32:23 I think the forward assist is not only in case the bolt doesn’t go into battery properly, but in case you need to charge a round quietly, you can release the charging handle slow and then use the forward assist to push the round into battery quietly!

I spoke with Tom from Blackout Defense this week, and they will be releasing an upper with a forward assist to the public soon due to people wanting one.
@BlakeJoy
@BlakeJoy 11 месяцев назад
You can also do this by pressing the BCG forward with the little cutout. Some people on YT have shown you can't do this, but if your gun isn't extremely dirty, you have a round that is out of spec, or just BS-ing people then this is totally possible, I have done it with many of my AR's...hell sometimes just letting it back slowly and pressing my charging handle back into the catch has put it into battery just from the force of the buffer spring. My time in the army I never used the FA, same as a civilian. I've always just gone with grip and rip to load another round. BTW I'm not here to diss on the FA, all my AR's besides one has a FA, I just see comments like this a bunch. Loading a round quietly is pretty rare, either hunting or high speed Oper8ting lol.

That duel taper is actually a SWAGE. There are a few machining companies that have different patents on this type of connection. Swagelok, Parker.. to name a few. This type of lock up is concentric and usually stronger than the parts being joined together. I'm very surprised no one came out and did this along time ago. kudos to Blackout Defense.

Barrel nut changes: What we need is a high speed camera view of a bullet being fired, while focused on the barrel. Usually the barrel moves around in a liquid waveform. So take the HG off and take a video showing the changes. Balance: We need to see where the balance point is.

@@scott3708 I love your research tactics! I wonder if all this motion help heat up the barrel? I watched a high speed video of a STD barrel from a 5.56 being fired in 2016. I have been using an AR-15 since my days in Vietnam, 3/4 Marines. The basic design of the rifle is still good, but with the changes years ago, I would not change anything. These boutique rifles are just money makers and don't really make sense for the average people. In my words, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Keep it simple, and don't over complicate it. Usually when I see an AR review for something that I like I'm thinking about how it's cool, but I love the gun I'm shooting with enough that I'd rather get something completely different like an AK which are banned in my state sadly, but that platform basically sells itself. But watching this review there's a lot to love. I see more justifications in this than Q's marketing for their stuff. I'm a big proponent for the forward-assist as I've used it to clear a jam instinctively early into owning an AR. I like to say it's so intuitive that a 17 year old kid could under high stress knows to use it when all he needs is one more round out of that rifle.

Agree with the ddm4 V7 by DD. Had purchased mine for $1400 a few years back and it’s a great AR. Just not a $14,1500-2400$ AR. The price is erratic depending on merchant deals. It runs good, it’s accurate and you can feed it just about anything. My PSA Sabre is $400 cheaper but runs all day the same. My purpose isn’t to look good shooting. It’s to send grain to a specific target as quickly and accurately as possibly to which both do this. My FozTech fighter elite is much lighter has a better two stage trigger and actually shoots faster and feels superior in hand and appearance wise.

POF has been doing this for Years, Using the Barrel Nut as a Heat Seak. Which has Weight Distribution. Look at POF Heat Seak Barrel Nut. Idk about anymore, but the Older POFs used Heavy Fluted Barrels, with a Large Heat Sink Barrel Nut, and a Piston System. They quite literally created an Unstoppable AR-15. IV8888 did a Meltdown of the POF P416 and it never failed completely. The downside was POF was on the Heavier Side. Well, I started shooting AR's back in the early to mid 70's and they didn't come with FA's back then, but I never needed one. Joined the military and went 11B and had the A1's, and then got the A2's, and again, I seriously do not ever recall "NEEDING" the FA, but I always tapped it, more of a habit thing than anything, but looking back on 100's of 1,000's of rounds I alone have put down range, not including my brothers, I have NEVER seen or heard of any of us using the FA. With that said, if it was an option, I'd get it for sure, just because I like to tap it out of habit. I also think that most rifles are more accurate than most shooters, but every little advantage helps. Keep up the great work.

Hey man I love your vids, recently I bought a radical AR. I know people like us don’t have lots of cash to dump into a rifle, can you make a video on how to upgrade it, like what trigger, hand guard, muzzle and stuff like that to make it even more reliable. Thanks man and keep up the good content.

The main reason adjustable gas blocks aren’t on more internal piston guns is cause of the higher chance for reliability issues that may come under heavy use compared to an external piston.Internal piston guns really weren’t designed to have adjustable gas or be suppressed, just throwing that out there for anyone looking at one of these.

I was spoiled when I bought my first LWRC having Complete Ambi controls. The ability of locking the bolt BACK with my trigger finger seemed natural and obvious. 9 years and 10 builds later, it's been a challenge finding lowers designed properly and/or not ridiculously expensive with the same features. It's 10x easier trying to train yourself or new shooters on a platform with Trigger finger controls. Because if it's busy doing primary functions, your fingers not on the trigger while still maintaining a good grip and that leaves your support hand for secondary operations like running the Ch handle or grabbing a mag. It makes me sad it's taken this long to get a bolt release on more lowers, I wonder how long it will take for a standardized bolt hold?

