Spent 4 years in the army and used to put MRE heaters in water/ Gatorade bottles, put in a little bit of water, seal with cap, shake, throw...... BOOM!!! Disappointed they didn't try that.
When I was in Korea we peed in one to test the effectiveness in a crunch. The smell was so awful we all threw up. Also put one in a Gatorade bottle and seal it tight.
We used to do this as well and roll them under other squad connexes at the motor pool. This way when it blew, it wouldn't hurt anyone or damage anything. But if you were in the connex at the time it went off, it was a pretty deafening sound and you could feel it as well. Only the heaters we had were semi solid in form as we could cut it into strips. In fact that is what we did, cut the heater into strips and put it into an empty gatorade or similar plastic bottle with some water.
You're supposed to put the MRE meal pouch in the bag with the water and heater pack, and put that in the cardboard holder. If you put it beside it, you'll get uneven heating and you won't be heating it as efficiently.
Tristan Hendon in my school the food is filled with oil, butter and the desserts are basically filled with sugar and chocolate so we can guess which food is healthier
@@nvk0 , yeah the school food is the healthier choice, MRE's are loaded with pimarily fat and sodium, followed by sugar and protein, that doesnt even begin to cover the amount of preservative chemicals that allow them to survive for so many years and in various conditions. Take this from someone with a lot of experience around MRE's, they are just not something you would want to eat on a daily basis, both for long term health, and because they are honestly not all that tasty, they are better now than they were before, but they are still far from a suitable replacement for actual food

Huh, everyone I know puts the ration item INTO the bag before putting the whole thing into the cardboard sleeve. Myself included. EDIT: Someone forgot to knead the cheese spread...
as a member of the army I always laugh when I see "Rock or something" it sounds like when your talking to someone when their distracted on the phone and their giving directions
MREs.... I still have nightmares from the after effects. Lol. We used to put the heater in water bottles with a bit of water to make sound bombs. Lol. You can also ignight the fumes from the bags too. As for the cheese spread.... that’s how it normally looks.
Yep throw it in a drainage ditch. BOOM. Also took a pile of cooked chicken and rice on a spoon and threw it on the windshield of the humvee and road around with it stuck there for a few days.
They aren’t that bad. There’s enough variety in each box to be able to have something different. Far more variety than what you’d get in the civil war.
You haven't tried my cooking... last week I tried to bake bread and ended up with a congealed brick that shrank. I'm pretty sure you'd be begging for MREs after one meal made by me 😂
My dad introduced me to that, if you look up "rock or something" you can find a while bunch of memes on it, my dad has a shirt that says it, it's hilarious
The classic use for these is to put the heaters into a soda bottle with water and seal it, then wait for the pop. Putting Tobasco in it for some extra effect. Also, put a small flame next to the bottle for a nice show. We had a lot of cold meals just so we could have fun with these heaters.
I've seen multiple people do it this way now to keep the retort pouch from getting covered in that grey "water". It's not as effective but you can sandwich the heater between the entre and bread/dessert/hot beverage pouch to warm up both without over stuffing the FRH pouch and minimize the mess. So it's kind of a coin toss to me for how you use it since either way has advantages/disadvantages.
we use to get them steaming then light the hydrogen. the blast of heat actually helps it warm up in far colder weather. Also the meal goes into the bag with the heater, the steam helps heat it quicker
I’m early! This is the first and only time. And also I think u guys should try to freeze dry lemons and then blend it and use the powder to make lemon aid. Like if u want to see this too! Edit: who else loves being early? Oh yeah and I was getting board so I just needed to talk. I have a big mouth😑
I like how you just casually taste the heating substance and (most impressively) tell that it contains Mg and Fe I myself have only been able to detect Fe
Yes! Finally! After Basic I looked up how MRE heaters worked and loved it, although other Soldiers still thought that heater bombs were cool. I found them as exciting as water balloons. Can you you melt snow effectively with this powder? :D
Video idea: Can you somehow replace the carbon dioxide in the SodaStream with another gas or substance? Instead of carbonating a drink you could oxygenate or nitrogenate (or whatever word means into infuse something with nitrogen).
When my dad was in the army he would bring these to my older siblings for school. The problem was is that they also contained matches so the school eventually had them banned because of my siblings
While I was in the infantry between 1992-1995, we would make MRE bombs (heater powder and water in an empty soda bottle, sealed shut) to use as pranks and diversionary devices during FTX's. Depending on how much water and powder you used, and the size of the plastic bottle, you'd have between 10-30 seconds before the bottle popped with a huge noise, loud enough to trigger tinnitus.
Exploding things/danger/fire/stuff u shouldn’t do because it involves destruction: happens/ exists Calli: yay I’m so happy rn Me: ok just don’t die there sis
My family actually likes MREs and occasionally use them at home. The heaters are really neat. My dad was in the army (1947-1970) and he let us try C-rations and, once, K-rations. MREs are WAY better. The cheese spread (non-jalapeno) on the wheat bread is one of our favorites.
One thing they use to do to us during field exercises is put a heater inside a Gatorade bottle with a little water and glow fluid. Screw on the lid tight, let pressure build and throws it into a sleeping tent to simulate a grenade.
Here's something you could try. I have made a "torch" from an MRE heater that doesn't self destruct. You need a small piece of metal tubing the tinier the better. You seal off the bag, poke a hole with the tube and tape it so it is sealed. You can then light the end of the tube and it will have a sustained flame like a torch. I never tried multiple heaters in one pack though, that would be interesting to see.
Empty the Tabasco bottle, pour in the powder from the heater to fill half of the barrel of the bottle. Pour in water to the bottom of the neck of the bottle. Cap bottle and toss. And yes Calli, Tabasco goes with almost everything.
when i served, the MRE heater was a luxury item we seldom ever got, they didnt come with the MRE like they do now. most of the time we had to eat them cold, or dump the little bottle of Tabasco sauce into it to give the illusion of being hot. we had to get creative to get them hot.
@kingofrandom so after watching this mre themed video I was wondering if it is actually possible to cauterize a wound with gunpowder and or use it as a makeshift firestarter etc
Fun fact: Placing an MRE heater, or its contents, into a plastic 2-litter bottle and pouring about a cup of water into it makes a nice explosion with the decibel level of a shotgun blast. Placing the heater into a glass bottle with a screw-on cap and about 2 cups of water will cause the glass bottle to explode like a grenade (not recommended in urban environments, as the glass will act as shrapnel). Glass fragments can be launched for as far as 50 meters.
I went to Army Cadets for a portion of time, and cut to go on a camp that did FieldCraft outside (which was my favourite thing to do other than disassembly of the rifles) and when we had our MREs we didnt have those heat packs, we had to cook our food stuff in a metal pot over an open flame. Also, everyone got hard boiled sweets in theirs, and me being the lucky charm I am, got a pack of fizzy cola bottles. It was great. I was once and shared though because I felt bad
We used to make MRE bombs with plastic bottles sealed with the heating elements inside. The cheaper plastic bottles usually bursted opened after some time making some pretty loud bangs lol.
Heating rations is not just for aesthetics. The long term point of food is nutrient uptake. Short term, it's about calories. (One of the polar expeditions used sticks of margarine as their primary food stuff as it provided the greatest caloric density) Warm food heats your body directly, and provides your body more available energy.
@@davelittle6668 Hey, the best soldiers are the ones that get into trouble when they're bored. After all, you can't cause proper mayhem without drive, creativity, and improvisational problem solving.
