I watched the whole 1 hr and 20 minute town hall meeting. He did not REFUSE to schedule former Big 12 colleagues. He said that he needed to see how the SEC schedule fleshes out. That in the near future, it won’t happen. They have big home and home games scheduled for the next decade-ish. That means that the home and home game type series with former Big 12 teams will not be scheduled for a while. He did not say never. Just clarifying

As a Michigan fan I cannot wait for the Longhorns to come to Ann Arbor, even if it'll be a very tough game. Further, I cannot wait for Michigan to go to Austin in '27. And sandwiched in between my Wolverines go to Norman in '25 and have the Sooners at home in '26. It'll be a bloodbath, but these huge September games between the bluest of the blue bloods is what makes College Football awesome and unique. Go Blue and September can't come soon enough!

I see both perspectives from a financial point of view... (I'm a TCU fan) what I'm more concerned with is creating a built in imbalance in the sport whereby the blue bloods don't have to take on any difficult opponents away from home ever. Much like the SEC only playing 8 conference games, this keeps their teams in the top 25 for longer (thus more likely to make the playoff) and builds a further perception that they're somehow better without having to actually play competitive games in difficult locations like everyone else does. At this point I just wish they would create their own league with their own championships so we can all move on.
@chuckwest7045
@chuckwest7045 4 месяца назад
The SEC has the most teams in the Top 25 because they have the most OOC wins over ranked teams and I can prove that. It has nothing to do with an 8 or a 9 game conference schedule. "....without having to play competitive games in difficult locations like everyone else does..." Have you looked at Big Twelve OOC schedules in recent years? Or was losing to South Alabama and Wyoming too much for you guys last year? And who can forget the Big Twelve going 0-3 vs. the Sun Belt in 2020?
@mattclark6482
@mattclark6482 4 месяца назад
I didn't say the 8 game schedule had to do with OOC success, I said it is a built in advantage in the same way as not playing home and home against OOC opponents is an advantage. Bear Bryant was very insistent he didn't want to play ranked teams back to back. He knew that's where football teams are the most vulnerable. Modern coaches and ADs are just as aware of this fact and having the 8 game schedule allows the SEC to throw in a cream puff so you're not forced to play tough SEC opponents in succession like other conferences. Why do you think Alabama played Chattanooga and Tennessee played UConn in November??? It certainly wasn't to get themselves mentally tough for the CFP.
@chuckwest7045
@chuckwest7045 4 месяца назад
@@mattclark6482 And I never said that it was an advantage for OOC success. I said that it wasn't the reason that the SEC has so many teams ranked in the Top 25 which is exactly what you were implying. Tennessee playing UConn in November isn't the reason that they ran Iowa off the field on New Year's Day.
@mattclark6482
@mattclark6482 4 месяца назад
@@chuckwest7045 What I said is the SEC teams are ranked higher for "LONGER" meaning deeper in the season. If it's two weeks before the end of the season and there are three SEC teams with one loss (largely because they haven't played one another) and all the other conferences have a hodge podge of 1 and 2 loss teams at the top of their conferences the SEC teams are absolutely going to be ranked higher than the 2 loss teams in that moment. I doubt anyone would argue that point. Furthermore, I am suggesting that being ranked higher for longer creates an imbalance in the minds of voters that will almost certainly favor SEC teams (largely because people have only short term memory these days). You're acting like I said this is some massive advantage that would completely flip the rankings in totally different directions ( I never said that). I'm just saying it is a small built in advantage that will skew things to favor the SEC over time and anyone that was interested in a level playing field would not allow these imbalances to continue.

The 9 game conference schedule really does make non-con scheduling a little difficult. Every other year you’re rotating either 5 home/4 away or 4 home/5 away. So the years you have 5 away you really have to maximize your non-conference schedule to get more home games. Sadly the P5 all want more home games, it just is the way it is. Unless the NCAA increases the season to allow for 13 regular season games home-homes with other P5 teams will just decrease especially if the SEC and ACC all go to 9 games. You’ll just end up with historical rivalry games like Iowa-ISU, Florida-FSU-Miami, Georgia-Georgia Tech, Louisville-Kentucky and South Carolina-Clemson that will probably be the lone yearly exceptions.

Fellas, you say right now that no self-respecting team would agree to a road game with Texas in this example. That may be true for a year or three, but if they want to stay relevant and have meaningful schedules against the top teams, they will have to. That's not just for SEC opponents, that's Big 10 opponents too. Merging or partnering with the ACC won't cut it. If I'm the Big 12 or the ACC, I'm very nervous about the SEC/Big 10 partnership that excluded the ACC and Big 12. The 34 teams of the SEC and Big 10 are on the verge of splitting away to their own league or division, and out of those 34, I think 24-26 of them are the top revenue programs in the NCAA. You have to go down to #17 to find a non-Sec, non-Big 10 school. The Big 12 and ACC are about to become the new G5. So...if the Big 12 wants to hang onto pride, then there are plenty of current G5s that will take a one game payday to be on TV against the Big 10/SEC. Meanwhile, enjoy Utah vs Louisville as your big game. (I doubt FSU and Clemson will be in the ACC much longer )

With the P2 consolidation and likely additional conference games, it will be increasingly difficult and a decreasing incentive to play difficult ooc games. I good faith estimate that the BIG12 teams will only be able to replace ~33% of the lost vs. big brand games. That will also go for the ACC after it depletes out. After the dust settles, I suspect that Tier 1 P2s will only be able to schedule non-P2s if mandated by law, required by contractual obligations, or specifically exempted.

