Tevan's 1972 XS2 Resto-Mod Cafe' Build... First Ride

This is Tevan's ride. Tevan came to work for me when he was 17, and got the itch to build a bike. So we found this 72' XS2 sitting in the kudzu at a friends house, struck a deal and drug it home. It was too gnarly for a restoration, but was perfect for a Cafe' build. Tevan built the engine to stock specs, except using a rephased crank and cam, and a pamco 277 Ignition. Then using a Hugh's HandBuilt PMA system, he was able to delete the battery, and set it up as a kick-only engine. He built the pipes using a Pandemonium custom exhaust kit, and a set of swap meet Bub mufflers. The swingarm is braced up, the front forks are late model 35mm with machining done to keep the OEM steering damper from the original bike. Tank was modded to use standard 1/4 NPT petcocks, and got a new fuel cap. The seat is custom made for the bike, and the tail section is built from 2 harley gas tanks we had laying around. Front fork brace and custom rearset controls are all nickel plated. Dual 18" wheels laced by Tevan himself, and rolling on Pirelli tires... Lectron 34mm High Velocity carbs feed the factory long rod engine.
It was cold as all getout, about 28 degrees when we shot this... And yes, maybe one day I'll learn how to edit a video, but I'm to busy playing with these ol' XS650's for that - haha...
We've still got some tuning to do, hard to test and tune when it's that cold out. But overall, it's a killer bike and should run just as good as it looks when we are done with it... I'm proud of Tevan, how many 19 year old's have put such heart and soul into something and have it come out this good...

That was great! When he stood on th kickstarter to get a better look around the parking lot I laughed out loud. ;) 1972 XS2 was my first bike until the side of a car. Now it's a 74 TX650. Love these girls, good for Tevan!

Nice build. Tevan has too much faith in that kickstand when starting it . Scared the hell out of me.

Honestly I am not a huge fan of the cafe racer parallel twins, but I am a huge fan of fine craftsmanship and emerging bikers and bike builders. Good job man! Great looking bike!

If there is only one reason to rephrase that engine, it is definitely the sound! It just sounds so effing GOOD! You have inspired me for my next project!

A really good mentor to work with a lurpy kid like that. That kid belongs on the video games and here he is building one of the nicest custom cafe racers around. Good for him! There's hope for everyone! Now you just got to get him to not be such a goof ball and he might have a good thing going!

Finally got an XS650 again after 20yrs :) Got a 4LS suzy front brake ready here for her. (Her : don't know why but they're all female to me) But first comes first, the engine is stubborn, carbs need ultrasonic attention , starter doesn't engage (as usual) swingarm needs bronze bushings, rear shocks are dead, front legs sweating, etc etc. Will post in a couple of months (I hope, that is..) Hope you're doing fine, have good rides !

IMPORTANT!!!! Most XS/TX 650 owners of bikes made in 1970-72 DO NOT know they do not have the hardened valve faces and seats, so you must run a Lead substitute in them. These were made before the Oil Embargo of 1973 and designed to run on regular Gasoline with Lead formulated into the fuel to lubricate the valve train,( that is what made the tail pipes burn White). NOT Unleaded. The service manual shows the part numbers starting with the TX650's. 1973 and newer do not need to worry about this problem. IF YOU DO NOT ADD THE LEAD SUBSTITUTE YOU RUN A HIGH RISK OF BURNING OUT YOUR VALVES! Good luck, Larry Beach

So how are those 34 Lectrons with powerjets workin? I used to drag race bikes and ran lectrons. A little bigger lol. Just curious if you ended up over carburated? I loved mine but never really got to try any drivability with em. Strictly high idle and wot. Thanks in advance Hugh! And beautiful bike Tevan!
@punkskalar
@punkskalar 8 лет назад
I used them on my personal bike for several years. It seems that bike was the only one I could ever get dialed in, but it would load up a bit on long idle periods. On Tevan's bike, with the longer rods and small bore, they were definitely more carb than needed, and we had to keep idle way up around 2K rpm or so. We ended up swapping them out for some VM's for better rideability.

Bike looks good but all the dust water e.t.c from the rear Tyre will be going all over the air filters as no rear hugger or guard

Too bad you did all this work on a XS early wobbly frame. The frames '74 and up are a LOT stiffer. I suppose you guys won't race it, but I would never touch an early one myself.
@punkskalar
@punkskalar 8 лет назад
+Berke Beenhouwer The early bikes definitely weren't as stiff as the late model frames. We beefed it up a bit here and there, adding bracing where we thought it could benefit. It was his first build, he's run it pretty hard since then. He still loves it. The 35mm front end helps a ton, as does the fork brace. The swingarm being stiffened has helped quite a bit compared to my rubber noodle XS1 - haha

punkskalar Dumb, didn't notice the fork ;) well yes that helps a lot . "Rubber noodle XS1" lmao ;) Any new XS projects coming ?
