One thing about lighter wheels they will be more efficient when city driving. Less mass to rotate and at lower speeds the aerodynamics are not as important! Great video!

My P3D has VS Forged 19" VS08's. You're right, being able to order specific size/width/offsets you want, as well as finishes, mine are powdercoated, is a big advantage for custom wheels. Really strong while still being lightweight is a great combo.Having a color/size/wheel combo not seen on other threes always brings questions from other owners.

i1Tesla, could you do a video comparing the Überturbines and the Induction wheels on the performance model Y? My Tesla rep says they do not fit over the performance brakes, but there are several people 'on the internet' saying they do. And then test performance 0-60 as well as range changes? (and weight differences) Would be a great test!

My setup on a long range M3: square setup, 19” by 9.5” wide, +35 offset turbine style wheels (23lb. each), with Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2 K120 tires at 255/40/R19 XL front and rear (26lb each). Rear has 5mm spacers. Range decrease is about 7-8% from OEM 18” Aero. Have yet to do performance measures, as tires are still being broken in. I expect to see better cornering, better high speed handling. The increase in rolling resistance and weight from larger wheels should be mostly offset by the increase in width allowing for more traction at launch. Thus, expected 0-60 marginally slower, if not the same.

Brian, curious if you and Kyle would collaborate on a related video for effectively changing the gear ratio of the Tesla by installing smaller overall diameter wheel/tire combo? Using stealth performance model with standard brakes, fitting the smallest wheel that will slide over the caliper along with the smallest profile tire available would alter the Tesla final gear ratio. It would provide for quicker 0-60 at the expense of top speed. Might be an interesting video I haven't seen anyone else cover.

Brian, love your video. I have the performance Y, red, without the performance upgrade. This gets me the 19 inch Gemini wheels. Not as good looking is a fact but not terrible. The delivery site failed to include the covers and I did not realize they were missing when I picked them up. The ride is very smooth and quiet and as I don’t go to a track the car does what I need, and is crazy fast, and quiet and smooth. Just not as pretty. With that said I would love to see a comparison of the Gemini to the performance wheel options. Thoughts on powder coating the stock Gemini? I can get this done in Waco for 95 a wheel. Keep making great videos! Jim

Brian, I noticed you didn't say what size the tires were on the wheels you were talking about. Please provide the tire sizes that are on the wheels that you are showing. Something like: These are 19" wheel with 255x40x19, or 18" wheel with 235x45x18, or 20" wheel with 235x35x18, or 255x40x20, or 21" wheels with 275x35x21 and 255x35x21.

My stock tires on my MYP are toast at 22,000 miles. I'm also looking to downsize the wheels and get tires with more sidewall to help with the ride on the roads in my town. Plus I understand some tires are quieter than the stock.

My back tires lasted 22,000 miles on my y performance and cost 500/tire. At 39,000 miles I replaced all 😊with Gemini wheels and continental all season tires! Way cheaper to replace, last longer and a little bump in total range (20 miles).

Brian (and other owners). I'm looking into a Long Range AWD Y. I like the 20" wheel upgrade but am curious about ride quality. I'm looking mostly for range and ride comfort, not track runs or racing. While I'd make due with the base 19" wheels in a pinch, I like the upgrade wheels. I know the upgrade on the long range is a 20" wheel with 45 aspect tires (I think). Any comments from owners with 19" base and 20" upgraded wheels about ride quality would be appreciated...

Thoughts on induction vs. Gemini? Are the inductions significantly more likely to have issues with potholes? I think they’re 40 vs the Gemini 45 profile. I think the inductions look great on the white or black paint but worried about pothole damage or curb rash.

Maybe ignorant question but the $5k listed in the Signature website is for a set of 4 wheels and not each? ….I mean, the Model Y isn’t a 250k super car. I do like the fact you can dial in your center bore, diameter, width, offset and even powdercoat.

@bobfolline5584
@bobfolline5584 2 года назад
Interesting gut feel analysis but would be much better with some actual numbers. Wind tunnel testing does not agree with gut feeling in that the problem with Tesla turbine and uber turbine is that they are all the same directional and that does not match airflow over the car. Should be angles backwards from rotation left and right. Teslas numbers say that the wheels wider than the tires give best economy due to tapered edge vs square edge profile. With aero covers this get better. With larger wheels the taper is not as good so worse. I guess I will have to run my own tests using efficient tires in both cases since most tests are putting 18" low rolling on performance vs sticky 20 or 21"

glad you brought up the blades.. so what exactly is the reason for the blades and why arent there right and left side rims ... the blades act like a fan of sorts .... one side is sucking air under the car and the other side is blowing it out ..... shouldn't they both be doing one or the other .... as in ... high-speed autobon driving at 150 mph +.... would it cause handling issues to have air being sucked in on one side and blown out on the other side ... could that cause drift .... or if they were designed to be right and left with both sucking air under the car to provide lift ( it is a heavy car) could that cause a problem at higher speeds .... or.... if they were designed to suck the air out from under the car, sucking it down to the ground and giving extra stability and traction at high speeds ... I have seen wheels like this on several other vehicles and it always makes me wonder about the aerodynamics

