Tetrahedral kite, first flight

I came across images of Alexander Graham Bell's Tetrahedral kites last year and have wanted to make one ever since. I finally got around to it. I made the frame with wooden dowels and plastic tubing and the sails are mylar sheeting. This is it's first test fight.

Congratulations on you splendid kite. I made one, about the same size, years ago. it was quite heavy as it was made out of garden cane, string, bin liners and sticky tape. It needed a stiff breeze to fly but was extremely stable. It would never crash, just float to earth like a parachute. The only problem was that it didn't fold away so took up a lot of space in the living room.

Thanks Robert, your right they are a very stable kite. I made connectors out of plastic tubing so it is easily dismantled. I made a kite 4 times this size by adding 3 more 4 cell kites to this one, there is a short video of it on RU-vid called "Big tetrahedral kite 'flying'"

I made a box kite out of dowel and a bin liner and tape. I was making a right mess of taping the bin liner plastic so for the other end I just wrapped wide tape round and round the dowels. One dowel snapped near the corner but it still flew. I took it apart and reused the dowels. Made a bigger uglier one out of green garden canes and tape. It's only going to fly once. Making a tetrahedral kite out of Subway straws....

I've dispensed with the Subway straws and used really rigid paper ones. I made a 10 cell one which flew badly earlier. I think I chose a bad spot to fly it. I've almost finished making a miniature version which has been extremely fiddly. I've seen and knotted through the straws and taped the sails to the straws and thread. I've had to see the corners of each cell to prevent the straws from rotating, to aid attaching the sails. I will be extremely pleased if it flies! Yes I'd love a 3D printer.

awesome stuff! if you like making things, be sure to look a little into Buckminster Fuller's Synergetics. You will learn a great deal about why it's a good place to start making structure out of tetrahedra! (you can find a great video with the title "Synergetics" here on youtube, where Bucky gives a great basic introduction into his findings)

Any idea what the wind speed was this day? I've read tetrahedral kites require a lot of wind, and it certainly SOUNDS windy over the microphone.

Sorry Chuck, I’m not sure, it was quite strong, maybe 40km/h with gusts up to 50. It was way too much wind for this kite though, you can see in the video the dowels I used to make the frame are distorting under the pressure. I have had it up in much lighter wind, like 20km/h and it goes up real easy and just sits there.

What material was used for this kite?

Hello, the material used is Mylar, it's what the silver emergency blankets are made from. The framework is wooden dowels and the dowels are joined using plastic tubing.
