In-ear-monitor mix drum vid from TESSERACT Latin America Tour - 'Retrospect' and 'Resist', recorded live in Curitiba, Brazil 25th March 2023.
This was the very first show of the TesseracT Latin America tour, so you'll probably hear my excitement, rushing ahead of the metronome occasionally (oops!) - I blame the amazingly energized crowd 😂
This is a mix between my IEMS and the board mix, so you can hear a little more of the live mix. My IEM mix is pretty much just drum overheads, the metronome, and guitars. Plus I have the Porter and Davies throne to help with the THUMP.

It's ok to push ahead on the top end of the click sometimes! Keeps the energy up in the energetic parts if done right, and you certainly did it right, especially on resist. In my opinion there's a huge difference between rushing and pushing/hanging back on the metronome. Awesome vid and especially loved the energy!

Thank you for posting these videos. As a drummer in a band I aspire to do similar content that shows "behind the scenes" footage that people normally won't see or think of. Thank you for putting in all the work that you do. You are a big inspiration to my own musical journey and the things you show as a musician have been imprinted onto me. It was a great show. Unfortunately it wasn't a huge venue, so it wasn't packed with people, but you could tell that whoever was there was having a great night. Anyway, great finally seeing you guys live, as a person who have been following the band since the old demos from the myspace days.

If possible, besides the amazing drumming, I am amazed with the sound of the drums overall in most of the videos, and as a sound engineer, I am really curious of the mic kit that you guys are using (except the amazing d6 on toms and the sm7b on hh which I could see from the videos). I'm sure the answer is obviously yes, but are the claves in the click track your cue for the next song/parts where you come back in? Also wonder if you do anything similar to Muse where they have a voice say the name of the track before the click comes in?

@@TunnelJumper DW is definitely a step up but Sabian makes great cymbals. It's more a matter of taste. I play a mix of Sabian and Meinl.

I've been DW for a long time now - they're my romantic drum company for sure. Meinl switch made total sense as not only are their cymbals LUSH, their artist support is next-next level.

What do you find is the benefit from the angle of your snare? Do you find having the click, as such a main focus, means you're disconnected from the band and the audience somewhat?

Rim shots are easy with the angle. I tend to play to the song in my mind more than anywhere else. If the crowd are going for it, and I can see the guys are energized, that's all I need. We're a weird band.

@@JayTesseracT Don't think I've missed a rimshot with a flat snare in 15 years, didn't know it was easier with the angle. I don't think I've ever played with people that play things one way and don't randomly change things, I guess if you know they're doing their parts, you can concentrate and play around with yours. Sounds like a really great recording mix for me. Need that click loud for recording. Nice to hear a bit more vocals in this mix than the last!

Very nice dynamics playing live without hitting like an ape for attention..let the mic keep the right tones..this how you play with intention guys.take notes.He records a lot of his playing and it shows.