@thetuxedotesla1149
@thetuxedotesla1149 3 года назад
Thank you for the video. 🙏🏼 Getting my Model Y in 2 weeks. I'm thinking about putting 19 or 20' on my MY but I don't want to sacrifice too much range for a cool look. T sportline makes a 19 & 20" version of the Uberturbines. I was told that the design of the Ubers are so aerodynamically efficient that even though they're really heavy wheels you still get efficiency like smaller and lighter wheels. So if the T sportline 19 Ubers (TSV) have that design and are lighter than the 21 Ubers & 19 Gemini's, would they be about as efficient as the Gemini's? This seemed like a good solution but I wanted to check before I decide what to buy. I also looked at Martians and love them but almost every wheel out there, even the lighter ones seem to lose a lot of effeciency since they're not aerodynamic. In fact I've had some people say the 20" Martian wheel uses the same w/hr as a 21" much much heavier Uberturbine. 😳 At least that's what people say. Hence it seems like the aerodynamic factor is the most important vs wheel weight when it comes to range right? Long story to ask you if you think I'll be good range wise and comfort wise if I got the 19" TSV's that have the same design as the 21" Ubers. Thank you so much. 🙏🏼
@th3w4nted

Did you ever make a decision about getting the TSVs? If so, were you able to compare the efficiency against your Gemini wheels?

Hi Brian! I've watched all of your *Amazing* videos - Thank you so much for keeping us *Up-to-Speed* (pun intended) on Tesla's! :) I'm anxiously awaiting my 2020 Red Model Y performance with PUP. This configuration comes with the 21" Uberturbine wheels but decreases the mileage from 315 without PUP to 280. Is the reduction of mileage attributed to staggered and wider tires on the Unberturbine wheel, or because it's a 21" wheel or that the wheel is much heavier? Thanks Brian!

If the factor blades on the Uberturbine were designed to be efficient, would the other side of the vehicle be less efficient as the blades face the wrong direction? I'm not too fond of directional wheels that flip the pattern depending on the side of the car you are looking at.

We are the few wheel companies that honor warranty even if the wheels is solely for track use. Signature Jamie I appreciate that. I raced cars for many years. But if you’re really garnering just looks that’s a lot for looks. But like I said if people got the money to burn then more power to them. In racing there is a state of diminishing returns. Reducing rolling weight is always good. It’s just not something I would want to throw money out for basically looks. Also if you curb one Ouch.

I don’t think at this price point many Tesla customers would jump on any of these Signature wheels. I see some pictures of super cars on their site, those owners can afford expensive wheels, but most model X, S, 3 and Y owners I know, would think twice, and then some before even considering paying $4-6k for the rims only (plus tires and installation). I personally wouldn’t ever spend more than $2.5k for my model Y rims.

I agree, Signature wheel isn’t for everyone. What Signature focused on is custom fitment based on each individual. We own each Tesla model for a period of time. Not only we measured the fitment, but we went a step further of building at least 5 setups to fit on each model and find the best potential fitment combo. ( there can be efficiency setup, track and show setup etc...) Again, it all came down to personal preference, It is the similar to people who choose to spend $8k more on performance upgrade. With an extra by going with Signature, you get the exclusive fitment that other don’t provide, fully forged option with tons of finishing, great warranty and customer service.

It's still not clear to me if range on the Performance Model Y increases to the 315 if you put on the 19" Gemini's. Could you clarify, please?

I don't want a bigger rim. I want a small rim. I really want a 15inch rim. Big rims look stupid to me.

19 or 20 inch for a LR Model Y. Like the look of the 20 but not sure if it’s worth possible ride quality hit, longevity and road rash risk. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tesla factory wheels are the ugliest out there. I have TSW 20 forged wheels on my Y, they are called the Chrono and they are light and awesome looking, and......they are a lot less expensive then anything out there, about 350.00 each. Compare those to the ones in this video which are about 5000.00 which is nuts

I would save your money and buy some Tesla stock...wheels and tires are a waste of money for these cars.
