Today I will test the rolling versus folding method while teaching you many packing strategies. The number one travel tip for the rolling method is to roll tightly. The most important tip for folding method is to flatten it on each step. Test rolling versus folding with me to see which is more helpful for you. #traveltips #rollingvsfolding #packingtips #carryononly

I used to use rolling clothes as my main method. But our daughter got us the Spacepak brand of packing cubes. Folding the clothes works better in that type cube. I love them because it’s a double sided cube with clean on one side and dirty on the other. I put dryer sheets in both sides, and just move the dirty clothes to the dirty/laundry side throughout the trip. Keeps things organized. We have two sizes of compression cubes, a couple Zip bags and the hanging toiletry bag.

For a 7 day family vacation to Aruba a couple of years ago I limited everyone to a carry-on suitcase and a backpack. That's it. Everyone was skeptical, especially my husband, yet I held firm. Everyone laid out their clothes for me. Everyone was skeptical. Everyone sat there watching me roll. Everyone was skeptical. Everyone was blown away that I managed to get everything packed. The kids now (18 and 21) still stand back and ask me to pack for them because they want me to use my magical powers to fit all their stuff. Now, I'm a combination of rolling and compression cubes.

I have tried rolling clothes and don't find it saves any space, it also increases wrinkles. I will stick with folding and packing cubes! I do a mix of fold and roll depending the clothing piece. Semi konmari method at times.
@CruisingEngineer
@CruisingEngineer Год назад
I primarily use the rolling method (love the Ranger roll) for tops, knit fabric dresses, shorts, etc., and compression cubes. I super tight roll using the hotdog fold, fold in the sleeves, place the neck of the top closest to me and place my heels on the bottom edge then pull and roll tightly (22 yrs in the Army taught me well.) Jeans and slacks are folded and compression cubed. Underwear and socks are stuffed into shoes and the void where the handle depressions are located. 14 nights on a cruise with only a carry-on and personal bag. It can be done with good planning! (wife of a DFW pilot).
@TravelTipsbyLaurie
@TravelTipsbyLaurie Год назад
Way to go! 14 nights...I do not know if I could pack for that many. Did you do laundry??
@CruisingEngineer
@CruisingEngineer Год назад
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Yes, because Disney has laundry facilities (Parks and cruise ships). I do laundry on day 5, day 10, and day14 in the morning: load the washers, do my morning run, shower/get dressed, put wash into dryers (the app lets me know it's done), grab coffee for my husband while he's getting ready, fold clothes, put them away, and we're ready for breakfast. I hate carrying dirty clothes flying home (hence washing the last full day on the ship). Cruising in warm climates is the easiest to pack (as you well know), and the 14 night cruise was Panama Canal. If it's a 7 night cruise: laundry on days 4 and 7.

I always try to do laundry on the last full day as well (though I usually do it at night once I'm in my pjs so that I can put that day's clothes in the load) - so nice not having to pack a bunch of dirty clothes, because it also means I don't have to do a load when I get home (when your last flight home (multiple flights required for me b/c my home airport only flies to one other airport) arrives at 10 p.m. or later, and the airport is a 40-minute drive from home, it's really nice to not have to do laundry that night or the next day) or let my suitcase air out for a day or two before putting it away (I can't do artificial fragrances, so dryer sheets are out). And absolutely *_YES!!_* to 14 nights with just carryon - done it twice in warm weather when I didn't have access (it was too expensive) to laundry facilities (just washed some things by hand in the sink every night or two using the hotel shampoo), twice where I did have access, and several more that were longer (up to 4 1/2 weeks, with most being 3 1/2 weeks) and had access, including last Christmas (still don't know how I managed 4 1/2 weeks in the middle of winter with just carryon - didn't spend a ton of time outside, though - but I'm slightly modifying my last Christmas's packing list for this year, so we'll see); hard to believe I'm leaving in only a week and a half, and I still don't know whether I'm flying or driving 🤪(will hopefully figure that out tomorrow - I booked flights a couple weeks ago just in case, back when the prices were _slightly_ more reasonable than they are now) - so I have no choice but to make everything fit into carryon, even though I'll be gone for 4 1/2 weeks again; may have to send a tote bag (will only have in it stuff that needs repair/altering, and that's the sole reason they're going) with a friend who's driving if I end up having to fly.

It's also less likely to be embarrassing if TSA has to do a bag check (I even roll my underwear and put them in my smallest cube, an eBags small slim, which is slightly smaller than an Eagle Creek XS, because the last time they had to check my suitcase and they weren't in a cube, they were sitting right on top of everything - clean, of course, because it was the beginning of a trip, but still a bit embarrassing), and easier for them, too, since they don't have to dig through things, they can just pull out and open only the one they need.

