+Str8Faced By far my favourite drummer of all time. I just love how it is so obvious that he is having a fucking blast doing what he loves, not taking himself too seriously and all that like some others.
53:00 "Time is very precious. It really is. We live on this planet for such a limited time. We waste it needlessly, ok? But for you to be here tonight, spending sixty minutes of your lifetime with us is the biggest privilege we could ever have. Thank you so much." -Dan Tompkins
+Sam Y I love how throughout the concert, Dan thanked the audience 3-4x and expressed his gratitude for their ears, support, and generosity. Class act.
Thank you so much Century Media for putting this concert on RU-vid. Tesseract is extremely underrated IMHO and one day people will realize just how great they really are ;)
Brandon Wright minute 27:34 to 42:22! in Altered state they are titled with "of matter. of mind" etc in front of them, so that collective piece is Proxy, Retrospect and Resist :)
cody thompson I think Dan sings nearly in the same range as Ashe, I really liked the athmosphere of Alterred State so I´d say they mixed perfectly. Nevertheless I also prefer Dan, hes just incredible :)
"Hey it's been a few weeks since I've watched Odyessy/Scala. I think I'll watch a few songs." *Proceeds to watch entire concert because it's so damn good*
+Ryan Merica Couldn't agree more. Saw them yesterday and they've conquered every other band I've seen live. Including MUSE, who is rated the best live band in the world. So much more passion in Tesseract.
I was about to cry, so I understand them. And with three songs left (April, Nocturne and Acceptance) the fire alarm started. One of the worst moment of my life.. Luckily they shut it off after a few minutes and they could finish the show. Woah
Performing someone else's work is always going to be Risky because that artist is instantly going to be compared to and judged with automatic bias towards the original. And I hate to even enter the stupid Dan vs Ashe debate which is plaguing every Tesseract post on the internet but: No vocalist is absolutely perfect every show, especially when they push the limits as far as Tesseract does. I love Ashe, but even he was FAR from perfect on his OWN material and his stage presence wasn't even near as exhausting as Dan's. Dan is killing it.
Molitoth That wasn't whistle register. It was certainly up there, but it wasn't technically whistle register. Regardless, those were impressive notes. d-_-b
I've been a metal fan for 20+ plus years. I'm extremely picky when it comes to down to it. I can jam to almost all sorts of metal and/or rock music, being a drummer myself. My go to band has been Lamb of God for many, many years. As the Palaces Burn, Ashes of the Wake, and Sacrament being, in my opinion, the best metal albums ever produced. But being a musician myself I always keep finding myself listening to Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders or even so far back as Dream Theater for their progressive style and technical prowess. Collectively and "individually" as bands. Then I stumble upon these guys. They completely blew my mind. This to me IS perfection. I listened to one song on a Finnish radio station boasting about the latest album Polaris and I was hooked. Fucking instantly. It was like heroin for my ears. I got home after work and I got the best music "drug high" of my life... along with a few beers. Nothin' else. ;) I can't praise you guys enough.
+00ptiic AND. I'm 'onna do my best to catch you guys live when you come up to the freezing noridic countries in the spring of -16. Stockholm being the best bet since you guys aren't gonna be conquering Finland the upcoming year.
steelhorseclub I talked to someone who was there and he can assure that they sounded tight, but this mix definitely has some compressions added and has been mastered.
BLFilms View the full performance from the November 6th, 2014 show in London! Available on CD/DVD & LP/DVD! That is in the video description my friend, this was one show.
MrSharpShape No but in terms of the sound recording, each song is from a different gig: Odyssey (audio) Official Tracklisting 1. Singularity (recorded in Moscow, Russia) 2. Deception - Concealing Fate Part Two (recorded in Birmingham, UK) 3. The Impossible - Concealing Fate Part Three (recorded in Nottingham, UK) 4. Perfection/Epiphany - Concealing Fate Parts Four/Five (recorded in Rome, Italy) 5. Origin - Concealing Fate Part Six (recorded in Strasbourg, France) 6. Of Matter - Proxy (recorded in Koln, Germany) 7. Of Matter - Retrospect (recorded in Nijmegen, Netherlands) 8. Of Matter - Resist (recorded in Budapest, Hungary) 9. April (recorded in Paris, France) 10. Nocturne (recorded in Manchester, UK) 11. Acceptance - Concealing Fate Part One (recorded in Moscow, Russia)
BLFilms The site indicates that the CD/LP (Odyssey) was indeed recorded on different locations, but the DVD (Scala) was live from a single show. Having just listened to my vinyl I can say the mastering/recording is not the exact same as the DVD. But both are awesomeness.
