Yikes! I've never given my Carter and Son tools such rigorous workouts, but I do enjoy using them. And yes, one does notice those metal handles in the winter. Cheers!

Acquired a Carter and Son 5/8 bowl gouge about a year ago turning about two years. For clean, smooth cuts, it is wonderful. Holds the edge and sharpens with just a couple of light passes on the wheel.

Big daddy was takin a monster shaving, it looked amazing 😮🤙 you should make a wooden handle for the smaller gouge, would it help with vibrations maybe? 😁

I have a few C&S tools and really like them. They last longer than most because they hold an edge longer. Haven't used my other thread chasers since I bought theirs. Good review. Take care, Dave

I have several C&S tools. Though not nearly the level of a wood turner of your caliber, I agree wholeheartedly with your review. I do not have the parabolic gouge you reviewed, but I do have their heavy scraper, 2 skews, a bowl gouge and 2 spindle gouges. All hold an edge much, much better than my Henry Taylor, Crown and Robert Sorby M2 HSS tools. Plus, I have found the C&S tool steel cleans up quickly and nicely on a CBN wheel. I concur with your assessment of the handles, Tomi. They do not have the warmth and feel of a good wood handle. I would like a wood handle option or a good way to install the C&S tool steel in a wood handle.

Thank you William for watching and comment, they are great tools and company.... I agree for the handle, I still didn't use it , just dont like that feel.... Like you said , maybe they will bring out some collar system.... Thank you

Great advice. You describe the length flute /rod introducing harmonics may be the same issue I have with one of my 1/2” gouges from Thompson and Sons. You have given me an idea of how to test it. Thanks!
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Год назад
Thank you for watching, now I would not use my method to test harmonics and judge only by that, consider how it feels when cutting, noice, vibrations.... I believe that only that kind of flute , open V type has that issue.... Parabolic flute from Carter and Son are excellent.... More steel on parabolic flute and more versitile

Been a fan and user of C&C tools for a long time. Hold an edge very well. I have not tried the thread chaser but would trade my Sorby for one!

Hi Tomislav those were interesting observations there. They looked like they all had little holes at their handle ends, apart from the thread chaser. What is their purpose, if they are indeed holes? Best regards. 🙃

Good comparisons. I really like my OneWay double ended gouges but they will sing and introduce chatter if I don't have them a certain depth into the handle. Interesting what those vibrations can do and when they show up.

Very true 😉 haven't tried oneway yet, double ended gouge is on my list 🤗
@timofeyzhukov-khovanskiy9173
Very nice bowl! The Henry Taylor tools you used, were these m42 steel ones? I was looking at C&S tools for some of their scrapers, seems like they do m42 for most of them
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Год назад
Thank you for watching 😀 I'm not sure what steel are they, my guess m2 or slithly better, definitively not m42, Carter and Son I believe all tools are m42... Henry taylor makes one of the best tools so you can't go wrong with both of them...

What are your thoughts on the 16 tpi thread chaser vs the 12 tpi? Why did you choose the 16? Thanks for another great video
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Год назад
Thank you Steve, Well I didn't know either which one to get, but it stay with me that Mike was saying that 16 is great all round size, so I pick that one .... So far I like the size and travel of this 16tpi....

It seemed to me that the groove at 1/2 gouge looked more like a U-shape than a V-shape.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Год назад
Similar looks, U flute has parallel wings, this one has more in V shape.... But I understand your thinking 😀, Thank you for watching

C&S do not provide Tormek sharpening instructions for their products. It would take a day for them to develop these instructions. At the price they charge, perhaps someone over there could get off the chair and get this project done.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Год назад
That is not nice to say about one company, they produce quallity tools, and in my mind if you know how to sharpen already bowl gouge on your tormek,then why do you need instruction from them? You have instructions in tormek on how to sharpen , Glenn Lucas makes templates as well...

Every turner sharpen then own grind variation , just use your current setup to sharpen Carter and Son tools or any other for that matter
