Hello potters. This time we will be testing the limits of a store bought glaze in a cone 5 oxidation kiln. straight up and down, no holds. These 2 glazes are Wc-162 and wc-160, some of my favorite glazes I used to use at alpha.

Laguna has a special firing schedule for this glaze that involves a hold at 1950f for 3 hours for the crystals to really develop. That's why they say it RUNS. Because with that long of a hold it WILL run.

Thanks for testing these glazes! Super excited to try it. Problem is that I use a community kiln and I don’t have control over the kiln settings. They run usually cone 6 and any dripping is met with a frownie face note. Hate those. Time to get my own kiln I guess. Damn you Laguna!

Coyote Glazes have some really nice cone 5/6 crystalline glazes too. I've used them and I've started to make my own with some interesting results. I've also used Matt Horn's basic recipe on some cone 10 Coleman Porcelain with amazing, albeit really runny, results. I love the results from the crystalline glazes.

Thanks for doing a cone 5 it’s hard to find samples and that’s all I have available close to home. Both studios say, it’s only 46 degrees it not that different, but I do see differences. They say it’s more stable or are they just afraid of dripping?

I have been using the laguna crystaline glazes for 6 years with no problems and now I was told that any glaze with Crystals is NOT food safe. How do I check to see if it is food safe?

Filigree is pronounced fill-ih-gree, like, a weirdly pronounced filly and then agree without the a. It means delicate ornamental tracery. This video so cool, I can finally understand my dads job! I work with watercolors, so glazes with all their chemical reactions confuse me.

You might be able to get away with glazing the outside, too, *IF:* 1) You have a really tall foot; 2) You wax the bottom 1 inch of the pot; 3) You set it on a rough hand-build dish (short little walls, nothing fancy) when firing it. You could also design the body so that it has an "edge" and/or a "ledge" in the outside wall. This creates someplace on the pot to catch the runny glaze.

YouHAVE to check out Mayco Blue Hydrangea. It is amazing. Also with these glazes you have to really stir them up from the bottom

I store mine upside down as well. Blue Hydrangea is one of my favorites. Mayco also makes a Celadon Bloom that is pretty

3:01 The struggle is real, I'm convinced Laguna doesn't actually want you to use their glazes with what a pain in the ass it is to get that seal off...just buy them and dream of what could be if only you had a jackhammer. (Side note: a few weeks ago I managed to break through the steel barrier on a pint of MS-223 Desert Sunset...glaze is fully the consistency/viscosity & color of Forbidden Yogurt, looks like the contents of a Gogurt tube. 😂 As such, this is what I'll be referring to MS-223 as for the foreseeable future. Really fun glaze on its own, also paired nicely with Amaco Flux Blossom PCF-54.)

we fire ours to cone 9 and do holds and all that and make our own recipes and strain a million times and blah blah blah. so if we do a store bought one do we need to strain it? my friend did this and took out a bunch of pebbles and i couldn't help but think they artificially add crystals to the store bought stuff. thoughts?
@EarthNationCeramics
@EarthNationCeramics 4 года назад
I didn't strain or sieve the store bought one but the cone 6 recipe ones I play with I do sieve.
@Illuminating.Outer.Darkness
@Illuminating.Outer.Darkness 4 года назад
you shouldn't sieve the store-bought crystal glazes. All of those little pebbles are crystals.

Crystalline glaze will produce beautiful crystals at cone 10, but requires a lot of work and dedication. Store bought results are extremely disappointing.

It's mostly because it's a testament to his skill and nothing else....like.... making stuff as big as a human being is cool and skillful and making stuff as little as a mouse is cool and skillful..... But I see no functional used either one unless it's a commission and somebody really wants it... It's a "flex" and it seems, especially in ceramic art magazines that it's overvalued.... I don't find it more impressive if it's super small and I don't find it more impressive because it's super big, I understand it takes a pretty big amount of skill but at the end of the day people seem to like to watch it more than they need it.

My studio makes there own lavender filigreed and fires at cone 6 and that shit runs like crazy and the crystals are not consistent. It’s good to know crystalline glazes are possible for those of us who dont have access to cone 10 kilns.
