Texas Children’s Hospital is home to the Cardiac Developmental Outcomes Program. It is one of only a few such programs in the country specifically designed to support the neurodevelopment of children with congenital heart defects (CHD). Through this program we provide comprehensive and longitudinal neurodevelopmental assessments of infants, toddlers and children who have undergone a significant surgical event.
As our program grows, we are recognizing that more children with complex congenital heart defects, particularly those requiring surgery during infancy, have an increased risk of having challenges with their development, behavior and learning. The Cardiac Developmental Outcomes Program is beneficial as we work closely with children born with complex congenital heart defects and their families to identify neurodevelopmental differences, such as delays in motor, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development, hearing and vision difficulties, and behavioral challenges as early as possible. Through this program we work to detect these difficult issues at their earliest stages, and at a time when intervention can make a difference in the developmental progress of these children.
