Tesla Model Y suspension and handling review. Firm, but comfortable. And fun too...

Welcome to Just Get a Tesla, where I do a series of tests and challenges to help show people that instead of shopping around for EVs they should just get a Tesla...
In this episode I explore what the Model Y LR is like for comfort. What is the suspension like to live with? Is it a harsh ride? Does it handle well? And what happens when you floor the throttle?
I take my Tesla on a series of ride and handling tests. First a fast country road to test general ride comfort. Then into town to see how it handles broken tarmac and sunken grids. Finally a B-road thrash and a 0-60 launch.

Hi. Just enjoyed the video trip - very interesting and entertaining with wonderful scenery too. You have really got to grips with the handling around the narrow roads and lanes - great camera work!! Thanks again for sharing. Regards RickLG

I have a Y LR with the 19" wheels and have the same analysis that you had regarding the wheel size. I now have about 33K miles or over 51K KM on it and it has been flawless. The suspension is taut, and I wish they offered an air suspension to soften in a bit but it's not punishing, just a bit firm. Anyway, I enjoyed your review and feel the same way about my Model Y as you do.

nice video. I also got an MYLR on 1st of March, and I am feeling quiet a bumpy ride. I believe UK still has the old stock, heard that they are built in Giga Shanghai in December. So I don't believe we have comfort suspension yet.

Hi Ian. You must have much softer suspension than I do. My chinese MY 2wd is as harsh as a pint of bitter. I was thinking of getting the softer suspension, but decided against it as I'll be changing the Y for a Model Q/2 when that arrives (assuming the range is decent). I will give the sport steering mode a go though... Regards, Greg.

I think suspension is pretty subjective. From for you may not be for me

Very interesting video. I have a Kona EV, suspension is fine. Test drove a Model Y six months ago , love the car hated the crashy ride. Waiting for us in the UK to get the 'softer' suspension though no one can tell me if and when. Then I'll put my order in. I'm in my 60's now so comfort trumps handling.

Thanks for video. I like all the scene and terrains in the video. Nice to see the ride passing through all of them. Btw, for my personal preference, Y has the stiff suspension, comparing to other similar size of crossover with the similar price tag. New drivers need time to get used to it.

When I bought my mod y I sold a 2018 sportage gtline s also on 19 alloys the ride was a lot harsher and handling no comparison great video chris

Exactly - so many cars have harsh ride with rubber band tyres that have no sidewall to give. This car is much better riding than others I have owned / ridden in. It's not perfect, but it's decent

great video mate! I have th exact same model as yours , I noticed that you have proximity warning on your infotainment screen... something here in Israel we do not have. Ion fact , we have no warning of proximity alerts what so ever... did you recently get that option in ur car or u had it from day one ? mine is model 2023 without sensors.

Yes. But you need to get into the service menu which is made for dealers. You can find videos on RU-vid showing how to do this.

With a larger diameter tire that has a shorter sidewall thus less rubber to flex gives a stiffer ride.

great video as ever - I am planning test drive model y in march. I am also considering model x - but that may be too much £ - however, it has air suspension. I wonder if air suspension for the Y has ever been mooted or requested? Anyone have thoughts on ride comfort X v Y?
@justgetatesla
@justgetatesla Год назад
I haven't driven an X, but much bigger car so even with air suspension won't handle as well as a Y. Which in turn doesn't handle as well as a 3

Tried a MY rwd and a M3 rwd, and thought they were both fun to drive but preferred the ride, handling and slightly narrower width of the latter and, as we don't need the space of the Y, we're getting a 3. No USS, but prefer the £5500 price drop. Impressive judgement and skill on those roads.
@justgetatesla
@justgetatesla Год назад
3 handles better than Y, that's absolutely true
@yurikislytsia8596
@yurikislytsia8596 Год назад
Suspension is the most important consideration point when buying Tesla MY 'SUV'. I have M3 and it has stiff suspension and you will be punished by horrible south east roads. Test drove MY and must say it is too hard after new Honda CRV. Tesla has to somehow soften the suspension up a little at least on non-performance models. SUV has to be forgiving to the road surface. There is not much clearance on MY. Given the battery is underneath and vulnerable to damage, speed humps cannot be ignored as on ICE SUVs. P.S. Dont even think about 20 inch wheels. Go for a softer 19 inch. I personally will wait until suspension improves on this otherwise excellent performance EV SUV.
@justgetatesla
@justgetatesla Год назад
It's a balance! Having now done 10k miles I don't find the suspension to be too hard. Yes it is stiff, but that allows it to be hustled. Softer suspension = less hustle. Like when I went from a BMW E91 3-series to an F10 5-series. Softer suspension made it a barge rather than the ultimate driving machine

Fanboi? I describe the ride on various other vehicles I have owned - from very firm to very soft. I'm not saying the Model Y is a magic carpet ride. But it isn't brittle and harsh either.

@bradytorvik6294

@@justgetatesla You perfectly described it. The model y ride is not a soft or floaty ride, but the complaints about the suspension are really overblown. I go over the same stretch of roads with different cars all the time and it's the sound the Y makes going over bumps that's really different rather than how it feels. I also test drove a lot of EVs and for me the Y is just a lot more fun to drive. The other EVs were great cars too and I'm sure a better fit for lots of people -- but if you're looking for an exciting car to drive the Y is definitely worth a shot.
