I've ordered a Tesla Model Y! And we've finally had the chance to drive one on Australian roads. Australia gets two variants of the Tesla Model Y - the entry level (tested here) and the Model Y Performance (which we are yet to test). Is it any good? Paul Maric finds out!

Hey everybody! Three updates! As mentioned in the video - I have some more detail. Charging is capped at 170kW DC for the base model Model Y. Power and torque is same as the entry-level Model 3 SR+, so 220kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The price of the car also went up after we filmed, it’s now $72,300 before on-road costs. Thanks for your patience!

I ordered the Model Y with 20" induction wheels and noticed the majority of RU-vid reviewers from AU and the UK mentioning the ride quality as a significant issue. Just like in this review. This week, I went for a test drive with the 19" standard and felt the ride quality was pretty good. I have a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to compare and contrast, and it's not too far off, granted I only spend 20 minutes in the car! I found that I actually really like 19" standard wheels in person on a white car and am quite pleased with the ride quality. I'm proceeding with the purchase.

Think the problem with all these road tests is they watch the other reviews and then just say the same, like the ride quality, drove a couple of Y’s before I ordered mine, didn’t think the ride was harsh, ordered a long range white with white interior with factory tow bar, expected delivery is Oct-December

Drove the car with the 19's yesterday and can report its a much nicer drive. It was really pleasant. I hate my Model 3 Performance on Sydney roads and think I might let it go for a Y. Thanks for a great review, Paul - you continue to set the standard for thoroughness, honesty and accuracy, and all with healthy dollops of good humour and personality. Ive been hanging-out for a Y for a while, but had to buy something ICE (Outback). Poor ride would be a deal-breaker for me. I'm pretty sure that when Sandy Munro did his thorough tear-down of the Y he mentioned that the chassis seemed to have fittings for an adaptive suspension, which would come close to making the car an exceptional machine. Like you, I think a HUD ought to be mandatory, and the stop-watching-the road to check your speed and other things is a serious flaw. I also think the car is not attractive, but I've seen uglier (like the first BMW X6, for example), but the interior is so very practical. When I'm ready to replace my Outback, this is one of the first vehicles I'll be looking at.

This ridiculous story that you have to look away from the road to see the speedo is getting so old…. Any time you move your eyes you are effectively blind. Your mind just makes up the image in between. Looking down or slightly left and down is exactly the same. If you can’t learn to glance in a different place you can buy a phone mount that replaces the top cover of the steering column, and an app will function as second display.

@@ianmcfadyen2609 Yes, you are fully right. Probably that is the reason and should be adjusted before handing the car over. I wonder if the journalists who review the car check this before testing (note that the car only shows you a warning when the tyres have less-than-required air in them but not if you over-inflate) and I see many reviews giving a bad press to the MY for stiff ride. Love your honest reviews, Paul. From a design perspective I think Tesla should have differentiated the headlights and tail lights to make it look distinctly different from the Model 3. It’s hard not to say it’s anything other than a bloated Model 3. Nonetheless, it’ll sell hundreds of thousands of units because of its practicality. If there’s one thing Tesla are good at, it’s doing things differently and challenging the norm - the Saab of current day IMHO.

My 2020 M3 (US) has voice recognition navigation. No need to type in destinations. Also, previous destinations are retained in memory for call up. Car location in the app is a bit sketchy. Formerly, I could monitor my wife while she drove home, with the car centered on the screen as the map scrolled. Something changed with an update and now the app bullseyes the car, but then the map is static and the car drives off the screen and must be “chased” to see it’s progress. Another shortcoming (common to all 3 & Y at least) is no backup, cross traffic warning. While the rear camera view is fairly broad, a head check is necessary. To be clear however, it does alert as objects are approached. And don’t get me started on tire noise and firm ride. On the plus side, my Dual Motor ran 12.2 @ 118mph through the 1/4 mile!

