Be really nice as a tractor attachment at "tractor attachment scale." Plant entire Forests, dramatically increase the growth prospects for every type of tree and bush imaginable. Eliminates the need for hydraulic fluid and *typical fuel*(battery instead of diesel.) Use your tractor as a power supply mechanism for keep the battery at a constant state of charge and from a simple hand held to commercial grade. 25 gallons of diesel might last a full season ... but again as an attachment "in case of dramatic battery degradation." If the battery lasts for a decade or more without permanent impairment could definitely change the game for all sorts of activities well beyond gardening to shall we call it "True Homesteading" where a single tool has a multitude of uses. (flood control, post hole, foundation work, "ditch witch" etc etc)

I just used an auger bit in a drill to plant 100 Norway spruce seedlings. The soil was clay. The bit would grab and drill in from time to time and the bit would stop spinning, so the drill would suddenly start to try to spin and almost broke my wrist a few times. This thing seems to have an auto shut off to stop things like that from happening. I'd definitely give this a try rather than use the auger in a drill.

I like the design and I can see the usefulness of a small auger. However, I can get an auger bit for my 20v drill for much less. I don't want a singular tool that uses a proprietary battery platform. I can get a bit for my 20v drill and have more power and extra batteries that I can swap out when my battery runs out of juice.

You can buy an auger bit that will fit any drill for $10 any any hardware store or amazon. Your drill is probably more powerful than this thing and it's way easier to hold on to with it's L shaped handle. The only thing you are missing is that stupid shovel piece that doesn't seem to be doing anything. At first I thought it helped stabilize the bit when you start the hole, but it didn't seem to do much of anything. Most auger bits you buy have the end of the bit stick out a few inches past the blades at the end so you can center your hole and stabilize the bit while digging.

Not sure how the soil differs in the northeast vs. southeast PA, but we have two garden auger bits, one smaller one like this one and a larger one for gallon pots and they both cut through our rocky clay very well. I use a cheaper ryobi hammer drill with the side handle to help hold the sucker because those auger bits definitely want to fling you around if you hit a rock. They have saved us a ton of time with bulb planting. I'd suggest giving it a try with one of the cheaper auger bits on amazon if you're curious before investing in a purpose-made tool like this which i'm sure comes at a premium. Just go easy, because if you're wailing on the throttle when an auger hits a rock you're dislocating your shoulder. That's one positive of silver cymbal's reviewed product, the auto-stop sounds like a shoulder-saver.

Without the shovel blade, 100% of the torque produced by the tool will be applied to your wrist. That still appears to be a problem. Notice how the demonstrator feels the need to put his left hand on the body of the tool where no handle is provided. A pistol grip and/or left handle would have prevented this, but they used a straight handle like a manual screwdriver, which most American workers refuse to use. A good auger has speed control and only gently drops dirt at the edge of the hole. No "shield" necessary.

I used a similar device about 30 years ago to plant daffodils along a motorway grass margin. Its called an auger drill, they have existed for centuries, nothing new, the fact that it now has an electrical drive mechanism does not set it apart as a new invention.

Man QVC swindled me, my roto shovel didn't come in a fancy case like that, it was all assembled in a box

Well that soil looked fairly easy to work anyway. Try it on a heavily compacted soil full of shale. If it chews through that, then I’ll be impressed.

I have something similar. It's a auger that attaches to a drill. It doesn't have the shovel attachment to it but it works similar. I've been using it on and off for a year now and it works great. I definitely would consider buying one of these.

Those augers can be useful. The shield on the side of this makes this really effective. It bits into the soil as it digs. I was also surprised that the tool being straight is easier for tis. You don't lose control of it and you can use two hands.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ryobi coming out with something like this to add to their eclectic 18v lineup. I’ve been using drill augers from Amazon, which seem to do about the same thing, but much cheaper. Use them with a beater Ryobi drill that I won’t lose sleep over if it burns out.

Same thought. Maybe an Expand-It attachment?

Ryobi would make an 18v back scratcher if they thought people would buy it lol

When I was a kid in the 1970s, we used a shovel - uphill, both ways.

I'd take off that shovel part, don't see it do anything other than inhibit the tool from going in that direction

The shovel part pushes the dirt out of the hole if you have ever used and auger it makes it easier to use
@JoseMartinez-nm7ht
@JoseMartinez-nm7ht 3 года назад
@@unmanaged I use an auger every year in the spring to plant my veggie garden. And actually it will do the opposite of what you're saying. If you pull the auger out while it's spinning, it will pull the dirt out and fling it in all directions, I guess it can act as a shield if it's facing you. But maybe you can explain how to use that shovel thing since I never used an auger with that attachment.
@JoseMartinez-nm7ht
@JoseMartinez-nm7ht 3 года назад
@@unmanaged 1:30 you can see what I mean, it's just a shield against flinging dirt at you, look at the spread of the dirt.
