Thanks for a wonderful in depth review. It’s so hard to find both a tester that knows what they’re talking about and is also impartial when it comes to Teslas as most reviewers in the US are owners of the vehicle themselves, and so have a unrealized bias towards confirming their purchasing decision.

Tesla needs to bring out LR RWD. They are perfect for Australia. We don't need LR AWD for crazy 0-100kmh speeds, we need to be able to drive 700km without charging.

Still the best reviewer on the internet. Always appreciate your honesty. I do love the Model Y but been waiting to see how they improve the suspension until buying one for the family. We rented one in Queensland for a week last year. Yes, the app is utterly brilliant. The overall vehicle technology and infrastructure felt 5 years ahead of most cars on the road.

So glad to see the blue.. All I have seen so far are white Teslas in Vic... This is my colour of choice and I think the Model Y is the car I'll get in a couple years when hopefully I am comfy with the charging infrastructure for country wide travel. I think the Model X just isn't worth the massive cost over this, and the only thing I would change is to add one of the MANY available HUD options that slit and go up and down with the wheel. I know I'll get used to the middle screen but I don't WANT to, and the HUDS look fantastic and are cheap (relatively speaking). Blue with the light interior. Sold! I hope by then though that Tesla considers adding adaptive dampers, and also I wonder if the Aussie cars will lose Ultrasonic sensors.. I need to see Tesla's camera updates in action before I am convinced.

Model Y is the best daily driver all-rounder imo. Not the most exciting or sexy.. but you can roadtrip, carry a full car, tow small stuff on the odd occasion, load the boot and drop the seats for big things from bunnings.. and daily drive it.

@@hobo1704 every day i can start with 300km+ range as it charges overnight.If i want to charge i get 77km an hour at home. Roadtrip recharging with DC is a 15min stop every 2.5 to 3 hours which id be having a break for anyway. Toilet, lunch, coffee.. whatever. Full charge is ~500km which id rarely do in a day. Its faster than my older ice car, lane keep assist is great. Model Y has a tonne of storage and amazing price when it comes to value, its cheaper than a corolla currently to buy and operate thanks to current incentives and solar/electricity pricing compared to fuel and servicing. EVs arent for everyone, i still love my petrol power vehicles. But for a daily, its hard to beat (imo)

As you said how on earth does Tesla sell these to customers when they know they're so bad? Shows they don't really give a stuff about their customers as they know they're not getting the things they're being charged for and with these things being over 6 figures drive away that's a disgrace. Cars a third of the price have those systems and they work a hell of a lot better than on this thing.. Good on you for calling all the shortcomings out mate.. Cheers..

Took possession of my MYP 2024 last week and the seat belt rattle issue was the first thing I noticed after driving away from the Tesla dealer. What's funny is that I did the same thing he did ... I engaged the passenger side seat belt. I eventually took care of the rattle issue by buying some rubber covers for the seat belt housing sold on amazon. Rattle gone. Love my MYP otherwise. I've been waiting on this vehicle for some time, and thought that once the lease on our current vehicle expired it would be at the top of our list of replacements. Now I'm not so sure given you highlighted some quite significant flaws, not the least of which is the (poor) suspension. The good news is that Tesla has a policy of improving its cars over time, so 2 years from now, the issue might well be gone. Incidentally, the days of Telsa's poor quality are *not* over: my daughter received her M3 earlier this year with stone chips in the bonnet and it took 2 weeks for Tesla to fix it. They gave her a loan-car, but the issue shouldn't have been there in the first place.

I have the Mountain pass performance coil overs in my Model Y Performance and it handles very nicely. My stock Model Y Performance is more top heavy and has more roll in turns. I am considering changing to coil overs in the Y down the road. The Tesla is still a very nice car for everyday driving. The long range Model Y is comfortable but I wanted the extra speed from the performance. My BMW M3 with Dinan tuned suspension will out handle the Model 3 Performance in turns. You cannot go wrong with the Tesla it will outperform many other cars in this same price range.

Just to correct you, the rear brakes on your performance Y is still the Brembo and NOT covers over Mando brakes you see on the US made MYPs. You can identify it by noticing the 2 dimples on this MYP rear brakes whereas the new fake brake covers are a smooth piece (can see difference if you Google the pics). MIC MYPs as still being made with Brembo rears, my RHD MYP was built Jan 2023 from Giga Shanghai and still has Brembo rears. I believe the change to the rear covers is ONLY on US made MYPs.

@@CarExpertAus Since about 90% of the stopping power is from the front brakes, the downgrade to the rears would have minimal impact. But I do prefer that our MYPs have the matching Brembos at the rear instead of some fake covers 🙂 Also I do find the brakes much more progressive than my Golf R, you really have to mash the MYP brakes hard but when you do, they do provide good stopping power.

