Ann Reardon's popcorns weren't rounded like this one, perhaps the amount of pressure can yield different results. The beauty of the popper is a bit lost on popcorn, which will pop on its own. The fun is in the grains that will only pop if heated under pressure like this, like wheat. Saw this all the time in Seoul in the late 1990s while there, but like @FrenchGuyCooking said, they're huge and go off like a cannon. Saw a mother and child walk too close to one once, not paying attention to the operator's whistle blast warning of the imminent pressure release. She yelled at the old guy like he'd tried to kill her child.

@dutchdykefinger
@dutchdykefinger Год назад
in all fairness, many of them probably have safety standards that could make them double as one when you use it alternatively, the term hacking for using something functionally in a different way than its intended use existed long before home computers were a thing. when you're in the torture business, you may similarly find some hacking (pun intended) here and there kitchen appliance and torture device isn't a truly mutually exclusive category, could be both, sure, they're probably sold and advertised as kitchen appliances, but that's just a label they stick on it man, whichever target audience sells the most product, money makes the world go round, and observations seem to indicate that on average, people appear to engage more in the activity of cooking and preparing food, than they do in the activity of torturing people, it is what it is. but if we're going to get worked up about the intended use of devices, you'll find that very little things are in fact torture devices, when you think outside of that restrictive paradigm.... you will find that many, many things are torture devices in function, the possibilities are limitless. gotta think outside the box when you don't want to put them inside of a box right away, and play with them a bit first. if you're going to just indisciminately butcher and phone it in with little to no regard or respect for the process, you may as well let the machines take over, as there's no pride left in your work, instruments like these are.. instrumental in the true craftsman torture business

It's amazing for people who do home food preservation. If you are processing a hundred pounds of apples to put up for the winter or other foods that would typically be peeled before being cooked and canned, this looks like it would be immensely useful and definitely worth the real estate. The cons in having it is that our neighbors almost call a police on us thinking we shot someone and another one is that bcz they finally know we have that maker, whenever we make pop rice, they also have their shares HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

It was one of those 'as seen on tv' gadgets and widely available on the market(stall) for about fl.7.50/10. You know how popular they were because they've been turning up in thriftstores for a while now. For 2/3 euros (Because the people who had these are leaving their house now...) they still work, better than anything electric now. And the spriralizer is absolutely 'AMAZING' 😉. I mean, its a piece of plastic that cuts through carrots and potatoes and stays sharp! And in the decade of the buffets that thing was gold! Saved so much time. And yes, HTCT also tested the popcornmaker and it was great to see you do it too. Hey Jamie! You loved your bbq gloves so much! Well, this is another way to use them!

My favourites are where it's being used in situ - people popping vast amounts of corn in much larger versions of this at side-of-the-road stalls. My understanding is that the popcorn is round because they used mushroom popcorn. When it's done with butterfly popcorn, it's the usual irregular shape. The Mythbuster team (I can't remember what they're called on RU-vid) did not get the rounded popcorn. Partly, they didn't reach pressure quickly but they also did not use the rounded corn kernels.

In America we have room to store our gadgets, that is why we have so many. I have a janky apple peeler that is used to process apples and pears, having the one in this episode would make my life so much easier every fall as it looks like it works much more efficiently than the one I have. Anyone who cans or makes pies for freezing would be lucky to have the one in this episode.

The "popcorn maker" is not actually a popcorn maker, it's a "puffer". If you've ever had puffed rice or other grain, (including popcorn) it was made this way. Think breakfast cereal, not movie popcorn.

For the apple peeler, as someone who has done agrarian living history interpretation, you have to think about a 19th century American farm. They probably have a few apple trees. They probably get several bushels of apples per year. Of course, not all of these can be eaten fresh. In 1897 families would have probably been drying a lot of apple slices as well as making cider, apple butter, applesauce, and probably canned apple pie fillings as well. Home canning was really beginning to hit it’s stride with several companies making jars and lids to use at home. In most of those applications the peel isn’t wanted. Set up one of the young’uns with that device there and you can have a barrel of apples peeled for you needs in no time! A lot of American homesteaders today actually use a similar device that can peel the apple, core it, and slice it into rings all at once. And the apple peels and cores aren’t wasted. Pigs and chickens love them!

