Masking fluid is probably one of the scariest art supplies. One wrong move and your entire illustration... everything you've worked on... gets ripped up. OH NO. Well that's what I'm here for! WOW, How incredibly thorough! The only thing that I can think of that is missing is how they perform if you don't remove the mask for 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, etc. Maybe a test of applying it to wet or damp paper. Good Job !!

The second test, the applicator one, it seems that the watercolour wasn’t completely dried already. And I think that is a huge factor in them ripping the paper on the bottom.

Since there’s so many shades of the masking fluid, you should totally have a challenge to paint something using only the masking fluid

Tip: when doing the splatter, cut out a square from a piece of paper to make a shield, hold a finger or another brush handle perpendicular from your brush/applicator, and tap the brush against your finger like a wand.

I believe the pens are for typography type projects and more to do with lines and written text under paint

I think maybe the two with needle applicators are meant for doing very fine lines, so they need to have more grip and probably wouldn't tear up the paper when peeling. But that means that when they're put thickly on a large area they have *too much* grip and give bad results. I'd like to see how those two work when using them to mask in really thin lines.

Great video. Just a tip, never shake masking fluid if it doesn’t state so on the bottle, it will coagulate and you will eventually end up with a ball of useless rubbery goopy in the bottle. Type of paper used can affect wether it is ripped too. I have used Winsor and Newton for years, always on cold and hot press paper and never had it rip once.

My nurse friends when they need to mix powder/liquid meds they actually roll it in between their hands vigorously. It gets mixed properly without too much bubbles.

I know that it doesn't really matter but liquid latex works pretty well slight ripping over watercolor, but other than that it works fair enough

I'm curious if the Winsor & Newton didnt work as well (aside from hot press) because it was left on the paper for while. directions indicate "Remove soon as dry". i got it recently but in my tests (cold press) i got no issues, thick or thin. But again i did not leave it on for an hour. Perhaps that might apply to the others?

The sennelier masking fluid does terrible, it ruined a couple of my works 😭 But their watercolors are awesome !! It’s a big brand here in France, they have a tiny store in Paris that looks like Ollie Vander’s shop and the paints are made with honey ! :D

Exactly. I have that one and it's just so bad. It's crap. I bought it bc it was the one they had available in a store I ordered from and it was always really bad. Now couple years after buying I used it and turns out it has gone bad or something! How is this possible it ruined my watercolor. It just doesn't come out, it's all sticky. It really did ruin my painting. And that led me to this video to find a new masking fluid.

OH MY GOD So I have only used the Sennelier applicator masking fluid, and I thought that I was just terrible with it/hated masking fluid. I should definitely give it another go with a different brand.

in my watercolor class at uni, we're using the pebeo drawing gum as our masking fluid and my classmate's painting she worked on for 4 hours was destroyed by the drawing gum. it bled her colors and ripped up huge sections of paper. she was in tears for like 20 minutes and had to go home.

I love these videos of you testing out art supplies to see which one works the best. They remind me a lot of simplynaillogical's videos on which one's the best black/white nail polish. I'm a guy and I don't have long nails so her videos don't really help me but I'm into art so your videos help me a lot! I also just thought about buying masking fluid so thanks!

Utrecht is a Blick brand. I used to go to Utrecht art store in Ohio, but I think Blick bought the stores at some point. Oh, and thanks for the video!! I bought some masking fluid a while back but it looks scary so I haven't used it yet, lol.

Just to let y'all know; many masking fluids (from my very limited knowledge) contain latex, so be careful or avoid them if you have a latex allergy. I found out the very hard way please take care of yourselves.

I wish you had done a test for lines of masking fluid, I've found that sometimes the paint leaks under the fluid if the masking fluid is applied in thin lines. The sennelier and fineline ones might have done better on a thin line test as I imagine the formula is designed for thin/fine work. This was a really useful video, thank you.

This is really helpful. I had a bottle of Sennelier's masking fluid and, based on reviews online, I thought that mine might had gone off, seeing how people thought it was fantastic while mine acted just as yours did - ripping paper like there was no tomorrow. I've started using jackson's, and it's sooo much better. Thanks for taking the time to review these!

I use the Molotow pen. I just take it off with an eraser. But I only use cold press paper. So maybe that's why I don't have any problems with it.

Hey guys! I've worked with watercolor before, and I think I can suggest a good alternative for masking fluid! Ya ready? It's called *rubber cement* . I actually preferred it to the other masking fluid I used in my classes in college. This stuff WORKS. And if you're broke, like me, I found it at Target for 1.99! I'm not telling you what to use (let the Golden Ant Art Goddess bask you with her glory and knowledge of such mighty subjects, all hail Kasey) but I just thought I'd pop in and share a tip that both saved me money and many an art piece. *THIS HAS BEEN A RANSOM REVIEWS WITH RYLAN*

Also a good product: photo album glue. Removed well with kneaded eraser/that sticky stuff you can use to hang posters up on walls and stuff like that.

I recommend watching the full video. But here’s the ones she’s decided on with prices! Since prices weren’t mentioned after the introduction of it Bottled Masking Fluids the ant queen likes most. Cheapest to most expensive Andrew Jeri 5.50 Schmincke 6.39 Grumbacher 7.43 QoR 7.69 Urecht 8.09 Applicator Masking fluids Schmincke 10.93 Pen applicators Neither would recommend but pébéo over molotow Pébéo 6.50 Molotow 10.08

The Fineline is my go-to for my classes and for my own work. You just really have to make sure that the paper is completely dry after a wash. The longer it sits the easier it comes up. You can also use makeup liquid latex. It's basically all the same

I know this is just a joke but, From her experience you only know that the Opus Cold Pressed Watercolor paper (that's what she was using) performs very well with masking fluid in general. So you can't really assume that any other cold pressed paper works the same for sure.
