Personal minimums are a huge deal in aviation, and they are worth nothing if you don't force yourself to stick to them. We waited in the FBO for 3 HOURS for the ceilings to satisfy my personal minimums! Sometimes, patience proves its worth.

"just because you have the legal ability to go, doesn't mean you should".....Josh, for a young man your wisdom in these matters does not go unnoticed. After following Air Safety Institute's videos of weather related IMC fatal accidents, I hope you never change your approach to this. I can't help but feel that Dan's AQP program has helped immensely. I suspect there are literally 1000s of IFR rated pilots in GA that do not take this approach before launching and the results can be tragic. Keep up the good work. And yes all 235K heard Chelsea call you "babe". Not keeping this quiet any longer 👍😀

My dad was a veteran flight instructor and examiner. He always said "You're much better off down here wishing you were up there rather than up there wishing you were down here". He also said if you had any doubts then don't go. His advice and other mentors have kept me out of trouble so far. Another great video thanks Josh.

I'm no expert by any stretch, but watching your videos is really helping me understand aviation. I've found lately that many times when I learn of an accident etc, that as I take the info you've taught, and I do research on the data involved, I'm able to figure out what happened most of the time. When I read the conclusions, the estimations I had formed from the data of what likely happened are frequently correct. You bring a lot of great knowledge and wisdom to aviation. Thank you for this and your videos. 👍 Also just wanted to add... try not to let Chelsea go man. You'd both be winners on that one. I mean, she's calling you babe man. Wow...Run with it dude.

I'm a flight sim nut who can't get my ticket due to a long-term medical issue. I actually seek out bad weather, low mins, practice VOR (and even NDB) approaches by hand. Don't get me wrong: Not saying that is preferable in the real world. But, I often do enjoy the IFR experience.

I love your comment Josh, that you "might have skills to help you fly IFR" but you "aren't going to be stupid about it.". Just because you can fly in limited visibility with your IFR rating and excellent skills doesn't mean you should. And I think your explanation about this was very good for pilots to understand safety and common sense should be a major factor for determining your actions. Those of us who are not pilots do this all the time when storms or fog come on the ground, deciding whether we can safely drive and navigate through the storm. Sometimes we see those who do not exercise this common sense end up a statistic. It's great seeing you teaching by example as well as by explanation so you and Chelsea can enjoy your trip.

Good ADM on the ground prior to departure, sir. Thanks for the demo and the explanation. Just because you can legally launch into the soup doesn’t mean you should. If you must execute an emergency turnaround in IMC you may be doubling your workload and stress to make a must-do landing at (or below!) minimums. 👍

A good practice I've learned during my IFR training was to calculate whether you would see your runway at your lowest ceiling for a given runway glideslope/glidepath. Let's say your WX is OVC005 at 1000meters and your MNM is 200ft. For a 3° glide (which is equal to 300ft/NM), it would mean that even though you break out of the clouds above your MNM at 500ft, you still wouldn't see the runway until you're down at 162ft (which is below your MNM!). For the math: At MNM 200ft, distance from threshold for a 3° glide = 1235m. So, at 1000m, you're at 162ft. If you plan and to the quick math you could consider to divert before even attempting an approach even though your MNMs looks fine and legal. Hope this makes sence!

When I was doing my instrument training GA approaches were generally 500' minimums. I think it was my second IFR training flight that we entered IMC with a 500' ceiling. I like your personal minimums. It'll help keep you and yours out of the newspaper. :) I'll always regret not finishing my ticket. I was so close... I'll get back to it... Hi Josh, question if taxiing from Atlantic to an “A” intersection takeoff on runway 11 rather than “C” intersection nd then have n extra 5000’+ or 9K to almost 10K of additional runway for takeoff if you had any engine troubles in the low IFR ceilings? My instructor and FAA checkride doesnt allow leaving runway behind us? Love your videos and places you fly to; thanks.
