Great video , as always! Google has everything in his hands to make people merge to ChromeOS and make it the "new windows" popularity wise. IT does a great jog in education, allowing kids to make contact with the (eco)system. With chromeOS flex, with a stronger marketing, could give new life to older hardware AND older people who are not tech savvy ( honestly, it IS a great system for tech newbies). With that , there would be only the enterprise domain left. But as long as you don't use specific windows/macOS programs and don't have strong graphical needs, you should be just fine. Do you think Google doesn't advertise enough? Do the cheap chromebooks leave a bad impression?

I have Lacros enabled, and it only is partially decoupled, because there is no "Chrome is up to date" check mark on the "About Chrome" page, and the Chrome version on my Chrome Book is lagging Chrome Windows and Mac OS versions. So, Chrome updates are still being provided via Chrome OS updates, despite now having separate Chrome://flags and OS://flags pages. UPDATE: I saw my Lacros Chrome browser update independently of Chrome OS yesterday, It still appears to slightly behind the Windows / Mac OS versions, but a lot closer compared to when I first enabled Lacros.

Great showcase and explanation! I liked that you brought up the use of ChromeOS Flex for enterprise users, a very interesting topic. As a Google Workspace consultant, and a fresh Chromebook user myself, I'd love to see more companies and their employees using ChromeOS (Flex). While I think it's still hard to convince companies to switch to Chromebooks, this might be an intermediate solution where employees could get ChromeOS Flex on their existing devices and thus benefit more from Google Workspace as well. What are your thoughts on this? Is the ChromeOS Flex ready for this or when will it be?

So just curious (and maybe a little hopeful) but since lacros is essentially the linux version of chrome customized for maximum Chromebook compatibility does this mean that the linux version of chrome might see some more attention and overall TLC because of this or maybe as a byproduct of this? Or are they not really connected at all? I'm asking because I've heard some people refer to it as just chrome from Linux on Chromebooks...
@Malix_Labs

It's essentially just Chrome on Linux decoupled from ChromeOS. It comes with a huge perf boost, but breaks a good chunk of my Flex OS features.

So I am just trying to get my 🦕brain around this (so please be gentle)... Would I be correct in saying: 1) 'ChromeOS' is the current combined OS & Chrome browser on new Chromebooks. 2) 'ChromeOS Flex' provides a version of ChromeOS for Macs and PCs. 3) Google's plan is to separate out the Chrome browser from the OS in ChromeOS. 4) This independent version of the Chrome browser is called 'Lacros' - and the intention is that it will universally run across Mac, PC's and Chromebooks. Which will help Google keep all browser releases better in sync, as well as produce faster emergency updates when needed. 5) Lacros is therefore NOT a new Chrome operating system (which was my first thought, after seeing it confusingly written as LacrOS). 6) Lacros will also allow Chromebooks with an expired AUE to still keep the browser updated (and therefore more secure).
@AndrewMalcolmson
@AndrewMalcolmson Год назад
1) ChromeOS is and has always meant the software running on Chromebooks (os+browser). Yes to all your other questions.
@Sgt.Lincoln_Osiris
@Sgt.Lincoln_Osiris Год назад
4) The real intention is for Google to be able to update the Chrome browser without having to update the OS to a new version, this is especially useful to fix Chrome browser zero-day vulnerabilities where updates must be delivered fast. Also Chromebooks that's on expired AUE can still have updated Chrome browser.

This is exactly what I was looking for.. I use G Suite at work and I missed separating Profiles, which for example works in Chrome on Windows. Question. Won't the switch to Lacros result in the user's impression of a Chromebook that it will be slower? In the Lacros documentation it is written that the Chrome OS system UI (ash window manager, login screen, etc.) and the web browser are the same binary. Lacross separates this functionality into two binaries. Won't it take up more memory? More CPU resources?
@azmo_

Can someone explain what's so special, now that chrome browser is detached from chrome os?
@Sgt.Lincoln_Osiris
@Sgt.Lincoln_Osiris Год назад
That means that Chrome (the web browser) is no longer updated via the Chrome OS software update. If you have a chromebook that on its end of service life (no longer receiving OS update from Google) you can keep using it with up to date Chrome web browser because the browser itself still receiving updates from Google.

Change to lacros does work. It is very confusing having two settings pages, with the same title etc. One should say Chrome browser and the other ChromeOS. Those two same but different settings pages were there before and always had me confused. Similar layout and titles but different functionality. But screen video functions not usable before or after lacros turned on.

No playstore, no real chrome os. Would like to install it on my main PC. But without Playstore, and also without support for my older NVidia GTX 1650 (for smaller games on Steam), unfortunately nothing for me.

ChromeOS isn't meant to be used for gaming, there is Windows for that. Personally I own a Chromebook and despite I thought I was gonna use Android apps a lot, the only thing I find ChromeOS still doesn't have without the need of Android/Linux are a multiaccount email app and a descent video/audio player. But for everything else PWA and apps created through a shortcut in a new window work exactly as a native app (Skype, Spotify, Office 365, etc) while work way smoother and consume way less battery.
@PJ_BO
@PJ_BO Год назад
@@koken2372 I don't want to have to use Windows anymore. The integration of other Google / Android products in Chrome OS is better. And I don't want to have to use multiple operating systems. Now that you can install Linux apps and Google is also marketing gaming chromebooks, I think that's a use case. The option to install Steam already exists. It doesn't have to be triple A gaming for me, but at least the support for the right GPU should be given. Regarding Android apps: I use Spotify, Google Photos (because of the dark mode), Whatsapp and Telegram on my girlfriend’s Chromebook. The web versions of the latter two don't appeal to me.

how is....."no android apps " anywhere near the same as chrome os?...seriously are you this desperate to make content so you can rake in youtube money?........you are making a video to say chromes browser is sperate from chrome os......which it isnt since you are opening your chrome browser and enabling a flag........so NOT separate from chromes browser.......not to mention the obvious fact that we all have know for yrs that you can use the chrome browser on non chrome os devices......ie the windpws pc im using now and watching youtube on.......

U really don’t know anything about different between chrome os and chrome os flex, the separation is mean for the browser can update without the os update, so google can send the latest browser update without full os update and user can get the patch ASAP

Great video. Now to be an ass. I can't stand it when you watch a video and the person who is representing the channel mentions a older video and then says "I'll link that video in the description" then you look in the description and the only fuggin links are to their merch store. Shame. I was going to check out the flags video you mentioned. And no I refuse to go to your channel and scour through hundreds of videos trying to find it. Nope you get a 👎 and I'll put in a search query on feature flags and maybe your video will be amongst the top and maybe I'll see it. But you took a guaranteed view and gave it to someone else due to a unfulfilled promise (that there would be a link). be better.