@@noonespecial9840 It functions as a release as well as a catch using the trigger finger as you said you needed. It is a way to gain that functionality with a rifle not built that way. The bolt catch/release is the same part on many firearms, including the AR platform. No need to flex how much more you train than me.

Other manufacturers don't produce ARs at that price point because a lot of what you're paying for is a brand name. Their brand name is associated with quality and performance, and they charge you for that. It is what it is. And its exactly why i decided to start building my own. You can build a very high quality, accurate and durable rifle for half to 2/3rds of what a Daniel Defense will cost you.

Very cool stuff. I'm extremely deep on the armorer/gunsmith side of this rabbit hole. You did a pretty great job of describing those features and what they are for. The thing that got me interested in these is the barrel (naturally). Tacom structured barrels also use the milled rings for harmonic dampening, however they mill theirs non-uniformly. Uniformity promotes resonance, non-uniformity deadens it, which is what we want. Also the bead blasting adds surface area for heat extraction too on a micro level. I don't like drop in triggers because they trap debris and are all proprietary and because AR trigger pins are designed to pivot inside the pin bore, this allows free hammer movement. Locking the pins in place can slow the hammer down creating a potential for light strikes. Pins that are the right size and triggers with appropriate tension J-springs to retain them should not walk out. But they at least solved one of the problems with drop in's by sealing all those screws in place, so thats a win. A note about the pads for upper/lower slop - any device that puts force between the upper and lower to prevent slop (including screws in the lower), will inadvertently create wear on the pivot and takedown pin bores during recoil. I elect not to use them as its simply a "feel" thing that in most cases really doesn't provide much mechanical advantage besides maybe creating less carrier tilt. No idea if this is the reason they chose not to use them anymore or it was simply to save some time in machining, but figured I'd share it. Also a note about the other high end manufacturer's - specs that most of the public never bothers to learn about are usually the difference between high end and lower end. DD and Geissele are not immune to problems, the quality from ALL manufacturer's seems to have gone in the toilet lately. Tolerances are failing left and right for those of us that gauge things out. Even some disappointing stuff from BCM that i came across the other day (oversized bolt tail seal). But what you pay for with folks like DD, Geissele, and BCM is a level of QC that gives you a much higher chance of getting a very gas efficient rifle that will not quit on you when negative circumstances compound; fouling, bad ammo, inclement weather/temperature, and exterior dirt. The more efficient your setup is, the longer it will run with one or multiple of those unfavorable conditions affecting it. PSA's, BCA's, Radicals are cheap because they use MIM lower parts kits (metal injection molded - its kin to casting) with crap spring material, they reduce the amount of oversight and standards of QC, no threadlockers, lazy torque specs, large swaths of whats "acceptable" tolerance, many components of which other manufacturers would reject, (saves them money by rejecting less components which means they can build more guns). The result - in the same set of conditions, the cheaper guns will either A. choke out from major gas inefficiency, or B. beat themselves to death and then choke prematurely from material failure due to being overgassed to accommodate the gas inefficiency. Colt may commission 10,000 bolt carrier groups and only keep 2k of them because the rest didn't meet their specification for tolerances. Tolerances such as this are never quantified by 99% of users or even reviewers, but is valuable if you seek to trust your life to a tool. Most say "its a bolt carrier, same as all the others" but thats literally not true. Gas efficiency drives reliability. Colt owns the TDP and tends to honor it better than most. Most others just slap "milspec" on it and then do whatever they want with the spec. One major difference with Colt is that they use the correct size gas port for a given barrel length/dwell time for using QUALITY AMMO and taking into consideration suppressor use. The commercial market oversize's gas ports because they know bubba is gonna try to send weak sauce steel case or 223 remington pressure ammo through the gun with no suppressor and if it doesn't run they are gonna be mad at the manufacturer. So who do you cater to? Most tend to cater to the lowest common denominator.

I have access to a range outdoors, all year in AZ with tons of steel, that’s private. So if you have a new rifle and need to test accuracy w/o fanfare, it’s the place to go. It’s about an hour away from central Phoenix.

The only time I've ever had to use a forward assist was on my Frankenguns while I was still figuring out the buffer weights, gas settings, and general part incompatibilities (forgot to check for M4 feed ramps on the upper). Otherwise, a forward assist is mostly useless.

You're going to get barrel whip regardless. Even custom Remington 700 footprint action bolt guns with huge 10 pound barrels still have barrel whip. That's why some people have started to use barrel tuners (extra weight on the muzzle that you can very precisely move around to tune the harmonic wave). And those guns can be down to as little as 0.1 MOA.
@petedetraglia4776
@petedetraglia4776 10 месяцев назад
0.1 MOA has alot more to do than just the rifle build...I would seriously like to see anyone shooting 0.1 MOA consistently out of an AR platform shoot any platform period...There a very few bolt action rifles and professional shooters that can consistently shoot 0.1 MOA and after the excellent specs and build quality it comes down to shooter, excellent hand made ammo, and most importantly perfect weather conditions...Your basically saying their putting ever bullet in the same hole at 100 yards...I don't think so....