Is this any kind of big surprise? As a UT-ex, I can tell you that the reason for my school moving to the SEC was to play in a tough conference. Over the years, our non-conference football schedule has featured at least one really tough non-conference opponent like Ohio State, LSU Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Oregon, etc. We played the schools to beef up the strength of the schedule. Next season we will face MIchigan on the road. Other than a trip down memory lane, why would we want to play at Lubbock, Waco, or Fort Worth. We have nothing to gain. Despite the contempt and vitriolic behavior displayed by Big XII fans against Texas and OU since both announce their intentions to seek a spot in the SEC, I hold no ill will against Big XII folks.I am a native Texan. I have fond memories of the days of the old SWC and the BIg XII. I wish everyone continuing in the Big XII all the best. If at some future date, Texas hosts a football game against Tech, TCU or Baylor, I would enjoy the matchup. Old rivalries die hard.

My man, that rule is already in place and has been for a while. I don't think you know enough about the subject. Since you seem heavily invested in this 9 conference game thing... Riddle me this, when did the Pac12, Big12 & B1G go to 9 conference games? Once you know that you'll notice that they didn't switch to 9 conference because of competitive integrity. It was negotiated in their TV deal, they went after extra money, and got it. The B1G loves boasting that they make more than the SEC in tv revenue. But it's only been recently that people have been complaining about the 8 game conferences. The SEC will switch to 9 when they get fairly compensated for it. ESPN refused to pay more for that extra conference game, so the SEC voted to stay at 8. Calling ESPN's bluff, they'll try to negotiate again in 2026. And Michigan haven't play ANY P5 OOC games for the last 2 years, not just last year. Nobody is doing what Florida is doing, playing 11 P5 games in 2024 regular season (Florida St, Miami & UCF in OOC). My LSU Fighting Tigers play 2 new B1G teams next year (USC & UCLA)....

Oh by the way the Big 10 has been playing 9 game schedules off and on since the 1970s long before the big money contracts. The Big Ten all routinely played the Pac 12 one game a year. Also while I acknowledged Michigans three cupcakes, you don’t acknowledge that many SEC teams in fact significantly more than Big 10 teams played three cupcakes as well. Including all the highest ranked teams in the SEC like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Missouri who all played three cupcakes schedules. @@matthewhuszarik4173 my man, I was replying to your original post. About requiring a mandatory P5 opponent & your Michigan statement. I felt you may not have been informed of the order of operations of things. That's why I explained the SEC's 8-9 game hold up. I didn't make excuses, stand up for, or justify those SEC cup cake games. EVERYBODY plays them. I personally don't like them. Personally I would love a P5 only schedule, and play/pay those lower tier schools for a teams spring games (instead of teams playing themselves, 1's vs 1's, 2's vs 2's...). But I made it a point for you to look up when each conference changed to a permanent 9 game conference schedule. To signify that the Pac12 (who was first), the Big12 (2nd), and the B1G (3rd) decided to chase money by going to a 9 conference game schedule. The SEC and ACC has changed NOTHING (I haven't heard you say anything about the ACC yet by the way, I guess since you hold the SEC to such a high standard... I get it). They kept it consistent! But now after 9 game conferences reaped the benefits of all that extra money, they have the audacity to complain about our schedule. That's because people forgot, they weren't making those accusations in 2017, 18, or 19 (the B1G at least). Because it was too fresh, and they were making more money than the mighty SEC. I guess now, you might feel like it wasn't worth it or something, because since ANY P5 conference switched to a 9 game conference, they only have 1 title to show for it (this year). And because the SEC and ACC have had more titles since then, you magically want to blame us. Like I said, the audacity! The SEC's ability to think for itself and not follow trends must be maddening! So now that they are going to 16 teams and it makes sense for them to go to 9, those salty conferences want us to give in to the name calling (which would be BEYOND weak) and prematurely go to 9 games without compensation is idiotic. And I'll give you credit for the UCF on Florida's schedule, but they were still the top, or the top 2 G5 teams when it was scheduled. So even if you don't give them P5 status just yet (I don't blame you), that game still wouldn't be classified as a cup cake. You said, and I quote.... " B1G all routinely played the Pac12 one game a year" did that not apply for Michigan in 2022 or 2023? Who did Iowa play this year? Did Penn St play a Pac12 team? Minnesota? Illinois? Perdue? Indiana?.... maybe it's ever other year? All I'm trying to get at is... how can y'all be mad or have problems with us? Why, because y'all don't like the results of your own actions?! That's crazy and hypocritical to me. I apologize for LONG reply.

