Test of Power Steering Pumps as Hydrostatic Drive

I have become pretty interested in hydrostatic hybrid drive systems and wondered if I could use hydraulic power steering pumps to serve as the "transmission" for a mini-bike. The idea would be to have the engine drive a small displacement P/S pump which would in turn "gear down" to a larger displacement P/S pump. Right now it only works if I drive the small pump with the large pump, so I get more RPM, but less torque. I think I may be able to fix the problem with a different (more modern) large pump. We'll see.

We use them for commercial fishing. You take the fitting off of the back and drill the hole out with a 3/8 drill. It will pull anything

Not pointless at all. Thats how inventions and new technology is developed. Good video

thanks for posting this video, i owe you one,i searched for hours on the net to see if this was possible to use a power steering pump as an hydrolic motor to run an alternater

good comment , i like that idea, very good idea, centrifugal clutches suck unless u have very stiff springs and the engine is allowed to hit 80% max rpm before it ingages

wow very cool friend, hey you can make two pumps power one motor to get extremely high rpm's. i amazed at how well the torque is transferred

@Timothy - The idea deserves more development than I gave it. It's difficult for the non-professional to get information on the internals of individual P/S pumps, so one would really have to subject a number of pumps to a number of tests to find the right combination. But, it does seem possible.

Thanks for the helpful suggestion. I do have spare power steering pumps left over from vehicles I junked. I will try to make a machine of some sort. I have plenty of old hoses, hydraulic cylinders, and open center valves to play with, even though they are in poor condition

Theres a patent on this drive for pedal bikes - I was working on something similar and found the patent recently. Remember to allow for coasting... you'll need some sort of bypass valve, etc.

I believe that you just showed me how I'm going to drive my auxiliary alternator! I have a very specific application and theirs no way to drive it directly off the motor

I think i am going to do the same, but to run a Alternator, AC compressor and another power steering pump!

I think this system can be used to drive independent oil pump for rear mount turbocharger, or to drive independent water pump for air to water intercooler. Just an idea though.

11 years ago, but it's just enough info to help find my direction. I've built an attachment for my excavator and want to create a separate hydraulic circuit for it. Taking flow from the existing pump slows everything down. I'll test out the power steer pump with a mag clutch so I can disengage it. Have you gone further with this? Cheers

Do you think it's possible to add a hydraulic hand throttle to control speed and direction? I'm thinking this to act as a clutch and a 1 speed gearbox+reverse for lawnmowers. If I'm right you can create a loop to redirect the fluid to the first pump. And when you redirect a percentage of that fluid out of the loop to the second pump you get traction... What do you think?

The problem with two identical pumps is that you gain no mechanical advantage. Hydraulic systems can be "geared up" or "geared down" by varying the size of the pump relative to the motor(s). So, two of the same Honda P/S pumps would be like a substitute for a 1:1 sprocket set.

I think this may work for adding a PTO to the front of a old garden tractor. Little project I am doing.

Hey buddy !!! Do you know if power steering pumps can pump in there own fluid? I'm talking about a fluid source below the height of the pump.

no they are not a diaphragm pump

Thanks for posting. I have been wondering for years if I could use power steering pumps as hydraulic motors. Maybe braze a cap on top of the reservoir? I guess it would only work in one direction?

That was going to be my comment too. I think a lot of times that's how you determine if a hydraulic unit is a pump or a motor. With a pump, one port is larger. With a motor, both ports are the same size (or sometimes they have 3 ports)

Tork reduce but rpm augmentation 😎

You have to size the pumps based on a combination of their input RPM, pressure rating, and GPM (Gallons Per minute). Then figure you're going to lose at least 10% of input power and RPM under high load. How do I know? I looked into this stuff about five years ago. Still am actually. You CAN mix and match various pieces for a custom application, but to be successful you'll have to do some basic calculations.

try sealing a large V8 engine oil pump gerotor or a chevy/ olds pos disp pump they move a lot of oil w/o much effort

Is it possible to apply this to a right hand to left hand drive conversion? Is the ratio 1-1? How instant is the feedback from one to the other?
@jfbrink
@jfbrink 7 лет назад
I don't see how this could help in an LHD/RHD conversion. The ratio depends on the two pumps involved. Identical pumps would provide (essentially) 1:1. By "instant feedback" do you mean "does the second pump start when the first pump starts"? If so, the answer is more-or-less.

I would say *almost* pointless.
