, the harder the suspension to support that weight. The Y has a bigger battery and being taller than the 3 has more weight and body roll to supress, so harder suspension necessary which compromises the ride quality. If/when adjustable air suspension is an option the Y would be far better.

As a long time EV owner (non Tesla), I have to say Tesla for the supercharger network and the integrated tech. I frequently find myself fighting for charge points when I'm doing long distance; on several occasions a quick 30 minute charge has taken upwards of an hour and a half by the time I've driven through two towns to find a charger that isn't in use or isn't faulty. But it kills me that such a forward thinking brand like Tesla is so conservative with its exterior styling. It’s really hard to get excited about a blob fish.

And liquefying it just isn't an option, rockets only get away with it because they tank it and use it within the hour, mostly. Tesla batteries have shown very good capacity retention, thanks to actually doing it right and having active temperature management of the batteries. Now, a Nissan Leaf... Yeah, those lost a lot in very little time. But that's one make and model of, by now, many. Also, the longer ranges of today's EVs means that even at 20% loss of capacity, generally considered EoL for batteries, they're actually still at around 250 miles. I appreciate the tesla tech and the fact they have kicked the automotive industry up the backside. I don’t like the Apple-esqe control they have over your own property such as essentially renting the optional extras to the individual rather than attaching them to the car itself (something that all the manufacturers will no doubt copy as we move to a subscription world). Also any car that had been in a crash (salvage) they disable supercharging unless it’s fixed by them - which essentially renders a salvaged car worthless without supercharging - which will impact insurance costs I suspect

@baronvonlimbourgh1716 2 года назад
@@eliotmansfield sure, they where first and made the most of it. And in the process shifted the entire car industry along with them. But they also had to do that to even make their company viable. Who would have bought a tesla if it couldn't be charged anywhere? It always had to be part of the strategy no matter who was the one to pull the cart. The legacy companies not willing to commit to such an investment is why it didn't happen 20 years earlier. But in the end every brand having their own chargers is just a silly proposition so they could never hold on to that advantage for long and the rest of the industry would eventually catch up. And with them actually being car manufacturers first and having many more years experience they are making moves quickly. An ev isn't much different from an ice car in the end. If tesla had started making ice cars nobody would have cared about it. They basicly had a 15 year monopoly on ev's because of that investment but that is ending now. Now tesla will have to actually start competing with the rest of the industry and in my opinion the competition is looking increasingly attractive. I'm sure their product will keep finding an audience though. I don't really see them going anywhere soon. An additional niche brand in the space is very welcome imho. We lost a lot of manufacturers over the last decades sadly enough. I'm just not sure how they will position themselves in the market going forward. Behind the hype and the gadgets there really isn't anything that justifies their premium pricing and they simply are in no way large enough to survive on commodity margins.

It was surprising to see that it didn't cost a whole lot more than the others with pricing that locks in for delivery around Oct-Jan. The tech and future OTA upgrades are untouchable. Plus, the Supercharger network, the batteries and battery management system looks to be best by far, it can tow a trailer with ease, and believe it should the best to own for a long time. We usually keep our cars 15 - 25 years. Like most of the car, Tesla's body panels are aluminum alloy and shouldn't rust. BTW, my 2007 Chrysler 300C SRT Design Group performance suspension is firm. Went to another BP charger 5 mins away, also occupied. Went on to a set of 3 * new* chargers in a retail park 20 miles up the road (now down to under 10 miles range). First didn't work for contactless despite a message "card payment accepted". Nor did the second. Tried signing up to the app for the 2nd charger and the app errored. Tried a few more times and eventually it worked. Grrr

This will not get any better with more people buying EV's (The charging network is next to non-existant in terms of increasing EV use).

Excellent point RE the heads up display, the need for just a few more tactile buttons/knobs, and the subjective outside design opinion. I've struggled with the same feelings myself.