@matthewhuszarik4173 my man, I was replying to your original statement, about requiring an P5 OOC game. And your statement about Michigan's schedule. I did not make excuses for, stand up for, or attempt to explain the SEC's weak OOC. And I never will, because I'm not a fan of them. Personally I'd prefer a P5 only schedule, and to play/pay those lower tier games as our spring game (instead of teams playing themselves, 1v1's & 2v2's). But EVERYONE has cup cake games, I don't really even care about that. You said the B1G plays the Pac12 once a year... who did Michigan play in 2022 or 2023? The list is shorter for the teams that actually played Pac12 teams. And why is playing the weakest (failed) P5 conference a brag? I tried to convey my point by allowing you to look up how/why these conferences started playing 9 games. The Pac12, Big12 & B1G decided to change things and chase money. The SEC & ACC didn't change anything (you haven't said anything about the ACC, I guess the mighty SEC is held to a higher standard... I get it). And now after reaping the benefits ($) of the 9 conference games, and since NO team that played 9 conference games has EVER won a championship until Michigan this year. The greedy people chasing money decides it's the SEC's fault! I guess the SEC being able to think for themselves and not follow trends is maddening for some. And side note, Michigan wasn't the first 9 gamer to win a title. That honor goes to Alabama during the covid year when the SEC played 10 conference games. Remember when the B1G wanted to cancel their season? So basically you're mad at consistency. And with the SEC going to 16 teams, now it makes sense to switch to 9 games. I'll give you credit for the Florida vs UCF, they were G5 when it was scheduled. But they were the best or 2nd best G5 team when it was scheduled, but still wouldn't have been classified as a cup cake game. LSU still scheduled UCLA & USC in 2024, you were oddly quiet about that. But please get the hippocracy in order! B1G guys bragging about making more money (trying to make yourself look better for Florida St), then in the next breath complaining about the SEC doing the same thing since 1992! Objectivity why would the SEC have changed anything? They win more titles than anyone. If it ain't broke, there's no need to fix it. Until now, when it benefits us with 16 teams.

@@tremoore9831 Michigan quit playing 10 Power Five games a couple years ago when they saw it hurt them more than it helped them make it to the post season and apparently they were right. They won the National Championship only playing 9 Power Five games at the same time the top six ranked teams in the SEC all only played 9 Power Five schools. Ohio St. the last three years played 10 Power Five games. Was that a factor in them losing to Michigan all three years when they had only lost to them once going back to 2004 while they were both playing 10 Power Five games? It seems like Michigan decided to follow the SEC example and it paid off for them. So unless the NCAA mandates it, don’t expect Big 10 teams to continue to play a 10th Power Five game unless it becomes mandatory across the board. It just isn’t in their interests. Not only do they lose revenue in the lost home game every other year, but it will make it harder for them to reach the post season. You only need one or two games at most against highly ranked teams to get into the post season playing anymore just reduces your chances.

I grew tired of playing games against the remaining (and new) BigXII teams who treated the Longhorns as their Super Bowl and Texas just sleepwalked through games with teams they weren't excited about. I think the Big XII will be happy to have us gone and we'll be happy to play other large state University teams. Texas usually plays fairly well when they are motivated. Looking ahead, I think Coach Sarkisian has them on track and the fans are excited for the future.

@massivedynamic2339 texas is what? 1 of about 10 schools to win a championship in the last 20 year's. Thats pretty good. And from 2000 to 2010 the big 12 was as good if not better than any other conference.

@josephrenfro6071 LSU has won 3 with 3 different coaches. Bama has several. Georgia has a couple. Florida has a couple. Texas is going to get handled in the SEC. Hell, they were just average in the big12.

@massivedynamic2339 dude. Texas record in big 12 was 158-79 (not avg). Texas record vs sec is 192-94-4 (not avg) Texas vs all the teams you like to blow in the sec? UT vs bama 8-2-1 UT vs lsu 9-8-1 UT vs Florida 2-0-1 UT vs Georgia 4-1 Texas will be just fine. Just worry about your own school. And stop blowing the sec. Because texas is joining and thats way to big of a hog to fit in your mouth Texas has also won 2 out of the last 3 directors cup "best athletic department award"

The more obvious reason for TX not to play Big12 teams going forward (and especially not at home) as a non-conference game is that TX will already have a tough enough schedule to deal with in conference. WTF would they want to add in non-con Big12 teams that will consider that game their super bowl and add even more difficulty to their schedule? They already scheduled games like Michigan as non-con games so I don't think you can justify it IMO. F Brett Yormark, the sand Aggies and the tortillas they rode in on.