We had a look at a Model 3 & a standard Model Y yesterday. Initially, I thought the 3 would have been my choice, but because the seats in the Y sit up on a raised platform, getting in and out of the seat is so much easier, for an old guy. It was absolutely amazing! The 3 was hard to get in and out of. The biggest dissapointment however, was no spare tyre. The salesman said there was 4 years of road service, but frankly, if you have a flat, that can't be repaired with a tube of goo, you could be stranded for a long time! He countered with "For $300 you can buy a spare wheel". Yeah, but where do you store it! We declined the offer of a test drive, because we knew that the wow factor could have us buying it, against our better judgement. Seriously, no spare wheel was the breaking point. We have family in rural NSW & Victoria and buying anything without a proper spare could be a recipe for disaster

I now have three Tesla’s. I have two Model Y’s and one Model 3. Overall the buying experience was excellent. There was no need to haggle over prices and delivery was exceptionally easy. However, there are some draw backs. Currently we have significant negative equity in each of our three cars due to the continuous price drops after purchasing them. In one case I took delivery days after a reduction and attempted to reason with Tesla but they would not provide any kind of consideration. The cars ride very nicely and are very comfortable inside. However, the claim that you will get nearly 300 miles per charge is completely erroneous. You may extend your range if you are constantly on the highway but you are actually getting about 100-150 miles per charge in your normal day to day driving. Use those as your true calculations as you figure whether it's better to go electric or gas. Lastly we just had the worst customer service I've experienced in a while when it came to their repair shop. Recently I had to take my Model Y to Tesla because the undercarriage piece broke off for going through a puddle! Yes, a puddle on the street made the undercarriage break off. The best part of this is that they would not even cover it under warranty as the Telsa repair MANAGER said that was an "atmospheric event." Do your research and see how many others had the same issue. You should consider this car from all angles before making a decision. Although it is an excellent driving vehicle, you will experience significant frustrations if you ever need to repair it or ever decide to sell your car. Do your own research on all of these issues and draw your own conclusions.

Paul. The 250kw charging is only achievable at a Tesla supercharger. A CCS2 plug standard is limited to 500A as show when charging. Tesla superchargers can achieve 650+A on 400v battery to achieve full 250kw.
@johncanalese588

The NACS (Tesla design), charge plug and socket is ONLY fitted to North American model Tesla’s. The Rest of the World (ROW), uses the CCS2 standard so all ROW Tesla’s have CCS2 fitted and so limited to 500A@400VDC max. So the V2 Superchargers installed by Tesla in the ROW market will only ever be able to deliver 200kW peak! Hmm.. so Tesla is now fraudulently lying by advertising a 250kW charge rate on their vehicles that can NEVER be achieved.

I hate that the speedo etc are in the middle, like a Yaris from the early 2000’s… They could’ve at least added a hud projected on the windscreen.

I like your honest review. Most other reviewers are Tesla Fanboys. People say Tesla is a sw company but to me they arent that good at it. Yes they are much much better tgan the competition. If Apple would to make a car it would kick Tesla's butt in every aspect. For some reason jo other serious condender from the valley. I xan see, it takes a lot more $$.

Applied for a lease on a myp and got denied with a 800+ credit score no credit debt at all. Yet I apply for a 2023 Jeep grand Cherokee summit with a msrp of 72k and get approved on the spot with 0 down no proof of income etc. is that a common thing with Tesla to deny someone who has 20 years of credit with 100% on time payments?

We just took delivery of a Performance Model Y on May 10 here in Bangkok. Our Shanghai Made version has the latest AMD processor plus all the sensors and radar. We have front passenger electrical controls. We are now in the hottest time of the year in Bangkok with the most sun. We have no trouble with keeping cool in our car in the middle of the day as the coatings on the top glass are so good and the air conditioner will freeze you out. Every thing works great from delivery. Matter of fact we had zero delivery complaints about fit and finish. It’s boring to talk about but it was perfect. Tesla helped by arranging an installer to place a wall charger in their new operating area here in Bangkok. At the time of deliver and now there are only three superchargers in all of Thailand. Hopefully they will add more soon to ease our normal travel around Thailand that we have been taking our Everest to go to Trat/Kon Chang, Cheng Mai and Sometimes Krabi and Phuket. Since we charge at home we guess we will have much use for superchargers in town. Unlike so many reviewers we understand that “fiddling” with screen is not very necessary as it is a voice command car. This reviewer is hasn’t found the luxury of the voice command. Apparently he hasn’t even found that the Tesla has different Drive modes as he stated that there were none so the performance model S has chill mode, as well as normal performance, mode and track mode just as a note. We have now realized that this new Tesla is going to cost us more money than we thought as it make owning and driving regular car seem so ridicules. We are going to sell the other cars and order another Tesla.

Charging speed of model Y was limited by maximum current of DC charger (500A). For 400 V battery maximum is 400x500=200kW, depending on actual voltage. 800V battery has twice the voltage so it could teoretically charge 2x faster with same current.
@johncanalese588
@johncanalese588 Год назад
I think you’re confusing charging rate with the peak rate. Clearly the Tesla advertised 250kW is a best condition peak rate. By your logic the 400V charger can clearly supply 200kW continually but Paul’s said his real-world average charge rate is about 120kW when going from 10-80%SOC! This has ALL to do with the onboard charge controller and battery architecture - principally thermal management of the batteries, which clearly demonstrates a “ramp” rather than “flat” charge curve.
