Wood Fillers are often used to fill small nail holes, small gouges, and even joint gaps and other defects in furniture and other wood projects but how these fillers work with wood stains and wood dyes or even topcoat finishes like varnish or hardening oils is not well documented so this video is a start to that using both Red Alder and Walnut and comparing some DIY grain fillers with on commercial grade filler to see how they all work. Which wood filler for large gaps is a question I commonly get, so we'll be testing using a large drill hole. I also get asked about stainable wood filler, so we'll be testing also.

I keep a selection of wood dust in every shade I have ever used. I store them in small 'Spice Jars' so that I can match a wood colour with the right sawdust. I have had great success with using these along with a slower-setting (it says that it's a 60 second set up, but I have found it a little longer, which is ideal) CA Gel glue. It doesn't shrink, is sandable and takes a good finish; whether that be waxes, oils or varnishes. I don't think I have ever stained it, but only because I have never stained any wood.

Agreed , I like Colin's advice. I have a wooden inside door that the dog has scratched and I have tried sanding out scratches. The scratches still show thru the paint. I was just trying to find something to fill the scratches so they dont show thru the paint. Also I took to covering doors with acrylic to keep dogs from scratching and that works for a good ten years or so.

One of my granddad's, I think my dad's dad, use to use a couple drops of gravy browning to darken any of the sawdust and wood glue fillers he use to make. Never knew why, but I suppose if you're making your filler darker that would do it.

Very interesting test. Thanks for sharing. You put a lot of time in it. The result is not exactly what you hoped for but nevertheless it's better this than leaving a hole. But the holes you drilled out are very large compared to small nail holes or joint gaps. I think that for those examples sawdust with yellow woodglue will do. When filling bigger holes, such as you showed (I guess they're about 20 mm in diameter, I think I'd use plugs (made from the same wood with a plug cutter) and glue them in.
@WeedMIC

for knots (not so huge as in your video) i drill them out completely at an angle and fill the hole with a dowell. the dowell will look exactly like a knot.

My best recipe is sawdust mixed with Sherwin Williams AC laquer - the single pack stinky PU laquer -. 3 years ago I had a solid beechwood heringbone floor to be sanded and varnished, with gaps of 1-2 mm. My homemade filler is not as hard as the epoxy, not as soft as shellac, and we all know that every glue is advertised to be stronger than the wood. It has the same hardness as the wood - depending on the mixing ratio-. Got the same texture and same colour after the finish sanding and varnishing - 1 coat of Sherwin Williams sand sealer, 2 coats of 2 pack PU. I was happy, the customer - who is a professional carpenter with 20+ years experience 😀 and fitted the floor himself - was happy, his father, who is a builder for more than 50 years was thrilled. Next time I'll try the mixture with Sherwin Williams water bourne, that keeps the hue even better. Both materials have a short curing time, between 30 minutes - 2 hours - depending on the size of the hole, gap - can be sanded. For structural resistance fiberglass can be added into the mixture. In your case Colin, I would try the mixture with sandsealer, as it is a matt finish it should well absorb the Osmo. I'm with painting and decorating for the last 15 years, recently started with woodworking. I learnt a lot from your videos, keep up the good work, stay safe!

You missed to test bone glue and saw dust. That will be great like shellac in terms of handling, but it will dry REALLY tough and strong. It will also take oils, stain etc.

You should try Famowood wood filler either in latex or solvent base. It comes in various wood colors & is actually stainable & quick setting. I prefer the solvent based but have good luck with both taking Zar brand stain.

friends carpenter teacher/master taugh great wood filler. which i use, if theres not commercial one in hand. Excellent, traditional (finnish) and easy filler 1 liter of water, 1-2 tablespoons of wheat flour + sawdust/sanding dust, which should be moistened first. Wood dust are added until the putty is a suitably solid mass.

Have you tried filling the voids with fine sawdust sanded from the same piece of wood, adding drops of super glue then heating it with a heat gun, sand it, then coat with the finish. The void looks just like the surrounding wood?

Brown CA glue. Thanks. I've used CA because it penetrates cracks all the way to the bottom. I've used it for screw holes where I want to screw and will want to unscrew a wood screw or bolt in the future a few times but don't want to bother with an insert. CA penetrates and hardens the threads in the wood. (After it cures, if I'm using a bolt I run the tap thru again.) But I always had to accept that any stain would stand out bright.

Thanks Colin. Most informative. As we are all at different stages of woodwork knowledge, could you give some details on dust particles? Is it best for dust from a saw or sander for example. Thanks
@Jake_Cotumaccio
@Jake_Cotumaccio 2 года назад
I know I’m seeing this a year later but that’s a good question. If you’re using dust after hand sanding, you don’t want it to be too fine, otherwise it doesn’t have any depth and just looks thick paint. I’d use anywhere between 80-120 grit to create that dust, but nothing higher. I personally use a combination of sanding dust and the tiny chips that come from using a sharp hand saw or a rasp. They’re so small that you can move them around like dust but they add some variety of size/shape to the mixture to make it look more organic.

If you have the time, and you can get the chance to experiment on a piece of identical waste timber, then try mixing sawdust from a drilled hole with PVA and match. We also have stuff called Rustin's Plastic Wood in a fair few shades. Can be stained or drilled as well as. A word of caution ... it goes off really quick. Best to layer it and check match as you go.

It's never a good idea to run anything man made through a planer or jointer. The glues and resins used to hold wood or fibers together will dull and even ruin blades/cutters. Still, I've seen people do it.
