I'm going to suggest sticking w/plant-based laundry soap because it doesn't have all sorts of ingredients in it that aren't necessary & could cause skin irritations. Also, most people use far too much laundry detergent. You don't need half a cup of liquid. 1/8 c. is plenty. For powder versions, a tablespoon of it is plenty. I know...sounds crazy for 20 gallons of water...but the soap is just to make water "wetter". It's the water pushing thru laundry that's what's cleaning it....NOT the soap. And if you use less detergent, the ones that are pricier aren't as pricey. Right? If you use half a cup of a pricey one, you'll go thru a bottle in no time flat ! It'll last a lot longer if you use 1/8 cup instead. The detergents that say they're "free" of this that & the other aren't any better than ones that aren't from the research I've seen. I recommend checking out Patric Richardson aka The Laundry Evangelist. This guy knows laundry like you wouldn't believe. I've been doing laundry for 53 years & I've learned some new tricks from Patric (that's how he spells it).One of the things I learned was NOT to use fabric softener. Let me tell you, I have ALWAYS used fabric softener ! So, we're talking hard-core user here. Just one use of it reduces the absorbancy of towels by 80%. I have stopped using it. It leaves residue....& so do most commercial detergents. Good for you to do videos like this....I think they're very helpful!
Another thing to think about is how much of a detergent you actually need to use in a load of laundry. My college chemistry professor experimented with this and found that you could get the same results using a quarter of the amount recommended on the box of Tide (in a top loader). It’s worth experimenting yourself to see how much you need of your own detergent in your own machine.
Just an FYI - when a product is “fragrance free” it doesn’t necessarily mean the product won’t have a scent; the ingredients the product is made with with still have their natural scent. 🙃
I came here to say this! Fragrance free means that there is no scent added so any smell is the natural scent of the ingredients used in the product and unscented means that fragrance was added to mask the natural smell of the ingredients. I learned this when researching baby wipes!
I love Dropps! Great for the environment too! I have to go fragrance free as much as possible due to my severe psoriasis, but I love the clean laundry “scent” after doing a load.
Nelly’s laundry, rockin green, Molly Sud’s, and Norwex Laundry, these are more natural and way healthier then the ones you tested other then branch basics which is nice. The EWG is more accurate on test the ingredients and scoring.
I would love it if you could try the Earth Breeze eco sheets or something similar. I've been thinking of trying them out myself, but I want to use up the laundry detergent I already have. I'm currently using Ariel Alpine and I love it, but I wanted to switch to something eco friendly.😊
Thanks for taking the time to research all this info for us, it's really helping me to make better choices in my search for better laundry products. 👍👍👍
I love Persil laundry detergent! All of your video ideas sound great. I would love to see every video that you mentioned doing. I really enjoyed your review.
All my cleaners, except for 2 or 3, are cruelty-free (no animal testing). From there, they need to be natural. I prepared a spreadsheet for laundry that included, price, tests of cleaning stains, EWG ratings, certifications from either Leaping Bunny or PETA plus a couple other variables. I run a macro that orders the list for best laundry cleaner. It was very informative and it determined what I buy. I loved seeing someone else checking for important factors.
If I remember correctly, I heard online that seventh generation is one of the “green washed” brands where they truly aren’t as good as they claim. I haven’t looked into the claims myself but just something to consider. All of these options you provided are probably better than my detergent so I’m not being snobby or anything 😂 lol
Who wants to have to measure and mix laundry detergent?! Seventh Generation is my favorite. Persil was what I used for years because of its cleaning power, but not environmentally friendly
College student here… I was always told that you shouldn’t have fabric softener and detergent together because detergent is supposed to strip and clean and softener is supposed to condition. Is this wrong ? Why do so many detergents have fabric softener ?
I have been using the Dropps pods and the Amazon Solimo pods which have been 16-20 cents per load depending on the size purchased. Then I heard about The Laundress (can be up to .32 cents per load if you buy the smaller quantity) and tried that with a coupon code. I only used it on our clothing and some linens we use, and use regular pods on cleaning rags. The Laundress is very highly fragranced. I would like to compare their effectiveness on stains more than anything though. Because that is what they would come down to for me. Right now I pre-treat stains but I have no idea which one is the most effective on stains. And if the stains would come out with the detergent alone without pre-treating. Also I stopped using fabric softener and now use vinegar instead because it doesn't coat the fabric which tends to break it down. The vinegar works really well and I have no static cling.
Hi Sophie, I’ve only just discovered your channel and I’m ADDICTED! Thank you so much for sharing about the Think Dirty app, I had no idea it even existed and I can get it here in the UK too 🙌🏻 Best wishes from across the pond! 🇬🇧🙋🏼♀️🤗
scent can be difficult if you truly have very sensitive skin, that is often what irritates the skin so I would probably recommend a scent free detergent. I've actually found that putting some essential oil drops on dryer balls to give it a great scent!