My favourites: 1. Kia EV6 (800V and V2L) 2. Mustang Mach-e (best looks) 3. Tesla Model Y (supercharger network, big frunk, but most expensive)

Great review. Once again Johnny managed to get things entertaining, factual, funny and’ real’. I really dislike the look of Tesla’s, but the tech and charging are absolutely superb. Got to give it to them. I’d still take a n EV6 though, out of that segment 😁

I used to think they looked weird but I have fallen in love with how the y looks I will buy a y performance when there is air-conditioned seats and the new 4680 cells (probably next year). the tech, performance and practicality you get with the y is unmatched and its not even close. even before you bring up the supercharger network.

When I demonstrate the "emissions" feature of my Tesla at a car show, I point out that it was someone's JOB to program that. Imagine it - you're sitting in a cubicle and your boss says "make the emissions feature". What do you tell your friends at the local pub you're working on now? I can also imagine that either the most hated programmer got the job, OR they had to make a lottery for all the people that wanted to do that one instead of the regular old programming tasks.

Love the review Johnny! I'm picking up my first Tesla on Monday, black in/out Model Y Performance. Never been a Tesla fan boy, nor hater. Currently driving ID.3 and Enyaq 80x, but Tesla just got it right, I'm somewhat annoyed with al small software bugs in both ID.3 and Enyaq, VW have just completely messed up with software. ID.3 feels just too cheep for the price we pay here in Sweden, base model with 58kWh battery starts at 45k euros, Skoda on the other hand have raised prices like 3 times since we got our in late October 2021, so 80x Sportline with some extra stuff like airbags in the back is almost 70k euros today. That is just insane amount of money for a Skoda, yes it's a good looking car, good looking interior, but software is just awful and Skoda is not doing anything to improve it for current costumers, we have been promised new software update, but nothing yet and the car has been on the marked for over a year now, it's just embarrassing. Consumption is not that great either, especially during winter months, Tesla is far more efficient. Than small rattles here and there in a brand new car is just embarrassing as well, back passenger side door and even driver door, it's just not ok for that kind of money. Model Y is absolutely not a great looking car, I personally don't hate the looks as much as Jonny, but don't love it either, just think that what it offers in terms of technology, performance, space, efficiency, there is nothing to compare it to. Yes there are cheaper cars on the market, but if you would get the same amount of stuff in ID.4 or Enyaq for instance price difference would not be that huge at all, if any.

Good review Jonny. Whereas most brands are making EVs because they've been told to, at least Tesla believe in the ethos of electrification and have thought the whole process through. Would have to be a model 3. or possibly the lower powered BMW i4. as not an suv fan.

I would get a Model Y. The supercharger network is great advantage . And the other thing is that the other makers really don’t want to make electric cars. Even if they now make great electric cars.

3:20 Also brilliant thing about the process of plotting a course on EVs is that some cars will pre-heat the battery for the charge to optimize it for the charge. Coldgating is a terrible curse up here in the Nordics. Just noticed Nissan is putting a MANUAL pre-heating button on its new EV, which is so cool compared to just completely forgetting people in cold climates or forcing people to use (those who know about it) pre-heating via plotting a course. Another issue is that not all cars have all third-party chargers on their on-board computer...

Do they make any EVs that don't have a computer? They never seem to work properly for me so I'd sooner drive a car that doesn't need a computer

@@Markcain268 Don't know of any that don't, even the 2013 Nissan Leaf had one. But from reviews, the general consensus seems to be that only Tesla has one that actually works well, mostly due to having control of their own charger infrastructure. The rest have many issues with chargers being in use/broken/having no info on charging speed/routing stupid by having you charge at an AC charger for 8 hr in the middle of a road trip, when a DC charger with 30 minutes is 5 miles away. Essentially, at least for a while, the computers were there, but their usefulness was lacking, with people resorting to third party smartphone apps and web services for better routing. Don't know, if the newer EV platforms from legacy manufacturers have actually solved that. Then again, my country doesn't have any Superchargers...

I’ve got the Y. Had it nearly a year. Driven it in Europe. Really like the enhanced driver tech - in London City traffic and on motorways. Great sound system & now Apple Music. Also like the simplicity of its external design. ❤
