This is a perfect example of why I _loathe_ tipping culture. Make the minimum wage a living wage, permit no exceptions or exclusions, and put tipping in the rear-view permanently.

I used to deliver pizzas for Pizza Hut a long time ago. They changed the customer a $2.50 delivery charge but only gave us $0.67 of that, which encouraged the customer to tip less since they assumed that we actually got the delivery charge. Whenever they asked me if we got that, and I told them we only got $0.67, they would always give me a higher tip and be disappointed with the company for their deceptive fees.

Decades ago I was a dishwasher in a restaurant and the waitresses put all their tip money into a bowl and split it. So tipping one waitress for great service doesn't necessarily go to that person.

Tips are not guaranteed. If you want a decent wage, get a different job...

I don't understand how a country that says you have the right to have a gun doesn't firstly give you the right to have a fair hourly wage. In Australia a tip is given as a reward or appreciation for excellent service, also for the quality of what was sold (which is unfairly totally outside the control of the servers).

I visited Japan a few years ago, and there is no tipping there. It was a beautiful thing. Also, the waiter would come to the table, give you the bill, take a step back and wait for you to present your payment. There's none of this disappearing for 20 minutes after placing the bill on your table. Very efficient. I wish the United States would do this.

Oh, and in civilised countries, displayed price in shop is all taxes included too. Maybe worth a change here too.

No matter where you lean on politics, tipping should not be mandatory in services. No one should feel pressured to tip just because the server is dependent on it. We should instead pressure the business owners to pay a proper and fair wage to employees. No one should be in a sour mood after getting dirty looks from servers for not tipping. This is even happening at fast food restaurants like Subway, Starbucks and Chipotle * Edit: I realized that I didn’t present my argument correctly here so i will further elaborate: * Im not saying that I wont tip. I will tip people if they go out if their way to give me an outstanding experience that will be hard to feel anywhere else. It should be a reward, not expectation for employees and we shouldn’t have them depend on tips to make ends meet. Especially since these fast food services are often consistent with their products with barely anything standing out.

Tipping has gotten out of hand. We’ve stopped going out because of it. And, when I say “we”, I mean I’ve stopped taking my family of 7 out weekly for dinner because I got sick of the ever increasing prices for ever decreasing quality and then still having to tip 15% to waitstaff busting ass off just to survive. I have solved the problem of tipping culture. I just don't eat out, or visit those types of establishments, anymore. I'm tired of the entire process.... I don't feel the need to tip but if I keep giving businesses like this my money, the process will never change. So I have removed myself from the equation. I am quite happy making food at home.

Tipping should be based upon your service, nothing else. EVERYONE should have a living wage, if you wish to tip above that... your choice, but it should NEVER be required or added to the bill without your permission.

I'm an Australian who has lived in Australia my whole life. I used to work as a pizza delivery driver when I was young (I'm 54 now) and there were some customers who would, without fail, give a tip of anywhere from $5 to $10 (depending on what they had lying around) and that would be on top of our $17 to $21 per hour wage (this was 2001 to 2011 and pay was "under the table" - tax free...)! There is NO POSSIBLE WAY I could survive on tips alone and I really feel for workers in the US who have to. By the sounds of the change in culture in the US, the consumer will have less incentive to leave a decent tip regardless of the transparency!

Tipping in Europe, The Netherlands: workers get a living wage and tipping by the client is done when the service received was beyond what was deemed normal. It did not come from the US. It's time people in the US get paid normal wages so they have enough for their food and bills, and have some left to enjoy life! It is possible in a rich country like the US if you really want to ... But making money always comes first instead of taking care of the people that allow you to make that money. Take care of them ... They deserve it!

Almost everywhere I go now for take out, if I pay with a card, there's a place to leave a tip. I wasn't even waited on by a server. I don't even believe the workers get the tips.

The tipping culture is brought about by greedy owners. Tip screens start at 18% and I find it disgusting. Much of the time all they did was take my money and hand me something. I stopped tipping unless service is good. Owners not paying employees is a problem that needs to be addressed. It isn't on me to subsidize the owners.

I am a hairstylist and at $13/hour my tips allow me to put gas in my car and actually eat. Anyhow clients add tips on their credit cards so not only do I pay taxes but it bumps up my income to a different bracket where I lost my health insurance. After a 5 days hospitalization and a $35 000 bill, I don’t want tips on my paystubb. People who wants to tip , just get cash and tip in cash please!

I have started to refuse to tip at places where historically in the u.s we never tipped. The donut shop, fast food, vendors at stadium games where you are already paying $5 a water bottle. All these type of places never required tips years ago, employees start at minimum wage. Then everyone started putting out those little buckets for tip. And when square came along everyone leaves the tip option up, even when it is not historically a tipping establishment.