Animals as Leaders, Chon, Persefone, Behold... The Arctopus, Haken, Between the Buried and Me, There are literally tons of bands tighter than this band lol. They aren't very technical
+Keegan Alek Yeah, there are plenty of bands that play more technical riffs, but imo most of them lack the killer groove that Tesseract manages to pull off, even with all the polyrhythms they're playing over
I had goosebumps through the whole Of Matter movement... needless to say Jay, Acle, James and Amos are doing their jobs with sheer perfection. And to top off, Dan is singing even Ashes songs with a passion you don't see very often. This is high quality musicianship.
This band is nothing short of spectacular. What a special special live performance. The atmosphere, the vibe... Incredible. Surreal. We all know what incredible musicians all these men are. Nothing needs to be added there. Its great to have Dan back! One of my favorite singers! That said, credit where its due, its impossible to say who's "better".. But my god.. The vocal parts Ashe wrote for the Altered State songs are just.. Mind blowing. They connect with you in the most gut wrenching way. The feels trip during Retrospect and Resist right now were nothing short of spiritual. What a special band. Cannot wait for album no.3!
Nederland Schaak Dan is phenomenal Ashe uses his voice like an instrument and can create some very intricate and unique harmonies, which is why I like Ashe a little more. But they both kill it and are my personal top two favourite vocalists!
I loved Altered State for that reason. The whole album has like you said "almost spiritual" undertones throughout. Almost like an ominous warning of something. Beautiful.
The deep growls from Amos were so intense! TesseracT is really a so very passionate and skilled band, the feeling in every note, the performance, perfection. Needless to say the instruments were so damn in flow. Daniel really just killed it with his voice. He really has such a great range of possibilities and he does really cool variations and he also does that live. Please guys, promise me only one thing: always look up for yourselves, be safe, stay cool and keep on making passionate fucking music
Given the technicality of each of their songs, this has to be one of the best live performances ever recorded. Everyone was top notch, Dan's voice was silky smooth 'till the end, the drums are irreproachable, the bassist and the guitarist kick ass... The mixing is so bloody good every song sounds like the one from their CD.
PeculateMusic As a drummer, this pains me so much when this happens at concerts. Some people just ignore the rhythm of the song entirely and everyone just follows along loll
PeculateMusic The whole band are wearing in ears and are playing to a click so it's super aggravating. I play drums and control the laptop so if my band got ourselves into a situation like this and and I were having a bad day, I'd momentarily pan the click back towards the FOH during a clapping fail just to troll.
Really dude? You're actually mad about this? Their having a good time so get the fuck over it and let them enjoy their night, they paid the money to see the show..
I'll just say this on Dan and Ashe as vocalists, and these are just my speculations and opinions: Ashe has a softness and silkyness in his voice that Dan does not and will never get. That quality is what I liked about Ashe on Altered State. It was a softer album in many ways, more produced, as well, which fit his voice. Ashe is a natural singer, born with that soulful voice, not a lot of training, if I was to guess. However, Dan has a more raw and brutal, sort of on the nose approach to singing, he holds on to the notes in a very captivating way (at least to me), his melodies are different than most, and of course, he screams, and god I loved his screaming on One. One is also a rawer album, there is less vocal layering, but it's also very hypnotic to me, the instrumental parts are just so good. These qualities are what I loved about One. I'm guessing Dan gained his vocal talents, which the man has in spades, no doubt about that, through training and experience. I'm thinking he had to fight and work his ass off to get his voice where he wanted it to be, which is how I feel you can differentiate between Ashe and Dan's approaches to singing, but I may be reading way too much into my own guesses and wild speculations. If it's not apparent, I like them both equally, for different reasons that I feel have as much merit as the other. Also, Dan's voice wasn't at his full range when this was recorded, so just know that he can do better than what is already pretty darn good here:)
@@twinny_mi It’s absolutely stellar. He really made it his own, in a great, great way. Plays around with it to suit his range and comfort, and still hits dem high notes. Can’t wait for new material from them, because man, what a singer, what a band!
I'm not very familiar with the singers that the band has had, could you tell me in what albums have singed one and the other? I've tried searching it but I didn't find anything. And your analysis was very interesting 💙
This is awesome! Just finished watching the whole thing. Purely amazing. Dan hits almost every single note perfectly! Near flawless instrumentation from everyone else. This band kicks ass!
I thought that only O'hara could sing Altered State. I'm truly astonished. Ashe has a voice that you cannot find anywhere else, but Dan is absolutely insane. Chapeau to both: they're exaggerately terrific.
