Check out Cassey's Video! • Day 1: Butterfly Bridg...
New Merch Launched! store.dftba.com/collections/p...
Cassey and I investigate the biomechanics of butts. What activates your butt muscles more, running or squatting? How effective are bridges as a butt workout? How much can we change the shape of our bodies with exercise?
Huge thanks to Dr. Rowley for having us invade his lab for the day! You can check him out on facebook here / kmichaelrowley

What? No deadlifts? Also when doing bodyweight squats there's a phenomenon sometimes called "glute amnesia" (not an official term but I've heard it being thrown around and is quite a fitting description) where unless you focus on it, the body just puts the entire load on the quads because it simply doesn't need the intense power that the glutes can provide (our bodies are actually quite smart when it comes to minimising effort and energy spent). If the other girl was to be recorded for the squat she would most likely show more glute activation in it than when running
@jesseschilling
@jesseschilling 4 года назад
Trap-bar deadlifts for the win.
@1MarkKeller
@1MarkKeller 4 года назад
Most people don't drive with the glutes first on their squats. Just as you said, the quads end up doing the work and the glutes take a nap.
@hooplehead1019
@hooplehead1019 4 года назад
@@1MarkKeller What you guys dont realize is that the quads and glutes have different functions, which only can be replaced with each other a small degree: the quads do knee extension whereas the glutes do hip extension. It gets a bit more complicated with inhibitions and insufficiencies, but thats it in short. So you want hip extension for glute activation. And therefore hip extension exercises especially with bent knees (when hamstring contribution is low and therefore hip extension relies heavily on the glutes and a bit accuctors) outperform squats. Like deadlifts, hip thrusts.
@michaelangeloevans2722
@michaelangeloevans2722 4 года назад
that sounds like bro science.
@danpolta8759
@danpolta8759 4 года назад
@@hooplehead1019 Absolutely. Give me anyone with "glute amnesia," and I can grow their glutes without any corrective exercises. Hip extension, hip external rotation, hip abduction, and posterior pelvic tilt are movements that will use your glutes no matter what. EMG data is useful, but the comment section is misinterpreting it.

Hi, really interesting episode! I just got an idea for an episode request! "What electrocution does with the body", and what difference current, frequency, duration and voltage does (I'm an electrician, so personally I know, but far too few know what to be careful with and what's "safe")

Thank you so much for this tie-in video for the #100glutechallenge I love working out but I also love science behind it, so this informational side of it was just awesome!

I'm about two years late to this party and am not sure if anyone already mentioned this. But, to elaborate on the sprinter large booty vs distance runner flat booty. A sprinting athlete has different mechanics during a sprint than a distance runner on a long run. The variable mechanics causes a different demand for the muscles recruited. Secondly, because of the distance and time spent active during these different movement modalities the energy demand on the muscles will be different, aerobic vs anaerobic. This variance in energy demands causes muscle fibers to adapt differently and become more fast twitch dominant vs slow twitch dominant. Typically, a fast twitch muscle fiber dominant athlete will have more muscular hypertrophy as a byproduct than an athlete that is slow twitch dominant and higher aerobic capacity. Also, it's worth mentioning that during compounding movements like squats, muscle fiber recruitment can be higher if load/resistance is added and the mechanics/form of the exercise is executed properly. Also, there exist other factors during the executed exercise that can alter muscle fiber recruitment like angle/ROM of movement, variance in speed of execution of exercise, time under tension (holding position), and focus on concentric or eccentric phases. Great video!

Yo Dianna doesn't mess around; if there's ever a zombie apocalypse, someone's gonna be real lucky to have her on the team.

That’s cool! 🏄‍♀️🌊 I’m not cool enough, but I like to dive. Maybe do something with ideal gas laws and diving. That would be educational for the kids and fun to do. I would be scared of white 🦈 in CA tho. Maybe do that when you go to Hawaii. 🌺

good thing you put invented and mankind in quotation marks because the behaviour is seen in cephalopod's and plants
