I served an year in the Italian Mountain Troops in 1987, MRE didn't change much from my times. Instead of energy bars we had a very good dark chocolate and condensed i milk. We also had cordiale wich was highly appreciated from the troop, it was very good and Made directly from the Istituto Farmaceutico Militare in Florence. The best year of my life.

That little folding stove is so good. I guess you could say Italians are way ahead of everyone else. The food combinations, organizing and just about everything is really good. Definitely the best MRE package.

The cordiale is a high-grade liqueur that was given to the Italian military (in litte ration of course) to warm up from the cold, especially to the sentries.

Fun fact: the presence of alcohol in the Italian MRE is due to the geographic conformation of the Italian peninsula. Italy is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea, leaving just the northern mountainous regions for potential enemies to invade; that's why boozes were considered necessaries for soldiers, because they had to warm them up in case of mountain fights

The 40% alcoholic is supposed to be put in the coffee. In Italy we call the coffe with liquor a "Caffè corretto" that means litterally "corrected coffee". It gives it a really good flavour and a great energy charge.

I'm Italian and the alcohol is for what we call *"caffè corretto"* (corrected coffee): old folks (mostly) like to put a bit of alcohol in their coffee, to stay happy I guess 😉

That Italian MRE/ration you had is extremely rare because of the Alcoholic beverage. There are only two Italian rations that have the alcoholic beverage. So it makes sense that he spent 500$ to send it to you. Those alcoholic bevrages usually makes an amazing trade item.

Hi, the cordiale liquor it taste like brandy and is given usually on winter to worm up on cold guarding nights. The one you called biscuit, i think are gallette a sort of hard crackers, basically bread replacement.

I am sure the soup can said minestrone. When I was in France I saw people having an alcohol shot and a cup of super ultra strong espresso for their breakfast . That would definitely give you a jump start in the morning.