I was very impressed with Dan absolutely nailing “Singularity”. He has a slightly lower range, but I’ve noticed that he’s better at singing completely in tune.
I got major goosebumps when Dan enters the scene at 1:33 with the hardest vocal passage on all of their albums to date and he nails it like a champ!! Beyond impressed at how good this sounds live.
i just saw them and honestly it still sounded similar to this. i believe they bring their own sound guy on the road because the sound was just so tight
cooliocaptin517 I don't doubt that they sound great live, but dry through a board with no other mixing would be ridiculous. I've been around enough audio production to recognize a well mixed sound when I hear one.
Praise God for the youth of today carrying the torch and making REAL music!!!! These boys are on the top of my current recommendations for anyone with a brain. Live long and please prosper - and keep writing! - from an old fart who had the providence of growing up with "Kansas" (the band) in Topeka, Kansas (when first "Kansas" album was released) and who had the pleasure of opening for Dream Theater on their 1st album tour when they were the youth carrying the torch.
Love this band. Just have one questions, and by no means am I a professional musician like some of you apparently are that comment on these videos. But why don't you hear any like blistering guitar solos from these guys during their songs? They are clearly some of the best musicians around but you don't hear any solos.
Guitar solos wont compliment TesseracTs music as its just not that style. you wont find many solos in progressive music. vocals take care of the melodies and the instruments are strictly rhythmic or ambient, in this case any ways.
Agreed! They have a very clear image of what they want artistically... Everything, from the compositions, the lyrics, the guitar tones, their logo, their album covers seem to be connected. This is one of the most unique and amazing bands on the planet.
I've probably watched this two dozen times over the last week. These guys are so solid, and Dan is perfection live. Can't wait to see them in November!
Never heard a band sing so well in a live concert!! This right here is pure talent, no computers, no tricks, just talent, and this goes unrecognized completely!! Human mainstream stupidity knows no boundaries!!!
to be fair, everything they do live is computer based, they run the whole show from a computer. But they still play live and have proven to master their instruments. Using computers live is totally acceptable :)
No, they are running Steinberg Cubase throughout the show. Basically they are playing along to the studio version. Synths, extra guitars, harmony vocals, loops, all that stuff is from a laptop which is on the left side of the stage. I believe they also use it to program all the sound changes for the guitars (no pedal board dancing) and I'm assuming they run the light cues as well as they are so tightly synched up with the music.
On one hand, I wish Dan would stop having stage presence so maybe he could draw out some of those notes bit a longer. But on the other hand, it's refreshing as fuck to see a progressive metal band that plays complex music that also has stage presence and doesn't stare at their feet constantly.
AWESOME PERFORMANCE! BRAVO!!! I know there are some Ashe's widows arround, and I respect them because Altered State it's such a perfect piece of art....but NO ONE can deny that Dan hits those high notes way better!! I mean... He can really hit 'em live! Amazing! P.S.: It would have been perfect having Eden on that setlist!! I need more than 1 hour of this perfection!!!
Dan has made Altered State his own in a way he hadn't yet done here. He's also improved a lot as a vocalist generally. That's the main difference I think.
I know i'm probably gonna get a shit ton of hate for this, but I'm really not a fan of Dan. In my opinion, Ashe is a better vocalist and suited Tesseract more. But yeah, just my opinion.
Of course he can, but I think he can't replicate Ashe's energy. There was something in Ashe's voice which made Altered State have its own special touch.
@@stoyanorozov7279 That I won't deny. Ashe's vocals in Altered state are otherwordly. But Dan's vocals are also a very complimenting and super suitable fit for it.
I was one of those guys who thought Ashe was a better fit for Tesseract, but damn. Dan has gotten so much better, this is awesome. Edit: After listening to Polaris, I am a bit less impressed with Dan. He is a great live performer, but I think he is a much better fit in Skyharbor, and either Elliot or Ashe could have made Polaris a much better record.
i love how jay's bass drum sounds, natural and muffled, no triggers (if he uses triggers, he does a damn well job at choosing his samples, i hate when bass drums sound like typewriters)
It feels like Dan is a lot cooler and in touch with the fans. I met Ashe and he came of as a little bit of of an asshole. I mean still cool and all, but all he did was make fun of my iPhone. Ashe was one hell of a singer , but Dan has ridiculous charisma and energy.
Greatest band to ever exist. Period. I’m not sure I’ve gone a single day in a year without listening to them. Dan and the crew are absolutely unreal. Cannot wait to see them live one day.
