Oh my goodness. I literally just texted my cousin to see if she had my Aunts recipe for Texas sheet cake. She’s been gone for 4 years and I miss her and the cake. Thank you for always sharing the most wonderful recipes. I’m the matriarch of our family now and I cook for my son and his family every Wednesday. (My daughter and identical granddaughters are amazing cooks) I love the two of you, you are so beautiful inside and out. I am going to make this also for bible study too! Have a blessed and amazing day. I cannot wait until your next video.

Thank you for giving credit where credit is due to Ladybird. Being a Texas gal myself, this is one of the first cakes my mother taught me to make, I was 8, I am 65 now. The only difference is that we always add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the cake mix. It makes a big difference. Everyone always asks, "What's the difference in your chocolate cake?" It is such a subtle taste that they can not distinguish what it is. Hope you try it.

I can not tell you, how much I enjoy each and everyone of your videos. You have a way about you that makes you feel like your viewers are in your kitchen while you are baking or cooking. I also love how your wife is forever reminding you of stuff. I am the same with my husband. FYI, I freeze my buttermilk in 1/2 cups and put that into a sandwich zip bag, making sure it is really zipped and than lay the bags flat and stack them. I then put them into the freezer until I need them. Depending on how much buttermilk is called for in the recipe I am making I will take one or two bags out of the freezer and put those into the refrigerator overnight to thaw and then in the morning I take the bags out and let the buttermilk come to room temp along with all of the other ingredients. I have been doing this for years. The buttermilk might separate some, but you can shake it, I usually leave it alone and add it to the recipe as is. Just so you know, I am not a new cook or baker, I started doing those things when I was 10, I am now 73. Again, thank you both for this channel. suzie

My sister gave me this recipe back in the 80s, when she moved to Texas. It is called Chocolate Flat Cake. The icing does not use, buttermilk, but evaporated milk instead. And, after putting the frosting on the cake, you put it back in the oven for five minutes to glaze. It makes it wonderful!

My name is Oliver, 86 years old. I have an interesting story about the Texas Chocolate Sheet cake.Years ago, I believe it was in the 60's, My Mother and Father-in law lived in the Dominican Republic. A Dominican lady made them a chocolate cake. It was delicious. My mother-in-law asked for the recipe. The lady refused, said it was a secret family recipe handed down. She finally relented and gave it to my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law gave it to my wife. My wife gave it to whomever wanted it. No longer a secret. In the 1980 I was working in Texas. My wife gave the "Secret Recipe to a very nice German lady there. Figured that's how it got introduced to Texas. To make a long story short. The Secret recipe is the same as the one you posted. It is by far my favorite chocolate cake. Love your show. I watch every episode.

My name is Kent, I'm 69 years old this June 15th. Thanks for posting this. I actually make a Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake as my base cake to make a Mississippi Mud Cake. I make the cake, then I top with marshmallows or marshmallow cream and then top with a chocolate frosting and sprinkle with nuts! ...And, if that wasn't enough, I pair it with Baskin & Robbins Rocky Road Ice Cream; theirs' is the darkest chocolate ice cream! Back in the early 70s this was the most popular dessert at showers and birthday parties. It was known as Linda’s Sister’s Mother’s Chocolate Cookie Sheet Cake. I grew up in the midwest having this cake. I was taught to spread the frosting with the nuts in it......took forever. Now I sprinkle nuts over top of hot baked cake the frost it by drizzling the warm frosting over the nuts. Easy Peasy. Just make sure you don't cut a lot of the tip of the baggy off......you need a small opening to drizzle evenly over cake The heat from frosting and cake will help spread the frosting on its own.

Followed the recipe as you directed and it turned out great! Although I live in Buckley, Washington, I have great memories of Kentucky. My father was from Louisville. My daughter found comments recently that the person substituted sour cream, full fat, for the buttermilk. We decided to try it. It worked great and made the cake nice and moist. We too, have been making the Texas sheet cake for many years. Also, we have a couple family members who do not eat nuts, so we put half of the icing on half of the cake, add 1/2 the amount of nuts in the other 1/2 icing and put that on the remaining cake. This recipe I got back in Junior high in Mrs. Fisk Home Economics Class in New Port Richey, Florida (I am now 62 years old) This was called Sheath Cake. Every time I make it it brings back so many memories. People just go crazy over this cake. Love your channel thank you for all you do.

we love Texas sheet cake here in PA.....I have to make half with nuts and half plain frosting... it's very easy to pour believe it or not! We use walnuts more here than pecans... but we love both! Thanks again for sharing your friend's recipe... she'll forever be in your hearts!

Speak for yourself Tom saying you only want a thin layer of frosting. When I make it I make one and a half times the frosting because I always want more of that delicious frosting. 😂. This cake reminds me of two ladies I worked with in the “90’s. They each had their own recipe and story to this cake. Thank you for the throwback. I love this cake.

When my four children and their spouses have a birthday, I make them whatever dessert they want. This is the cake that one of my son and daughter-in-law request for their birthday dessert. It is very much loved here in Michigan. And I always make my buttermilk the same way you showed on your video. It works great!

It's so nice to hear from you. How nice of you to make a requested cake to celebrate birthdays! I'm sure everyone loves that! We do think it's nice to be able make your own buttermilk. We usually struggle to think up a way to use an entire carton of it before the expiration of it.
