NASA's Ingenuity helicopter is traveling to Mars attached to the belly of the Perseverance rover and must safely detach to begin the first attempt at powered flight on another planet. Tests done at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Lockheed Martin Space show the sequence of events that will bring the helicopter down to the Martian surface.

They had to land on 18 February. They needed to land in a specific area of Jezero Crater at a time when the orbiting relay satellites could see both the landing site and earth. That meant 18 February at 15:43 EST. No matter when they launched the rover, it had to arrive at Mars to land at 15:43 EST on 18 February, so every single launch day had a slightly different trajectory to Mars to ensure that happened. Even more impressive when you look at it that way.

@megaraph5551 4 года назад
@@subodhbadgujar51 I don't think it is able to be picked up by the rover as it was probably just a one way mechanism to put Ingenuity down. And Ingenuity wasn't probably designed to be picked up anyways since it was designed to experiment on flights around Mars and to scan paths for the rover so it can probably just land close to where the rover is planned to go. Also, the mechanism/process to put it down is already a challenge to the engineers yet alone picking it up. As what I've read that even an additional washer to the rover is already worthy of a debate to the engineers, yet they were able to let a helicopter hitch a ride on the most sophisticated Mars rover ever built.
