Isopods are some of the best pet invertebrates, but fungus gnats can be a nuisance in isopod enclosures. In this video I try out a fungus gnat trap. After three days of using it, it appears to be quite effective in reducing fungus gnat pests in isopod enclosures.
Here is a link to the Kathy Auto Magic Fungus gnat trap. It also works for other pest insects, such as fruit flies and mosquitoes!

Thanks for sharing! Fungus gnats are basically the only insect that I automatically smash on sight once a larger popilation of them has conditioned me to do so. Although I find them kind of mean I also resort to yellow sticky traps. I wonder keeping stocked with those official sticky circles for the device might cause it to be expensive in the long run, kinda like with printers where the ink cartridges cost more than the printer itself. Perhaps this part could also be DIYed if needed?
@Aquarimax

Hey Rus. I have a question about death feigning beetle larvae. In addition to their death feigning do they ever exude foul tasting liquid to deter predators? I ask because as I was sifting through substrate to count and measure my larvae I found one exuding liquid just under its 3rd pair of legs. I was very careful so I’m not sure if I injured it somehow. I was going to quarantine it but it escaped back into the substrate when I was away for a few minutes! I have 12 and the 2 largest are about 1.5” feigning and a bit long when active so I am going to be incubating those 2 soon! Also I have taken to calling them feignworms, (similar to T. Molitor mealworms) what do you think about helping me coin the term? Thanks for all your awesome videos. You are a great resource to the pet community!
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 года назад
I love that name, maybe I can help it catch on! I have noticed them releasing that liquid when disturbed....it doesn’t seem a result of injury, just disturbance. I haven’t noticed an odor associated with the liquid, and haven’t tasted it, but I assume it is a type of repugnatorial fluid..it sounds like you are very close to some pupae, I wish you success!!

Funny you say this. This is how I was able to feed my toads for a while when first on lockdown. Except used a uv light to attract a bunch of beetles and other flying insects to my back patio. Then, I used regular yellow stick pad to catch fruit flies and gnats to feed my jumping spiderlings. I ended up just making banana trap after it got to be too much work trying not to squish the tiny flies with my tweezers when plucking em off the pad.lol still worked. Just a lot of work.lol

You could, don’t use the sticky trap, drill a hole in the bottom tray that mates with a hole on the tank.

I’m curious to know what effect BTI would have on your cultures. It has been working for me in my plants but I’d imagine the moisture levels are complicatedly different from plant soil as it’s likely less moist but consistently moist. Can springtails aide in this battle?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 года назад
I have some concerns that BTI might have long-term negative effects...I read a study on that...but springtails definitely help!
@deadfred821
@deadfred821 3 года назад
@@Aquarimax My concern is that while isopods are crustaceans, they fall victim to many of the same ills that effect insects (which are also invertebrates along with other arthropods like arachnids). I don’t have any isopod cultures, but would have fear & concern using such a product. I would, however, consider adding them to an established pot that contains the BTI in the substrate or received water that contains BTI. The question at that point is how does one check on that cultures health without completely dismantling the substrate of the pot?🤷🏾‍♂️
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 года назад
@@deadfred821 i have read a couple of peer/reviewed journal articles on BTI, and ne specifically on short-term effects on isopods. It does not seem to affect them as it does larval from nous gnats, fortunately. However, another scientific article stated that use of BTI in natural environments resulted in impoverishment of the invertebrate fauna of the area...and the worst part is that this impoverishment was only apparent to n the second year of the study!
@deadfred821
@deadfred821 3 года назад
@@Aquarimax The second year!?😱 Jeez… all the more certain to make me not want to use it outdoors. I hear it doesn’t effect fish & that people use it in ponds for mosquito control; now i feel like i need to look further into this…😓

Do gnats get blown out or escape through the holes in the side of trap? I wouldn't want to be counting sticky pads & ordering them. Will it hold gnats down at bottom from fan pressure without pads and they would dry out & die ? I would probably try wrapping the bottom part of the unit with pantyhoes so as to make the holes escape proof and not need sticky pads. The bugs will dry out and die if the fan blows on them long enough. The part i don't know is, how much the pantyhoes will slow down air flow and not be enough to pull fruit fly's in, or maybe put strain on fan motor bearing.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 года назад
Judging by the number of gnats trapped, I doubt many escape. In order to save money on the sticky pads, I order the MUCH cheaper rectangular yellow, double-sided sticky pads and cut them to fit. I share your concerns about the fan bearing if the mesh were covered with hose.
