Testing Out the Snail Roll Seed Starting Method

I'm not a trends person in general but when I saw this idea on Instagram, I knew I had to give it a go, just to see if it would work out. In this video, I made both a sweet pea and marigold snail roll. The idea behind Snail Rolls is to grow a large number of seedlings in a very small space and it was originally conceived by Farida Sober. I just saw this method a couple days ago. Perhaps an indoor watering can with a thin tube would be better to water, so the wax/parchment paper would not be wetted while watering first. I think it should work, the roots will grow and hold the soil in place so when the paper eventually rots, it shouldn't be too much of an issue...? Well, in theory lol. Looking forward to how this develops!

Funny thing is, I usually use a watering can with a thin spout, but thought this would cause less disturbance because it's finer spray - was totally wrong about that! Ah yes, in theory....we'll see how this all pans out!

@@TheGardeningMe Wanted to update you - Out of 7 Gryphon begonia seeds that I sowed in Feb, one may(?) have germinated last week. The sprout is teeny tiny, I was trying to distinguish it from the algae covered greenish perlite lol, but I was like hmmm, these are two symmetrical green dots, perhaps they are....leaves...?? Just SO tiny! I don't even know if this is it - but I've got nothing to one side, and eucalyptus on the other, which looks different from the tiny sprout. Gonna try to see if this is it, will be glad if I have even one plant of it - it'll be more than $6-$7 to buy it from garden centres, I'll console myself lol. Do begonias take this long to sprout, and as tiny as lisianthus when they start out?? :o

@@matchynishiThose may very well be seedlings! 3/5 of mine have germinated so far (not holding out much hope for the other two). It did take a long time (I hear you on the algae!) and they do start off as tiny specks. Apparently this is normal but once they get going, they grow quickly....I'm still waiting for that phase 😬 Fingers crossed for both of us!

The watering in would have disturbed all the seeds. With the soil already moistened it didn’t need top watering. I’d have suggested a light dusting of soil to cover them and bottom watering as needed.

I have a BUNCH of huge sheets of those foam sheets, planned on trying this for my peppers and flowers. Its great cause I only have one grow light. Saves a lot of space. I saw someone else use bubble wrap lol

It's totally a space saver! Hmmm - never thought of bubble wrap which I do have a stash of....may try that next time 🙃.

@TheGardeningMe Awesome, I'm gonna experiment with different materials, see which I like best. I'm pretty wary of using anything paper (even cardboard) cause where it will be wet I think the roots will just go right through the layers. Can't wait to see how yours turns out, maybe the wax on the paper will prevent the water from soaking in and making it too delicate?

I'm thinking of the bags my dogs dry good comes it? Cut those 50lb bags into strips? Water proof and free.

@@TheGardeningMeinteresting that you have not watched other videos of this very method - because almost all of the videos / shorts I‘ve seen used only plastic bubble wrap material from their online shopping deliveries.

We've experienced the failure of the 'Deep Rootrainers' system - they are exceedingly FLIMSY and did not even last 1 season. This looks very promising, tho I learned of it 2 months too late for 2024 crops.

If this works, it will definitely be a lot more cost effective than root trainers!
