n this video, I took the advice of a subscriber in the security camera field, and purchased a couple of new cameras with better low light performance for snow melt night lapses. I also compare them against my already installed Ring Spotlight Camera, as well as a $30 Wyze camera I picked up on Amazon or fun (links below).
The cameras I will compare are:
Camera 4 - Ring Spotlight Camera Wired - amzn.to/3WQRKCO
Camera 3 - Reolink RLC-833A - amzn.to/3Y41dYz
Camera 2 - Wyze Cam v3 - amzn.to/3XL1Wyc
Camera 1 - Hikvision DS-2CD2387G2-LUS/SL - amzn.to/3X2dmwp
I also purchased and used the following items in this video:
TP-Link 4-Port POE Switch: amzn.to/3WO7J4P
CAT6 Ethernet Cables - amzn.to/3Y9nvs6
FLIR ONE Pro LT for iOS: amzn.to/3XNLKMm

Clearly camera 1 has the quality for detail, but, the Wyze really lit up the area and would work well for the driveway. Great explanation and comparison.

Hey Chris, I finally got a chance to watch the video. I recently disconnected all of my 720p Qsee cameras and I'm going to replace them with Hikvision ones. I debated going with Ubiquiti cameras since I use their network equipment, but the cost/quality of them vs the Hikvision isn't worth it.

Hey Bill! I've been really happy with this particular Hikvision camera. It's low light recording for my time lapse videos is night and day compared to the GoPro. I ended up using the Wyze cameras for general security and I've been happy with those as well, but they're not as easy to pull large files from like the Hikvision is. I usually need to go out and physically remove the SD Cards which is a pain. Call me anytime if you want to chat about them!

Almost a year late and useless comment but I've always pronounced it "hike-vision" but I'm gonna start using hickvision like you said because it's much funnier. I've been a CCTV/Alarm/Access Control tech for about 10 years now but I never ventured too far into home/prosumer level equipment so I loved the part about your side by side comparisons. I've got a mix of Avigilon/Amcrest/Hanwha(Wisenet/Panasonic/Sony)/Wyze/Verint/Axis/ACTi around the house and none of them are that great but placement and scene composition are very important for low light performance. A couple of IR Floods at the same wavelength at your camera's own IR LEDs can do a lot for unobtrusive nighttime lighting. Most of the cost of higher end models is only realized as reliability and survivability. Very impressed with your work on everything! Plumbing and electrical looks fantastic even from a commercial grading scale. P.S. Most of the consumer/prosumer level cameras are going to have a lot of hidden services phoning home so it might be a decent idea to put them on an isolated network, but that's much less viable if you're using the manufacturer's cloud services for any/all of them. As an example, I forgot to disable the P2P function on one of my amcrest cameras and it was the top blocked client on my network in 24 hours, 2nd place wasn't even close.

Ring is good tech . . .but serious issues with releasing video to law enforcement without a warrant, glad to see the Hikvision, hardwired, non web cam was the best, will be ordering a few of those wired to a NVR in my home, no way anyone can access without a warrant

Local storage is a huge benefit of those IP cameras. I think a combination of the Hikvisions, Wyze and Ring Doorbells will serve me well.

I run 8 Wyze v3's and 4 v2's. Can't wait to try the new Pan v3 and the OG/Telephoto stack. The v2's are just "filler" coverage, where I can get them up close and don't need super night vision. Being able to mount the v3 outside is a game-changer, no more fighting glare, foggy glass, frost, whatever. I did a video of me shoveling off the driveway last week, I just downloaded the clips from the Wyze cams, edited them together, then sped it up 1000%. Turned out great, but next time I'd probably turn off all detection so I don't have a green box around me all the time! Great video, thanks for trying different things to make it better.

I received the 8 from Woot on Friday (The UPS delivery clip in the video was them being delivered 😂). I also ordered 256 GB micro SD cards. As soon as the weather breaks, I’m going to re-wire my soffit lights so that I have a constant 120v up there, and install them on the front corners of the house. I love that with the SD card they will record continuously. That’s something ring never offered. For now Im going to keep the Ring doorbells, since I like using my regular doorbell (something Wyze doesn’t offer) and they work well with my Alexa devices. Im looking forward to getting all 8 installed for a total of 10. That should cover every corner of my property. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, I appreciate it!

Nice comparisons. I have a Ring doorbell camera and once you zoom in the sharpness is lost. I have a Google Nest camera viewing our driveway and it has a pretty decent picture quality and it’s sheltered by a roof overhang. We sometimes get a break in the signal and it has to be rebooted by disconnecting the wire for seconds. That camera is plugged in for A/C power but is Bluetooth for signal. I’m totally useless in figuring this stuff out so I have to reply on people who are more knowledgeable like maybe a 6 year old kid.😳🤔

I used to love Wyze cameras, I have 12 LOL Started useing them because their plug and play, one time purchase. now they want you to buy a monthly sub, WTF. so I donated $0 for the cloud set up but hay they gave me that option
@DeckerChristopherJ
@DeckerChristopherJ Год назад
I purchased all of mine recently, but I did read about this. So before they changed that, were you able to view events or record continuous to the cloud? I've found that putting an SD card in still lets me record 24/7 without the subscription, I just didn't get the individual event notifications for people / vehicles / pets. Since I bought 8 more and will have 10 total, I ended up just buying the cam plus subscription for $99 / year for 99 cameras. I though that was reasonable.
@jetegtmeier71
@jetegtmeier71 Год назад
@@DeckerChristopherJ Never needed the cloud when I first started. I just opened the app, after syncing using the camera to scan a upc symbol it linked the cameras to my account and I could just access the camera and view stored clips off the card. I don't think the card is even used anymore for storage is it, I thought it went right to the cloud ???? It still sucks because before I was almost completely off line. I just don't like that they wanted more money so they went subscription >:( in stead of plug an play

