Earth Electrode testing using the TIS MFT Pro Plus. Covering the Ra and Ze (Zdb) methods. This is the first in a new series and focuses on a single earth electrode directly into soil.
An overview of how the placement of both the current and voltage spikes is critical for accurate values of Ra.
I also discuss over lapping PME connections and the implications that can have for both EV and Hot Tubs/Swimming Pools.....
Plus some key extra information the TIS systems brings to us that other instruments do not. Next up in the series some rods in bentonite and perhaps the current clamp method!

This is a fantastic explanation of earth electrodes and TT young man. Quite a few electricians have no understanding of comparing Ra Ze and cross connected earthing zones. Specialist equipment helps but what you described and understanding the numbers shows easy ways to spot it. I read a terrible article in PE not long ago who basically surmised to use an earth electrode. Dangerous false sense of security was surprised PE allowed it to be published.

Thanks mate. I am not one to critise others . Some people get a lot out of writing articles qudos to them. I do love making videos like this though. Learn a lot myself in doing so.

Very interesting video, that TIS Pro+ looks to have some very good functionality built into it for earth testing.

Hi Mark, This is interesting stuff, I liked your explanation of things. I look forward to when you do the testing on the ConduDisc and how the results will be better. Will you consider doing a test with ConduFlow? Also congratulations on your eFIXX award.

Thanks Sergio. I think we should test as many electrode systems as possible! I just need to sneak them in while gardening 🤭.

Very interesting, I have never had to do earth rod testing. Mark can tell me on a TNC - S earthing arrangement were the main earth go’s back to the transformer, why are the IET now saying that we need an earth rod as well? I don’t se the logic . Or am I just thick . I take it that is your house , great shed but sorry mate you have let me down 😂 no insulation caps on the spare bus bar pegs, naughty boy Brilliant video as always mate 👍👍👍❤️

Hi Sean, Its a step towards earth foundations mate. It doesnt make a huge amount of sense tbh as getting low enough values will be hard and in urban areas have little benefit imo

Hi Mark, great video BTW. With regards to DNO not restoring TNS after faults etc. I agree nowadays to assume TN-C-S supply especially for EVCP etc. However when we test ZE as per any visit to a property. We are going to have quite a few readings above 0.35 Ohms. Even if definately TNS incoming at cut out. Could still be TNCS less than 10 mtr away. We don't know, question is, "Do we report high impedance to the DNO? Or Not?" It's a riddle 🙂

Hello, thanks for your videos - thinking of getting TIS pro +. However, I can’t find any videos and little information about how it connects to my PC. How does it transfer data, is their software good and how can it be use to get data from the field to my certificates? If you could do a video on this or point me in the direction of one? Thanks so much 😎👍

Hi Matt, I will have a look. Not used it to be honest as we enter data on ipads as we go. Will report back soon. Mark

can i ask what is probably a very basic question... why is there a difference between the resistance of the supply electrode at a max of 21 ohms and the consumer's electrode having a max of 200 ohms before it becomes unstable?

Hi mate, the DNO is more concerned about fault currents and touch voltages in the network. Sizing conductors and parrallel paths to mitigate them. On our side we just need a reliable enough impedance for our rcds to work for both fault and additional protection. Technically that could be a much higher value than 200 ohms but that is what is considered reliable in terms of variation due to weather and ground conditions. Thanks for watching and joining in the chat!
