The mystery damage is from leaf miners. They are fly like creatures in adults stage but larvae really love lettice daisies and aquilegia. Have never before attacked my sweet peas.

Thanks for the info. ah, they are a pest! and persistent! I think if you can remove the eggs or stop them laying eggs in the first places it would help. But easier said than done! 😣
@debralugar8540

Isn't it funny that the control plant had no damage! Had to grin. I have used oyster shell as mulch in my herb garden since I was told not to use mulch because it's too damp. The copper mesh is a great idea if you are growing in pots but I can see laying it around plants too. The funny designs in some leaves are caused by leaf miners. The only way to get rid of them is to use a systemic pesticide which you cannot use on edibles. The only other way I can think of is to put a cover over them so the tiny moths can't get through. Chicken grit is really crushed granite. I have bought it with that label and they are the same things. I love this experiment! Thank you! I am always looking for something new to try.

I know right! How strange the control wasn't eaten. And thanking you for adentifing the leaf miners, much appreciated. Now another thing to deter 🤣🤪 oh the garden really is the gift that keeps giving 😀 😄
@OsirusHandle
@OsirusHandle 10 месяцев назад
there are no soil drench systemics legal rn i think but leaf systemics can be used on edibles provided you dont eat the bit you spray it on. your spray them on and they dont move around in the plant. you are also supposed to do it at least several months before eating fruit or whatever too.

Enjoyed your video and interesting results. I'm using organic slug gone in my pot's and they don't like it. I use slug traps in the garden beds with a homemade slug bait. Get a jar and add one cup of water, one tablespoon of sugar, dry yeast and flour then mix it in the jar and add to your slug trap's.

Haha oh Chico 😂🙈🐶.....my pal put Vaseline on the stems of her sunflowers, they got devoured! The egg shells maybe need to be a bit chunkier, rather than finely ground. I’ve been SO lucky with slugs this year. Did a major Nematodes drench at beginning of season , and had hardly any damage ( unlike last year!) Have a great week Deborah x
@Moggybox
@Moggybox 3 года назад
Oh there's never a dull moment 😂 I did give nematodes a bash at the start of the year in the raised beds and I think they really helped, although have noticed the little blighters are back! will have to get more ordered. Glad to hear you've had a good year and minor damage ❤🎉 Thank you, you too 😀

We keep a bird in our house, so oyster shells are no problem. Since it was also the one that did the best, I'm thinking that the calcium input was beneficial to the plant too. Great experiment! -LadyMiss Suz

Use Egg shells in combination with Tape is the best bet. The slugs and snails are able to climb up that black frame. You have provided a Ladder for them. That needs copper tape on it too.

Fab experiment. This year iv3 tried garlic spray. The only downside is you have to top up after the rain. And being Scotland you'd have to spray often. A few flying bugs that can be taking bits of leaf for their wee houses.

Great video Deborah and I was wondering where you got the egg shells from since you have previously mentioned that you are vegan (vegans don't eat eggs but I won't be using them because they are not effective as well as not being vegan) I would use the copper tape or copper mesh and I don't know if an actual mint plant or garlic grown next to the peas would work.
@Moggybox
@Moggybox 3 года назад
Totally agree, glad I've tried them, but they didn't work for me so I won't use them again, although I think the calcium is good for the plants. I'm vegan, but the dogs are not, so I make them rice and eggs, and save the shells. Waste not want not and all, but might have to try companion planting next time and see if that helps. 😄

You can use water bottles big enough to cover the whole plant pot to deter pests it'll also act as a mini greenhouse which promotes foliage growth 😉

@@Moggybox it’s tough as the cause (parent bugs) will keep coming back to plants they like. I try to limit the breeding damage by removing damaged, deformed and stuck together leaves in order to storm larvae reaching adulthood. Nearly all resources say use an organic insecticide but I try to be chemical free.

No need to kill. Use strong espresso coffee powder...5/5 or 8/10 which ever you can buy and not weaker coffee bean powder. That is the strength that no slug likes.

Clearly this experiment has not only proven that eggshells do not deter slugs, but they might even see it as a condiment! All the "gardeners" recommending eggshells to deter snails are probably just secretly snails in disguise.