Also fabric softener is not good on your washer machine which can cause build up, so can to much detergent which means you should stay away from pods or strips. Also powders can clog the hoses in your washer machine. It should only be used to pre-soak your clothes or to spot stain soak. That’s why I don’t use homemade powder laundry and you should never use vinegar as a fabric softener. Dryer balls are better bc dryer sheets can tear up your dryer. I would also like u to review Zero Odor laundry
I gave up tide since the pandemic. Their prices & weight went off the charts at the home depots in New York where I live. The bottles shrank to a little baby bottle size for triple the price.
Also, things like PolyVynl Alcohol are plastics. Those sheets that are popular right now for 'protecting the planet' are probably worse for the Earth as you would have a harder time filtering out liquid plastic than a plastic jug.
Currently I buy Seventh Generation Laundry detergent but I want to try those laundry sheets, less waste. Also don’t use fabric softner, I use dryer balls. Yep I use the think dirty app too! I really like the One Dose Seventh Generation which only lets you squeeze out enough for one load. No measuring required. I believe that’s the concentrate one? Seventh generation stain remover is good also and the oxy boosters.
What matters is how well the detergent cleans, since that's why we wash clothes. So-called "natural" products are almost never great at cleaning. The best fragrance/color- free detergent is Tide Free Ultra+ Stain Releas, sold only at Target.
Agreed that what matters most is whether it actually cleans. I really had no issues with my clothing coming out clean with any of these and again was quite impressed with the cleaning power of the branch basics!
I always thought that too until I tried Molly's suds. It's the best natural laundry detergent I've found it works extremely well and I don't notice a difference between Molly's Suds and unnatural laundry detergent such as tide. Try it you won't regret it.
When you said natural detergent, I thought you probably knew that either Dropps or Tru Earth. I wouldn’t expect a good natural detergent from a commercial brand We just got our first shipment of Dropps . This little pod does a whole load easily. No waste, and no shipping bottles all over the country. Even the box is compostable
@@SophisticatedOrganization yes. Sorry for the typos. I have to use voice recognition because of tendinitis. Plus I was trying to get dinner on the table
@@SophisticatedOrganization The secret slob. Talks about Tru Earth. Erica Lucas talks about Dropps. What makes Dropps memorable commercial , that got me talking to my husband about what he want to use. One big plus for us, as we are older, is not having to lug any kind of bottle. It’s a small UPS box full of pods. No heavy lifting. Hope you get to try both of them!
Hi Sophie, I need a bit of help on the Dropps cost per load, that you wanted. Dropps Stain and Odor detergent, 56 loads: $24, but buy once price (43¢/load?) $18 subscription cost (32¢/load?) We bought the buy once price. Hubby is happy with it. No jug to deal with. Easy pods. Thanks for pointing out that #2 is acceptable, but it doesn’t mean that a manufacturer will buy it as material. Dropps comes packaged neatly in compostable packaging. Couldn’t find it on the think dirty app. I would think it’s newer technology than 7th generation. The commercial shows the CEO taking a bath in it.
There are truly so many things to consider and "natural" isn't necessarily the same as "eco-friendly." I agree, I love that dropps you don't have to deal with the big jug! That is a huge plus!
I am!! For the detergent their website says "1 part Branch Basics Concentrate to 2 parts water. For laundry, you'll use about 1 Tbls of the solution for a regular sized lightly soiled load. You'll need a little more for larger loads or heavily soiled loads of laundry." To make the detergent I use the lines and instructions on the bottle 😊
Truly Free? I'm thinking about trying it, but the offer I found for the starter doesn't tell me how much it will cost to continue after I've purchased the empty bottles and "free" refills.
Yes! For my microfiber towels I avoid softener as it can coat the fibers of the cloth and make them less effective for cleaning! With workout clothes it can actually block the sweat and dirt from washing out!
Also another question where can I find like the samples for those products that you mentioned in the video? We are trying to buy a better detergent for my Mom because she's having allergic reactions to some of the chemicals on the regular detergents, and we don't want to keep buying a regular sizes just for trying new detergents, thank you very much and have a great day, by the way you are so beautiful.
Check the ingredients. Nice to have super bright whites and vibrant colors on while RIP in the casket, but I'd rather not be poisoned while I look and smell nice.
Very true, the branch basics is a great option for liquid detergent that is eco-friendly. This round I was more interested in natural/non-toxic, and eco-friendly is a whole other world! There are lots of great pod/tab options and even laundry strips which are more eco friendly 😊
@@SophisticatedOrganization 1 bar of Kirk's castile soap or other bar soap (no moisturizers because they will leave a residue) shredded 1 cup of borax 1 cup of washing soda 1 cup of baking soda Blend all of the ingredients into a fine powder and use 2-4 tablespoons per load I also use 1/4 cups of white distilled vinegar as a rinse. The reaction between the detergent and the vinegar seems to get the smells out.