Another tech machine that if the screen fails ,your stuffed , all the control via the screen ,got to be a problem . 60.grand for a base model ,one surely has to look at what you get in a petrol equivalent. Forgot to add 'nice review'. Another issue i found really annoying is the need to take your eyes off the road to look left for speedo and other things. And yes, trying to change settings on the screen while driving is very dangerous - i can't recall the nbr of near misses i had during my 3 day drive. A traditional screen in front of the steering wheel would be essential for me. I'd have to look at the after market options. And while I'm at it, the voice cmd system sucks - not only is it not intuitive, you have to put on a slight American drawl for the computer to recognise your voice. It's these small issues that really detract from what is essentially a great car (but too expensive for what it is).

A very informative, (even for a new owner) and enjoyable review - thank you. The dash cam requires you to hoot when an incident occurs, a period before and after the event is recorded. Also, a solid state storage device to replace the existing stick located in the glove box. So right about the app Paul; brilliant. As for it's looks: for me, the MY is much better looking than the M3.(of course the S is the real beauty of range.) I recently received my Red/White LR with Gemini wheels which I run naked. I never tire of looking at the car from different angles. I agree that the car is not as beautiful as the sum of those lovely different angles; I see echoes of 60's and 80's Italian styling. Perhaps I have an over fertile imagination. What really matters is that I love the car to bits whether in or out and, of course, she is wonderful to drive....sometimes I have to pinch myself to prove I'm not dreaming.

How about a spare tire? I didn’t even see a tire repair set or anything like that? One major reason I did get a Toyota hybrid instead of the plug-in hybrid which I wanted to get was that it’s not possible to fit in the plug-in a standard spare tire because of the larger battery. I had to buy the spare wheel myself but I gladly did. Would you be possible to fit one in a Tesla? And to all people that tell me oh you don’t need a spare tire anymore: after only owning my Toyota for about six months we had a very large church event for our daughter which involves me driving about people to and from church and the day before I hit a pedestrian crosswalk doing about 50 km an hour which instantly tore a sidewall of one of my tires in shreds. Didn’t do anything to the wheel or to the car that was the tire fit system Toyota supplies as a standard I would’ve been absolutely f*cked. And no dealer has this tire in stock so it had to be ordered which took three days. But because I had a spare tire it just took me 20 minutes and I could do all the driving needed on that weekend which saved my day and my daughters and the rest of the families weekend. So to me it’s: no spare tire (or at least an emergency tire) absolutely no sale

Paul - are you going to add a fer accessories to yours. I think the electric frunk kit (aftermarket) would make the MY. I think its worth doing. Also I see there are a number of suspension (aftermarket) kits available but all seem like a fairly major install. I think as time goes on and these get more popular in AU/NZ we will see easier/better strut kits become available. Love your reviews and cant wait for a few more MY reviews on your new one.

The fact that you can/should charge to 100% every day in this base model Y, due to it's LFP batteries is very important, since you get the full range every day. In the LR and Performance versions the use NMC batteries and they should only be charged to 80% daily and only occasionally to 100%. This means that as a daily commuter you have more range available compared to LR and Performance. This is not mentioned in this test.

I test drove a MYP also MiC and I compared it to my Citroën Grand C4 Picasso with special concern to suspension. The MYP was much more comfortable than the C4, the problem with the C4 is that the suspension is actually too soft making the car "dancing" around on a rough road, the MYP ran the rough road much more comfortable even with higher speed. I ordered a MY LR with the original wheels, I just need to make sure that the wheels are not inflated too much.

Test drive today. Those seats made my back sweaty. Would much prefer a breathable material - real leather or at least this material with quilting/perforated stick or similar. It's basically a return to 70s vinyl - not impressive on an $80k car. Back row seats seem low, and not as much thigh length - meaning comfort for bigger kids/adults not as good with distance. Drives nicely though. Firm, very direct steering, rode potholes nicely. Apparently much better batteries coming next year. I'd take an Ionic 5 over this if I could get one. Or step down in price to an Atto 3 for a runabout.
