I switched to throwing the three finger grip a couple years ago after using the stacked grip (unintensionally as it was the only way I could seem to get two fingers near the rim). I can't do the normal two finger because my hands are too small to get my thumb placement correct on top of the disc. I definitely support the three dinger grip for smaller handed players.

STRONGLY disagree. I have used the so-called "beginner grip" for 47 years. It is true that it does not have the power of the 2-finger grip. When I throw off or huck forehand I use the 2-finger for its greater distance. However, almost all of my throws in ultimate are less than 30 meters, and for that distance the split-finger has quite sufficient power. It also has another strong benefit: it is natural to throw it from far out. Most people throwing the power grip plant their elbow at their waist, losing a foot or more of reach. Because the split-finger supports the disc it is easier to reach out to throw around a mark. In summary, the power grip certainly goes farther, so using distance as the criterion kind of predetermines the result. For 90% of my ultimate throws, 30 meter or less forehands against a mark, the split finger is a better choice. As a coach, I introduce beginners to both and tell them to do whichever they feel more comfortable with. The difference is not that great (in 47 years playing I have never damaged the tendon of my middle finger), I would not tell someone to switch from the power grip.
