Thanks for your comment! Yes, the teacher has to take class size into consideration when planning and preparing a listening lesson. In this video, the class of 6 is a good number, and there aren't too many distractions (no one digging up the road outside, as once happened to me, for example!) But you can do listening tasks successfully with larger classes as well, although the teacher needs to control the content and manage the listening environment.

This video is part of the Global English TESOL course and in the course we go into more depth about how to manage a listening lesson and what can go wrong. A common issue is that sometimes the listening we've chosen is just too difficult. In that case, don't be afraid to play lots of times, cut the length of the listening, read the transcript yourself but slower. Be ready to adapt.

Ah possibly in this clip there is too much TTT, Benjamin but we edited the parts out which included student talking in pairs or groups. Otherwise it would have been a 30 min video! This is a teacher training video to support our global-english TESOL courses so you can see what the role of the teacher is in class.

Dear Miss.. Why you didn"t write the difficult words on board before listening?

Beware of teacher 'tics' like 'OK'. Be consistent with moderated speed of speaking.

Good point - although it is OK for students to hear authentic speaking patterns - as long as the meaning is not lost and they can understand. It does mirror real-life conversation better than teacher speak.

It is good ,but we have to put " false echo " into consideration that the teacher made!!

Hello 45below1, is it a Global English TESOL course you are on? If so you are welcome to contact your personal tutor or us in the office as we are all TESOL qualified. Really happy to advise our trainees and help if we can.

Thank you, William. Actually, I am currently associated with another European (Ireland) TEFL organization. I really need to take it more seriously though, not to say that I do not value what is being taught, but that I often find that my schedule conflicts. Do you have any suggestions as to any literature that I might buy to better gain a grasp on the "art" of lesson planning?

If you are following a course that has been accredited by a worthwhile body, then you should have some opportunity to do some lesson planning and have that assessed by a tutor. However, if it's more of a 'tick, tick, cross' course with minimal tutor input, then you will have to fend for yourself a bit. I would encourage you to contact your tutor, get stuck in and get the qualification completed if you can. However, this book, now in it's 4th edition, was a great help to me when I was starting out many years ago: www.amazon.co.uk/Practice-English-Language-Teaching-Handbooks/dp/1447980255/ref=dp_ob_title_bk Jeremy Harmer writes clearly and succinctly so it's very handy when you are starting out and there is a DVD accompanying it showing teaching in action. Also, Scrivener writes on lesson planning in Ch 6 of this book: www.amazon.co.uk/Learning-Teaching-Students-Teachers-MacMillan/dp/0230729843/ref=pd_sim_14_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=R40M8Z75BV00FAC65BX8 so one of the two would be worth getting hold of. Here are some initial tips for teaching a first lesson: www.global-english.com/news/7-classroom-tips-for-the-new-efl-teacher/ and my colleague Louisa (from the video above) has written this, which you might find helpful: www.global-english.com/news/tefl-lessons-5-top-tips-for-lesson-success/ The internet is awash with TEFL resources, but www.onestopenglish.com/ and www.breakingnewsenglish.com/ are a couple of sites I recommend to our trainees at Global English TESOL. All that said, I found there was nothing better than finding some students to practise on, offering free lessons and getting some experience under my belt 25 years ago. It really does help give a bit of confidence. Hope that's a little helpful? Best of luck!