Some super attractive servers get bigger tips while providing less spectacular service.

Tipping is getting way out of hand, but I went through the drive thru at Taco Bell today and they wanted to know if “I’d like to round up my change for charity”? No names, no details, “just charity”. This has happened to me at a few grocery stores lately too. Leave us alone!!!

the whole thing is a bs guilt-trip, sorry. as a customer, I have no interest in knowing how much the person makes and calculating whether I "should" tip. I don't tip for take-out, I stopped getting doordash. when places put automatic 18% gratuity, I don't tip on top of that. I normally tip 20% at restaurants (but on pre-tax amount). the whole thing is completely out of control. a concert venue selling me a $43 t-shirt wanted a tip. Self-checkout machines at airports are now asking for tips. The result will be smaller companies go out of business as people eat out less, bigger companies still survive on the wealthier consumers. on the other hand, $21/hour is not a living wage. That'd qualify you for $1200 rent ... which puts you in the roommate category pretty much anywhere in the country.

Why am I paying for the workers that the business should be paying a wage. The idea of a tip is that I am rewarding a service that has gone above and beyond, not paying a persons salary!

Was at LAX a few days ago (LA airport) and a 2 restaurants were adding 20% tip to the bill if you sat down. We chose to not sit down. It felt so abusive. What if the service is horrible? And 20% on already substantially over-priced airport food. I gladly give 15% or more to good servers, 20% (in cash) to the hard working coffee shop serves, but forcing a party of 2 to pay basically 10$ or more for 1 appetizer and 2 drunks Pulleze. Pay the workers a fair wage!

Yes. I just got back from Europe and some are now requiring a tip. My European friends are upset about because not only do they earn a living wage but they see it a terrible import from the US.

We don't have a tipping culture in Australia. The minimum wage is $23 an hour and goes up each year. Most employers pay more than the minimum wage. All employers must also pay an extra 10% of your wage into your superannuation (pension) account. And we have universal health care, 4-5 weeks paid annual leave with a 17% loading, and paid extra for working on weekends and public holidays. I thought America was the richest country in the world?

I work in the industry in Texas and there is no Rest that pays a real living wage , an average server can make from 28 to 32 an hour no business owner ever will pay that to a server

transparency would be amazing, i was a server and bartender in Pennsylvania we got $2.83 an hour, a guest came in with a friend who was from Ohio. The one guest was trying to tell her friend that we got paid less than $3/hr in PA and her friend didn’t believe her so they just asked me up front. It’s so frustrating because people are getting annoyed by these tip jars, and I totally get it, but there are also people who literally can barely pay the taxes on their wages without the tips.

A tip should only be given when the service is good. If you have to sit and wait and wait and wait, get the wrong food or some such thing, you should not have to tip. This has never happened to me, so I have always tipped well. Automatically adding a tip to your bill is like stealing. Just sayin'. Went to a restaurant once that automatically added a tip to the bill. I didn't know this and so I left a big tip for the waitress/waiter because they were good at the job. Kind of a rip off on the part of the restaurant. I at least hope the waitress/waiter got both tips.

I went into a Subway, and ordered a very basic simple cold sandwich and when i used my card to pay the screen came up with a tip scale beginning at 15% and going up (don't remember how much) and an option to pay something else. I was told the payment would not be taken until i picked a tip amount. I picked the least i could get away with because the person making the sandwich was surly because i wanted more lettuce and spinach on my sandwich, but going back and ordering again is not going to happen. I am retired and i don't have the funds to tip, much less a person who has been rude.

I worked for a place where they started asking for tips at the register with their new point of sales system. We asked what was going to happen to those tips and the owner said "well, those tips are going towards us buying this building..." Every one of us made sure to tell customers who walked in that we don't get tips.

I tended bar for 40yrs the last 20yrs in fine dining I made extremely good money by giving exceptional service & earned every penny. There is a saying that the difference between a proctologist and a bartender is a proctologist only looks at one a**hole at a time Cheers 🥂

If I am considering tipping, I ask the person behind the counter how the tipping works. Do they get it, does it go to a pool with the other workers? There is a small business in the ground floor of the office I work at, I was getting lunch and asked the worker/cook who was checking me out if they received the tips from the tip line on the receipt, and they said "no, those tips were kept by the owner" and then pointed to a tip jar with cash in it and said, "we get to keep those".

Shake Shack has a tip on their kiosks - no counter people anymore. They don't wait on you, should we tip at McD too? It's nuts, just pay your damn empolyees!

Tipping is the customer subsidizing the owner's wages. The owners of businesses should pay their staff and the customer should pay for goods and services. The customers paying for services as well as the employee's wages is moronic.

I reduced the frequency of my visits to places that expect tipping. Those interactions are fraught with too much tension. I feel like no matter what, we all walk away resentful so I just stay away.