For winter I use the ranger roll method. Then put them in a packing cube. This method takes longer, but it works for me. My husband made a rolling board for me. It has clips on the top to help keep tension as I’m rolling. They are a lot more uniform and go into the packing cubes better. The skinny oblong cubes are great for socks, underwear, bras and sleep shirts. Before I found your videos and started using pouches, I would put all non-liquid bathroom essentials in the oblong cube.

The hubs loves to take jeans everywhere… the turning point was how many. He is tall and size 34. Shoes are another sticky point. I told him if he took more than two, (and one of the two he was wearing on travel day) he was packing his own suitcase. So he tried the carryon, nope, then the 24 inch- yes. But now he had to check it in… bummer 😂 Well, lesson learned, now he always chooses what to take and never more than two jeans. I am the better packer since I traveled for business every week for years so I pack for him once he has everything out and ready. The only time jeans are not traveling is winter in Canada. Fleece lined, waterproof pants are the ticket (and only two 😊).

If I need to pack quite a bit of clothes and other items as I will be next month for a missions trip, I told and roll. It just depends what the clothing item is and where it'll fit best. For my pants, I usually lay them flat, fold lengthwise 1/3 (waist/outer edge of leg to mid section), repeat in other side, then fold upwards or downwards accordingly to the space it'll go into. Pants usually fold up pretty small doing it that way

I first put my pants on the bottom folded at the knees. How I lay them out is the key. I put them from one side to the other lapping the. Not stacking them. I alternate the waist end by changing the direction on how they go in. then I put a couple of pull over sweaters as flat as posable neck opening at opposite ends. How I fold for my dresses. I fold them length wise bringing one side to the middle then do the same with the other side. Fold at waist then start with wide roles about 4 to five times for a mid calf length dress. It lays flatter this way and I can get 7 dresses and 2 light sweaters in one packing cube. I do the same for my tops. Both of these cubes fit perfectly on top of 5 pr. of jeans. My short sets are folded like the dresses. I get 5 sets in one cube. That goes in the center of the lid I have plenty of room for curling Iron and 3 pr. of shoes. We are going on a 29 day trip 2024. Flying to London. The last 2 weeks of out trip is going to be on a trans Atlantic To FL. I needed to figure out how much I could bring. So I kind of fold and flat role.

Thank you for addressing underwear and socks. I always wonder what people do in these videos. We often have trips where we will be spending one night on the way to a location. I always make sure I pack the items I will need for that stop together. That way I don’t have to disturb anything.

THIS!! ^^ I live 1,000 miles from my parents, and I grew up 1,000 miles from my grandparents, so overnight stops on the way there and back are normal for us, so we always each pack an overnight bag so that we don't have to drag out the suitcases.

I usually roll my clothes but the most difficult to deal with is jeans. I don't travel with business\business casual clothes but rather jeans. Usually 2 to 3 pair. But they take up so much space. Tips on packing jeans?

Hi did you see the part where I talked about draping them? My tip is to pack only one. Other trousers can be packed in another fabric and then wear jeans on the airplane.

Thank you for you helpful ideas. You mentioned that your mother took her CPap. We are traveling and I need to take mine. Does that case really need to be inside the carryon or personal bag? It will take way too much room. TSA just referred me to their website and it actually says “When traveling with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine (CPAP) or Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure machine (BiPAP) in your carry-on bag, please place it in a separate bin for x-ray screening” Hmmmm

Hi Jane. Thankfully they do not count as a bag. Yes put it in a gray bin though. Some people buy a J-hook to attach it while walking.

Packing cubes, stuffed not rolled or folded.

I thought you were going to roll and fold the same items, then compare how much room was left in the carry on.

Hi I did show the rolled clothes. Ooh I forgot to show the picture of how the folded clothes looked. Ugh I completely forgot-they we’re folded but still beside the suitcase. I do though pack the folded clothes in compression cubes.

I spent August in Scotland with just a small carry-on bag and a backpack. I did check the carry-on because I have arthritis and handling the bag on the plane is just too much. That said, the tip I have for older people is that your cane is considered durable medical equipment and is not counted as part of your carry-on luggage. I have a full length umbrella that I attached to my cane, which allows me to not have to worry about having it put on as part of my carry-on luggage. On my trip I use rolling for Bucky and folding for less bulky. I also used compression for both. I had to pack for three different types of weather, hot (Maryland), warm (Edinburgh and vicinity) and very cool (north of Inverness). By being very careful, I was able to get by with just those two pieces of luggage. Having my extra large bubble umbrella was very handy. I, too, live in Houston. It’s a great place.

I tried the rolling method but it's not for me. I fold and use packing cubes. 😊

I fold everything and wrap it in tissue paper. No wrinkles. I stack loosely in a tote bag. Never used a packing cube. I never owned a backpack or a wheeled suitcase. It is embarrassing how old school I am!!
