Wil tests and reviews the 2019 Merida One-Twenty 8000 - a zippy, fun-loving trail bike.
Following a 2.5 year gestation period, the Merida One-Twenty arrives on the scene as a brand spanking new trail bike for 2019. Following in the footsteps of the longer travel One-Forty and One-Sixty, the new One-Twenty transitions to a trunnion-mounted rear shock, along with an all-new frame dressed in a contemporary parts package.
As the speedy trail bike of the range, the One-Twenty is equipped with 120mm of rear suspension travel, a 130mm travel fork and 29in wheels. Its geometry has been massaged for 2019, bringing it up to speed alongside competitors such as the Scott Spark, Specialized Stumpjumper ST, and Giant Trance 29.
Globally, there are eight different models available within the One-Twenty range. Pricing starts at an attractive £,1400 / $1,999 AUD for the entry-level One-Twenty 400.
Geometry and the suspension design is mimicked throughout the line, though cheaper models use an alloy frameset, with pricier models getting either a hybrid carbon/alloy or full-carbon frameset.
Sizes range from Small through to X-Large, and select models can also be had with 27.5in wheels in the Small and Medium sizes.
For the past three months, Wil has been testing this model; the One-Twenty 8000, which sits one rung down from the top-tier 9000.

I have the 600 model, and have not had a single issue with the Forkaster in 600km or trails, running 28PSI with a tube and just swapped to tubless at 24psi.

Great review Wil. Out of interest I've seen some reviews complain of a flat stem and low rise handlebars, which create a low front end and can feel like it pitches the rider forward on descents. Did you not notice anything like that? It's interesting that didn't seem to be a problem for you.

Great review Will, so much info but all of it so relevant and well presented. In fact, I went to buy one but they are out of stock of L and I was told the 2020 variant is now available. The 2020 One twenty 8000 looks a part step up from the 2019 (and 1.5k AUD more expensive) and the 7000 has the new Shimano XT gear throughout. I bought the 2020 7000 and it should be available early / mid July.

Merida One Twenty VS Giant Trance !? If it was your own money, which one would you choose for a soft trail bike?

Can you give direct comparison between this bike and Canyon Neuron. Also not sure if you have experience with their AL models
@singletrack
@singletrack 5 лет назад
Hey there Georgi! The full review of the Merida One-Twenty will be going live on the singletrackworld.com website on Monday. In that review, I've made a few comparisons with the Canyon Neuron, as well as some of the other trail bikes I've ridden lately. So it'll be worth checking that out for all the details. To summarise for you, I'd say the Merida is more lively and fun to ride. The suspension is more supple and sensitive off-the-top, and it feels more usable throughout the full 120mm of travel. The Canyon probably pedals a touch more efficiently, and it's a little more stable through the mid-stroke, but aside from that I preferred the active suspension feel of the Merida. Because of the supple suspension package (including the Pike fork) along with the shorter chainstay length and ever-so-slighty slacker head tube angle, the Merida is poppier and more involving to ride, particularly on the descents. I really enjoyed testing this one - it's a cracking all-round trail bike! [ST Wil]

Hey Will. Going from a hardtail XC bike looking for full suss short travel still fast but trail friendly would you choose the 120 or Trance? Or what about the new Top Fuel 9.8. Regards Will . Loving all your reviews. Cheers.
@singletrack
@singletrack 5 лет назад
Yo Darren! Cheers for watching and for your question - that's a good one for sure. If your riding is more on the XC tip, then I'd have to recommend the Merida One-Twenty. It's a fast, agile and really engaging short-travel trail bike that also pedals really well. It's geometry isn't as radical as the Giant Trance 29, so it doesn't have the same kind of straight-line descending toughness about it, but it climbs better and it's a more lively bike everywhere else. I've not ridden the new Top Fuel, but that also looks like a great option for sure! [ST Wil]

Singletrack Magazine wow thanks for super quick reply Will. One more question please. I am 5’7 (170)and always borderline small medium my inside leg is 31” any advice on Merida size wise. Cheers.
@singletrack
@singletrack 5 лет назад
@@darrenmorley7453 - Hmm, that's a trickier question, as you're definitely on the edge between sizes. For comparison, my inseam is 81cm (31.9in), so my legs are only a bit longer than yours. My BB-to-saddle height is around 70cm, and even with the 150mm dropper post on the Merida One-Twenty, there's still a bit of room to play with. Depending on your BB-to-saddle height, you might still be ok with the Medium frame. My concern with you going to the Small size is that it might feel a little bit short in the top tube length. While I like the fit of the bike, it isn't a super long bike. As always, your best bet is to swing a leg over both sizes if possible, or at least one of them to get a feel for how the bike fits your body. Hope that helps! [ST Wil]

Hey Will good morning. Is the Whyte S120 a good XC/Trail bike easy to climb etc more so than the Merida 8000. The reason I ask since last messaged you I’m not sure the 8000 is available here☹️ cheers.

Looks like the rear suspension is a FAUX BAR ??? not a HORST LINK - below the rear axle ???
@singletrack
@singletrack 5 лет назад
Correct - it's a single pivot suspension design, with a link driven shock - also known as a 'Faux Bar'. [ST Wil]

Very good question! If it were my own money, I'd likely go for the Merdia - they're priced so aggressively in Australia, and the build quality is top-notch. The Whyte S-120 is a cracking bike, but there are holes in the spec for the RS model, which lower the overall value. Speaking of the S-120, I'll have the full review going up on the Singletrackworld.com website in the next week or so - keep your eyes peeled! [ST Wil]

So essentially, it's Trek's full float design no?
@singletrack
@singletrack 5 лет назад
Not quite - the Float Link and Full Floater concept is the same, where the shock 'floats' between the upper rocker link, and an extension of the chainstay. However, the Trek suspension design places the most rearward pivot around the rear axle (called ABP - Active Braking Pivot). The Merida design puts the most rearward pivot along the seatstay, just above the rear axle. This makes it a true single pivot design. In comparison, I've found Trek's design to offer a plusher and more active feel - regardless of whether you're pedalling or on the brakes. It has great traction and a really smooth response. The Merida is snappier and more responsive under pedalling - it feels like there's more anti-squat built into the kinematics, and the rigid one-piece chainstays are stiff and stout, with good power transfer from the pedals to the rear wheel. I tend to notice it in the corners too, where the bike kinda springs out of the exit a little more too. Hope that helps explain! [ST Wil]

@singletrack
@singletrack 5 лет назад
Why not? That's a genuine question by the way :-) [ST Wil]
@smuy3782
@smuy3782 5 лет назад
I prefer the feel of a single pivot over anything that has an obvious pedaling platform. I recon it ramps up smoothly through the stroke. Plus with less links it can be built stiffer and stronger. But probably the main reason is who they wanted to pay their royalties to and how much they were asking. Any of the main rear suspension designs can be made to behave any way you like these days with CAD and modern shocks. So it's really just up to the designers as to where they want to tune the strengths and compromises to be.
@trailtalkmtb6603
@trailtalkmtb6603 5 лет назад
I've tried a few single pivots and float link bike stand out a bike from the rest (except high single pivots they're on a different level). They dont have much brake jack, they actually feel pretty active under braking. Supple, supportive and as Wil said the ramp up is very gradual.
@dwhyte3392

Singletrack Magazine not a fan personally and I just don’t see why they’re used over a 4 bar setup, which pedal noticeably better in my opinion.
