Bring back the mental institutions! The mental health crisis in America is appalling,& only getting worse. People aren't just 'slipping through the cracks'...it's more like a gaping void.
There was a supreme court decision back in the 70's that pretty much put an end to mental health institutions. Basically you can't institutionalize them against their will if they don't pose a threat to themselves or others. This one sure looks to have posed a threat to his neighbors.

Most people involuntarily committed to mental hospitals have committed no crime. Mental institutions have historically been used by oppressive governments to disempower and imprison people that they consider to be undesirable.

Maybe she didn't have sole custody. Some divorced couples get the child 50/50. The courts give the child to the evil parent now, they don't care. The courts like to see the child go to the evil parent, they encourage it.