I lust for that apple peeler.... And just as a historical observation, I doubt it was intended for a restaurant environment....but rather as a *farmhouse* implement, when one's home apple orchard of several dozen trees all came ripe at roughly the same time and were ready to be preserved. While you can just crush and press the whole apples for cider making, most other forms of apple preservation such as canning apple sauce, apple butter, apple jelly and apple pie filling, or drying slices of apples really call for peeling the fruit. As well, doing the peels as long continuous slices allow you to hand them for drying as well, since apples peels are great sources of pectin. Pectin is used to thicken jams and jellies, especially for fruit not as well-equipped with pectin, like apricots, cherries, figs, strawberries, or blueberries. When it's time to make jams and jellies with low pectin fruit, a couple of dried apple peels simmered for an hour with a bit of water will work near as well as modern store-bought pectin.

You all apparently haven't lived somewhere with like 3 or 4 apple trees in the back yard like many of us in the US have. By about the 12th apple you'd kill for one of these peelers! Plus it unhooks from the counter so it's not there except when you want it. Also most of the issues you had with the popcorn sound more like a variety of popcorn you didn't care for. Some are mushroom ish like this and some are more spread out, butterfly shaped I think they call it. Not all popcorn is equal!

One thing to remember with the apple peeler is that apples were very plentiful in the US by the late 1800s. In the late 1700s you could go out to the frontier of the US(at the time this was in the Midwest of the country like Ohio) and get 100 acres of land deeded to you if you created a "permanent homestead" part of which included growing at least 50 apple trees. So basically every family in the Midwest US had at least a 50 tree apple orchard. To facilitate the growing of these orchards there were people like John Chapman(Johnny Appleseed) who went around pre-planting these apple trees all over the place so that when the homesteaders moved in they already had a head start on getting the orchards going meaning they would be deeded the land sooner. This left even more apple trees around. It should also be noted that at the time apples weren't really used for eating; they were used to make cider which was very popular in the US at the time, and takes a ton of apples to make. Something like that peeler would save so much time back then.

The popcorn popper in the thumbnail is also used with other grains in China/Southeast Asia by street vendors who use much larger versions. You can find videos on youtube with street vendors using them to make huge amounts of puffed grains for sweet snacks. Its basically gun puffing, the same process used to make certain breakfast cereals

The apple peeler was part of canning fruits for year round use and for making apple-butter, the process of which could be done without removing the seeds but required the skin removed. Skins could be given to pigs, chickens. So this was actually a middling home item and NOT the commercial production version which would have been driven by a passing spline shaft. For an average family you'd need to be able to do the apples from about 30 trees in less than one day between the morning and evening milkings and the rest of the chores, this could be used successfully by a young and middle age child to do the entire day's cropping. You need the mechanical reliability without any skill other than placement to be able to have 3 and 4 year olds helping. One of the fastest peelers was actually a turn-table with the spikes on it and a pair of tongs with a mild spoon on one side and the peeler on the other which you used to push the apple on the turntable around with while tilting resulting in the peeling action then you could - without touching the peeled apple - take the apple off the wheel and bung it in the pot for cooking. Took hand-strength, skill, a little knowledge but it could do apples as fast as you liked. Like a driving rod on a steam engine. Y'all only did corn in the pressure kettle, why not quinoa?

I have to say the peeler. Although they do make some similar now, that one appears to be the original. I'm a bit proud that it came from my home state. I wasn't aware of it and surprised I didn't see one among my parent's antique collection. Sorted should get a hold of the newer version and compare them. I believe Pampered Chef or one of those companies sells them. It's great in Autumn for apple season. You can quickly peel them with less worry about them browning as fast and having to put lemon all over them.

The chinese popcorn maker isn't the traditional way to make popcorn. Corn is native to north America and popcorn has been eaten by native American peoples since prehistoric times. China only got corn and therefore popcorn after the Columbian exchange in the early 1500s. That machine may be the traditional way to pop other grains, but definitely not for corn.
