Forget about the for-ghetti, just twirl the spaghetti onto your fork by pointing and holding the prongs down against the plate instead of up in the air.

The Unitool is perfect for precisely one type of situation: you’ve just moved out of your parents’ place and need to stock your new kitchen with tools. The alternative is buying one of those big, cheap kitchen toolkits that come with the worst version of every tool. I think someone out on their own for the first time would benefit greatly from just buying one thing that’s sort of good at a variety of tasks and then adding more specific tools as needed. That way they save space and their first tool stays useful until every last one of its functions has been replaced, and even then it makes a great backup for when the other tools are dirty.
@FireMageLayn

This. It's not good, but it's serviceable while you look for your own tools that fit your preferences.
@Mgamerz
@Mgamerz Год назад
Seems like it'd be decent for camping or tossing in a camper
@danielleanderson6371
@danielleanderson6371 Год назад
@@Mgamerz Maybe, but I don’t think its compact size is that useful, considering what you get from it. You’re probably already carrying a much better knife, and all the other features can be covered with a big, metal slotted spoon, one that’s likely still smaller than the Unitool. You can flip, scoop, and strain with a slotted spoon, and any liquid you might want to bring with the food you scoop can likely just be poured into whatever receptacle directly from its original container. That just leaves the rubber spatula part, which is definitely the least useful function for camping, unless you’re eating scrambled eggs, in which case you probably have a mini-fridge or an ice chest or something. Those things take up way more room than a rubber spatula, so if space is a major concern you’re probably not doing eggs. Really for camping I think you could get by with just a knife, a wide slotted spoon, and maybe a pair of tweezers for removing pin bones from fish, assuming you don’t have a multi-tool with built-in pliers. Plus of course whatever vessel you plan on cooking in, likely a skillet of some kind, and something to start a fire. Then you’re all set, as far as cooking is concerned.
@danielleanderson6371
@danielleanderson6371 Год назад
@@FireMageLayn Especially for ten dollars, you really can’t ask for a better starter tool at that price point. I think I spent at least twenty dollars on my crappy starter kit from Walmart, and very few of those tools still see use in my kitchen.

Traditional way is with a bowl ladle (primitive spoon). The bowl part actually holds over a cup of liquid. You add 1/3 bowl of tomato based sauce and the rest is meat, spaghetti, and cheese. Takes roughly 5 bites/gulps of it to finish. Trust me, I love pizza (Italian?)

The advantage of the knife part of the flipper spatula thingy is that with non stick pans you will scratch if you use a metal knife, but not with the non metal knife side of the tool. So when cooking with non stick pans, it works better than a metal knife at not damaging the pan.

Sorry but … who twists spaghetti onto their fork, from the plate, with the fork horizontal?! 😵 I’ve always stuck the fork vertically into the pasta then turn (moving it a little diagonal if needed) to get a decent amount onto it before lifting (turning it horizontal at this point) to my mouth. That way the spaghetti doesn’t get around the neck/handle of the fork.

Hey just a suggestion: in future videos when trying out a “whisk” I think it may be more informative to time how long it takes to turn cream into whipped cream, then we could compare times. It’s a bit more illustrative than just breaking up some eggs. Thanks, great video!
@VeganAtheistWeirdo
@VeganAtheistWeirdo Год назад
Have you seen the way James "whisks" by hand? By no means am I suggesting he's alone in his technique, but if you can't get your wrist into it and maximize the amount of air added to the cream (or eggs, etc.) with every stroke, you're never going to get there without an electric beater or a mixer. These products wouldn't make a difference for the purpose of whipping without an actual whipping technique. Edit: 8:38 - 8:41 Notice how much motion he's having to put into his arm to get anything to happen. Also, that's a very small volume for that huge bowl, which isn't doing him any favors. And it's gone straight from heavy cream to almost-butter, look closely. There's nothing light or airy about those results. Maybe he has a friend that can hand whisk/whip who might do the test next time, though.
@DickWigglin
@DickWigglin 9 месяцев назад
The time it takes to make whipped cream varies, though, so to "compare times" makes absolutely no sense.
@oliverfenn8489
@oliverfenn8489 9 месяцев назад
@@DickWigglin if you took one single jug of heavy cream, and split it into two identical bowls, and whipped it with two different spatulas, if one whipped the cream twice as fast that would be interesting to note. Breaking some eggs is not interesting. Anything can break some eggs.
@DickWigglin
@DickWigglin 9 месяцев назад
@@oliverfenn8489 Again... "The time it takes to make whipped cream varies". It takes like 10-15 minutes of continuous, vigorous whisking to achieve whipped cream, and in order to be consistent with the method you want him to employ, he has to be able to actually whisk vigorously, and at the same speed, every single time, making accurate comparisons nearly impossible.

