Back in the day when Radio Shack was still around, I made my own sets of jumper wires for electrical testing. Bought some speaker wire and alligator clamps, still use them today.

I actually made complete sets of these about 6 ft 10 ft 14 ft long each using 14 gauge silicon wire as Joe is doing all in matching colors and ends for my SnapOn Verus oscilloscope so I could keep the Verus in my roll around or on a bench. They were a quarter the cost of bought and work great. Also a good quality flux is important.

I was glad to see you use the flux.. I would recommend that to everyone. Don't skip the flux.. The flux in the solder is not always going to be enough if the surface isn't tinned.

Joe, great video! Just a few thoughts: First-off, it is really great that you show tech's how to do this because they will never be out of luck! Second, I am actually Mil_Std certified for soldering with emphasis on missile systems. That being said, when you were NOT totally filling the solder-cup area, you were actually doing it correctly! This is called 'contour-soldering' and is the correct way to do it for several reasons. First, you actually have a solder-connection that is 'inspectable' whereas if you fill it, you have no idea if you really have a 'cold' connection inside a solder-blob! You should be able to see the individual strands always; some will say that solder-blobs are stronger but if that is you aim, you really have issues! Next, if you've applied enough solder to have a solder-blob, then you have also 'wicked' solder up further inside the insulation and created a sharp-delineation that can cause individual strands to break instead of bending; it seem counter-intuitive but has testing behind it. Finally, many solder blobs are actually 'cold-joints' because a large mass of solder was quickly applied and leaves a bulbous structure not 'wetted' to the rest of the connection structure; you should be able to see the molten-part of the solder mass suddenly sink, thus showing wetting. So Joe, you were doing it right all along...

Yeah like I had commented a while back "like that of John Fluke MFG" and YES if you go somewhere like Greenbrook Electronic's in North Plainfield, NJ you may get some amazing things but like you said they're expensive as hell. You're creating your own tools and you're saving a lot by doing it ... Now you are starting to think and work like that of STADT specialist-the German word for city or in Hebrew (שטאדט) which spells out the acronym Special Tools And Definitive Techniques. If you don't see that as a compliment that's too bad because the world as we know it is in desperate need of people like that :)

Nice demo, I clicked through a few of the choices on your Amazon link. Didn't know about the angle adapters or the excellent silicone wires. Presently Fluke are selling crappy leads with their lower level meters, they are cutting corners for the lowest price point meters. I've made a few test leads through the years but it is reassuring to see a pro do it, very similar to how I did it. I like those piggyback adapters to tie in a scope as well.

One of the last set I bought(From China) had no continuity! And ONE FREAKIN STRAND OF HAIR THIN WIRE!

Joe I got a tip for ya... Use DL Handcleaner (blue package no pumice) and a piece of foam rubber and gently clean your case for the meter and the meter surface (do not get it in the teminals) it will clean it up like magic. works on all surfaces like rubber leather great for steering wheels.

Hi, Yes ive been using those connectors for a while now making leads for my test lights and adaptors for my meter.. I do find sometimes that when soldering the straight connectors the surface can be a bit shiny and the solder dosent stick.. This is where the torch may be better than a soldering iron as you can get more heat into the pin...

I my self not a mechanic like you, I am a builder.But we do similar things just like you. We use what we can and have in a given situation on the spot to atchieve task without compromising quality.

I have had mixed quality when buying Chinese prebuilt leads so I have started repairing and make many of my own as well Joe. If the quality is bad at that point it’s my own fault.

The plug you used has a flat side and a round side (near the soldering area). I've never been able to figure out if that has a purpose as to which side to thread the bare cable.

Good video... I just made 5 different amp leads To plug in fuse box for my budget oscilloscope saved big bucks doing it I love it when I can make my own.

what is the numeric value of resistance when you must change the leads (limit)? Mine self made alligator clips have 0.2 Ohm so I guess they are ok... are they?

Where do you buy components like those and what gauge wire is that? I like the large grounding clip.

I might agree here if you have all of the parts to do so for low cost or free. Otherwise the time investment and low cost for stuff needed otherwise it’s cheaper in the end to buy them at a reasonable price of course. Custom ends are sometimes needed and then it may be better to build your own. In the end you need to decide how valuable you time is and the cost difference from making and buying sometimes it’s better to buy than make.