You can still get your hands on the rtsp firmware for the Wyze cameras! I just installed it on 3 new Wyze V3 cams within the last month and the rtsp is working great.
@DeckerChristopherJ
@DeckerChristopherJ Год назад
I did do some testing with that firmware on one of the ones I just received, I'm just worried about any vulnerabilities since its no longer supported or being updated, and I want these to be connected to the internet. It did work well during my testing though! If they would officially support it again, I would put it open all of these and invest in Blue Iris and a custom built NVR. It would be a great setup!
@blakelarson93

@@DeckerChristopherJ I did some testing with iSpy windows app but didn’t love it. Ended up using scripted which allows me to access them via apple HomeKit. Agreed probably not best for your use case, but as just security cameras, they’re working out great for me. HomeKit even sees them as a security camera so they will record detections with a premium iCloud account.

Hey Chris, are you still reasonably happy with the Wyze (for its price)? Based on your video, I grabbed a single one as a tester and I've been pretty impressed. I'm considering actually replacing my current multi-vendor (Ring, Logi Circle and Nest) setup with all Wyze. I wouldn't say that the Wyze is individually as good as any of them in terms of picture quality, but it seems good enough for my purposes. And it's one of the only vendors I've found that has a good solution for: 1) indoor window mounting (currently I use the Circle for that), 2) flood light (currently Ring), and 3) wired outdoor (currently Nest). I'd love to move to only a single vendor and app. And it helps that the cameras and the service are so much cheaper, so I can have more of them going without feeling like I'm throwing a ton of money away... Anyway, I know it's not your primary and you haven't had it that long, but I'm curious if you've found any new gotchas I should be aware of.
@DeckerChristopherJ
@DeckerChristopherJ Год назад
Hey Sean! So far I’m happy with them! I also started with the one I showed in the comparison video, and bought a second when I sold the Ring Spotlight cameras. I have since purchased 8 more, but only had a chance to install 3 of them. I did keep my Ring Doorbell Pros, as the Wyze doorbells won’t use my existing chime. I have noticed that the Rings are much faster to alert me to motion than the Wyze units, but I think that might be because I have the AI enabled on the Wyze cameras and not the rings. Setting up the Wyze cameras is MUCH easier than the rings in my opinion, and I LOVE the fact that with an SD Card installed, they record 24/7 instead of only on motion like the Rings. I do still have the Hikvision running and recording 24/7, but since I don’t let it connect to the internet, I have to VPN in to my home network first, and I usually will just to to the Wyze. The Hikvision is much clearer, and the sound is much better as well. I caught the small earthquake we had a week ago and the Hikvision really picked it up. I’ll post a video of it soon. Hopefully that helps! Come back and let me know what you decide! 😊 -Chris

I've noticed in some recent videos that the driveway seems to have some micro cracking appearing, have you noticed this? Just natural or do you think some of it might be due to thermal shock from heating and cooling of the slab?
@DeckerChristopherJ
@DeckerChristopherJ Год назад
Hey Matt! I have noticed this as well. It seems to have just started this winter, and it looks like "crazing" or "craze cracking" to me. What's weird is that other areas of the apron and sidewalk (which are not heated) also have small traces of them too, so I think it may be more related to the fact that I have not sealed it since 2019 and the water is getting slightly below the surface and freezing. I'm not a concrete expert (maybe someone else who is will read this and respond), but while it looks exactly like crazing, that typically occurs immediately after pouring, not 4 years later. I suppose it could be related to the heating and cooling, but I haven't been able to find much info about that online. I didn't think heating it up 10º-20ºF over 2-3 hours with only 80-100º Glycol going out would ever hurt it, but I suppose I could be wrong! If it is just crazing, it sounds like it's more cosmetic than structural. Either way I really need to give the entire thing a good cleaning and seal this spring!
@mattjohnson8978
@mattjohnson8978 Год назад
@@DeckerChristopherJ yes, definitely looks superficial and if it's not appearing in areas that are heated then it's probably something unrelated as you mentioned. We just did a stamped concrete patio and our concrete guy who's a third generation concrete guy told me the key to keeping everything looking great is to seal it every two years. In any event it just goes to show you how great that new camera is that I picked up that detail!
@DeckerChristopherJ
@DeckerChristopherJ Год назад
I’m not going to lie, when I first noticed it I was worried. I was on my hands and knees inspecting the slab 😂. What’s funny is, there also does not appear to be any of them in the concrete directly in front of the steps to the deck, and that is where the slab gets the hottest, and heats up the quickest with ALL of the pex loops running underneath before they turn down to the basement. I would think that if it was from thermal shock, that’s where I would surely see it? I’ve measured temps there well into the 50’s and even 60’s! I’m hoping it’s nothing, but I should probably reach out to some local concrete pros to get a professional opinion.