I highly recommend the blending fork if you're a baker like me. For biscuit and bread doughs, or even looser batter, this fork blends butter/shortening into flour far better than a spoon (wooden or metal). Easier to clean and keeps your hands cleaner. I love mine.
@jpbaley2016
@jpbaley2016 Год назад
Wow, someone needs to teach you how to hold a fork to twirl spaghetti. I get a bit of spaghetti and put the points of the tines against a spoon so it’s easier to twirl small amounts. For larger amounts put the tine points directly against the plate. To whisk with a fork, you don’t stir. You hold the utensil like a soup spoon, rotating and lifting it a bit to froth the food. The unitool cutting edge would work better on the front edge instead of the side. It would allow you to cut items in the pot or pan or even a grilled sandwich on the plate. Probably would help you get underneath food to flip it.

The for-ghetti fork is one I wouldn't waste money on it. If you can't get the spaghetti to stay on your fork, the next best thing to do is to cut your spaghetti into shorter strands. That's what my mom use to do! I like the blending fork, from your video it looked like it could be useful, although, I would prefer a better quality one, too. The other tools didn't look all that useful. When looking at my kitchen tools that I already have, I have way too many and need to declutter them and donate the unused ones. With that being said, I will probably wait on getting a blending fork for now. Thanks for the video, James!!!!

Take a tablespoon and a fork and twirl your spaghetti on the spoon. I know Italians do it on the plate but I like the spoon method.

moms would typically cut the spaghetti for their kids but as an adult you gotta get into the twirling game! it's the entire fun of spaghetti. but please use a spoon or push down on the side of the plate. mid-air twirling is ILLEGAL.

I got that uni tool thing and at first hated it so much, but now it's what I grab for so many things. It's kinda odd to hold at first but it works so well and the only thing I use as it works well to brown beef and then turns into a spoon when you add sauces and stuff.. I recommend it and just need to give it a bit to feel comfortable in the hand.

Nothing like creating a problem that doesn't exist to market a fork. Who twirls their pasta like that?! Get a spoon, scoop the pasta onto fork, spin the pasta filled fork onto spoon, and there's no movement. You don't need that freaky fork.

OMG where did you learn to eat spaghetti like that? Twirl it on the plate (fork pointed down, pressed against the plate), then lift when you have what you want on the fork to eat! I demand a re-test.

The for-ghetti is literally what I was imagining the other day as I struggled to eat a plate of bucatini 😲 the extra thick noodles just didn't want to wrap and stay on the fork at all. Felt like rage-quitting by cutting it up and eating it with a spoon! Never has an issue with normal spaghetti , but that bucatini was stubborn! That price is insane though. I'll just stick to using a spoon to help the noodles onto the fork next time.

My parents have the Joseph Joseph elevated spatula. I can't say I have seen them use it a whole bunch of times but they got it specifically to keep the counter clean when cooking. It looks a bit like the Unitool without the cutting edge or the spoon part. Looks a bit strange compared to the other more traditional spatulas and spoons they have in their drawer. I was able to recognize it by the shape and color. Of all the tools you showed here, I like the functionality of the blending fork the best. Looks like a giant back scratcher to me but seems to work the best of all the items you reviewed.

These multi-purpose tools are almost invariably never used for more than one or two. They are usually okay-at-best for most of the purposes, and people either already have a better tool for those purposes or will at some point buy a better one. I'm quite sure, for example, that seldom will anyone ever use this thing to cut anything - everyone has a serviceable knife at home. I've long learnt not to trust multi-purpose tools. Like the vast majority of Swiss army knives blades are seldom if ever used :)

Hey, James, have you done Meat Tenderizers yet? I just got one from Amazork the other day and it. is. Awesome!! It's one of the newer styles that has a spring-loaded deal to keep the blades 'covered' - probably a safety feature for in drawers. Anyway, the new ones have tiny blade instead of the old-fashioned spikes. I paid about $7 for a small one and it is top quality.

I very rarely buy items reviewed or recommended by others, but he did a video on the Click & Carry for carrying grocery bags and it's been amazing. Never fails that I swear I'm not going to buy a lot at the store...but I do. And while I only have 15 steps up to my apartment, I still don't want to do more than one trip. The Click & Carry makes me look like a pack mule and the heavy bags usually make me halfway throw them on the kitchen floor when I get in (sorry, my neighbors...) but I do get everything in one go! Not had to make two trips since the day I got them. Especially great on those lazy days where maybe I stop and get fast food before coming home, not wanting to shop and cook in the same day. Also, getting a large, reusable bag to put individual grocery bags inside of, and then putting that on the clip helps a lot with the swinging weight. I shove my purse inside of the bag as well. I had been wanting bag clips for a while but none looked as good as the Click & Carry, so while sappy to all hell, I'm truly happy James reviewed them and that I bought some. I'll probably get a set for my mom as well as she has to walk about the same distance to her front door as I do to get up to my apartment. Bet she'd appreciate them.