There is a bar near me which tried paying a living wage and discouraging tipping. They couldn't keep employees because the bartenders were not making as much money as they did with the server's wage plus tips. I think changing tipping culture in US restaurants would be as difficult as getting the US to switch to the metric system.

Always found it odd coming from the UK. Worked in a motel here in the UK, casual work. Got called to reception to take the bags of two American ladies to their room. So I did and left. Later got called back to reception. The old ladies wondered where I'd gone as they turned to give me a tip and I'd already left. I said thanks. They didn't realise we don't tip in the UK, I was just doing my job.

In Belgium, we tip the waiter or bartender when the service was very nice . Usually in pubs , there is only 1 or 2 waiters and a bartender for a place that handles 100 seats . So we know the waiters are working their a ss of. And also gets a decent wage . But it is not required to tip. I prefer to tip when the work is well deserved. Also, in restaurants or gastro pubs, the tips usually goes 80% for the FOH staff and 20% to the BOH staff. Some places it is 70%/30% or even 50%/50% . Nevertheless, mostly the tips are kept in a pot and we use that to go all together have fun in other pubs or restaurants. Staff that are claiming their tips usually don't last long in the work environment. What I like is that even the dishwasher, the handyman or cleaning lady gets part of the tips. This said every restaurants/ pub / gastropub have a different system. The main rule is that the owner/ boss / manager doesn't touch it. And most of the staff doesn't rely on tips.

If the tip is going through the machine, I don't believe the server gets it all, the tax man and the owner are going to take a piece. In self-serve situations, I am the server and getting paid nothing for it, so the tip goes to me.

I'm old enuf to remember when 10% was a generous tip so I rarely go out to eat anymore because 15% is on the low end now. By the time tips and taxes are applied, the actual cost of a meal out is significantly higher than the price on the menu.

Why is the customer responsible for employee wages? The company needs to pay their people enough to cover living expenses, and stop leaving it up to the customers! Some people might scrape up what money they can find to get that meal, and might not have enough to pay a larger tip. Are they supposed to stay home or get fast food?

I never tip anyone and never will

I used to live in Belgium where a living wage is the standard and tipping is NOT a custom (I think it's similar in most western Euro countries). I'll never forget the time one of my friends left a tip on the table at a cafe we visited for lunch. The server literally chased us out of the place "Hey guys, you forgot your money on the table!!". Too funny :)

I pay CASH at places I get my food... still get the "turn around tip chosing machine". In a split second, I click the 10% because I'm afraid of what button will get pushed next. Then I'm angry at myself the rest of the day!!

My first job was as waitstaff at a private country club. It was also a no-tipping establishment and all the staff got a fair wage. One bonus for that is I got paid the same amount if I was on the floor serving customers as when I was setting up for a banquet or private function. I was paid the same amount while doing sidework as I was when serving tables. It just made sense and allowed all of us to have more flexible working tasks.

So, in 2009 I was a barista at Starbucks. We made $7.00 hourly. Any tips that came in were collected and, on payday, distributed proportionately among the staff depending on hours worked; I.e., larger portions went to full time staff, smaller portions for part time staff. It was welcome among us all, since $7.00 even in 2009 was not a living wage. But, if a customer intended a tip for one person, forget it…we had to pool it all to be divided later. Let me be clear, I do NOT know if this is still how it’s done. I’m sure a lot changed in 15 years. But, now that a customer is kinda shamed into tipping for a latte, it’s worth noting what the culture could still be. And, I’d like to know if the wage is similar. Also, I find it irritating that a billionaire can own Starbucks, can ask $7.00 for a latte, and then expect the public to keep funding their staff so they can continue reporting billion dollar profits. Just my opinion.

I understand the wage issues, but I tip based on the service I receive, period. If I get good service, I'll leave a good tip. If I get great or excellent service, I'll leave a great tip. If I get poor service, I'll leave a poor tip. Now, I'm not like "Mr Pink" where I 'demand' great or exceptional service to justify leaving a mediocre tip (I know Mr Pink doesn't tip :) ). If I'm "forgotten", I won't leave a good tip. If I have to find someone to take my payment, I won't leave a good tip. Outside of that or anything "worse" than that, I'll leave a tip. I don't understand where the "pressure" to leave a tip comes from. If I'm paying the bill, I'll decide what kind of tip to leave. There HAVE been a handful of instances where I didn't leave a tip at all, but those were "extreme" cases where I also didn't return to the restaurant at all.

I despise the push to tip for everything now. It just needs to stop. No person should be expected to supplement a person's pay because they are not paid enough. Most of us are struggling to have financial security ourselves. Take something like UberEats -- well, I never use that now because the fees have become so outrageous besides the expectation to tip the driver. The U.S. has got some serious problems with pay culture.
