Exactly! That was also the intent of the founders of America. Yet, before long it stopped being a secular nation when it adopted christian rhetoric in its economy, government, and pledge of loyalty under threat of hell, but you're still completely free to believe in whichever version of hell you prefer to believe in as long as it's a christian one. You have no public schools or a secular country. But you do have the right idea of how education would work if the US was secular. The founding fathers agree with you, and they had some pretty smart ideas about liberty and human rights. Outdated, but they were on the right track, considering where they came from and what their examples were.

“Christians” trying to tinker with the education system would be shocked to know what America’s history actually is. That our founding fathers were mostly not Christian, but Deist. That one of them was so not Christian that he was the creator of “the Jefferson Bible” in which every mention of God or anything spiritual was stripped out from the Bible and only the remainder left and used to teach the Native American “savages”, despite that same Bible containing explicit instructions to never do that if you’re a follower of Christ. The United States is not and was never meant to be a Christian nation - that’s why you’ll find no mention of God or Christ anywhere in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, or Declaration of Independence. To pretend otherwise is to completely ignore the entire basis of America’s founding in the first place - religious oppression and being forced to follow the religion of The State. But it’s not just U.S. history that’s against this - the Bible itself is as well, and makes this abundantly clear in numerous places. First and foremost, the Ten Commandments, in which Christians are required to have no other gods before God, and to never take the Lord’s name in vain. There always are. The problem with putting "God" into the curriculum _in actual fact_ is that _some_ denomination will end up being chosen for the theology. If it is Catholic, the Protestants will object; if Protestant, the Catholics will object. If it is fundamentalist, the liberals will object and vice versa. What quickly comes clear is that it is still America and even Christians are hopelessly divided in the end on what Christianity is in any detail whatsoever. No Christian wants their kids taught the wrong Christianity in the schools. But, in the end, that's what you get. Some minority wins politically, right up to the moment everyone else comes out of the woodwork to object. All before we consider Jews and (nowadays) even Muslims that will demand some kind of opt-out.

These days, faith and politics, especially in places like Texas, have been alloyed into the same thing. The denominational differences of yesteryear have collapsed in this movement into a single "Christian" identity, paradoxically vs the state and vs any and all political views. Theres different definitions of this, but probably the most broad term is Christian nationalism. Interestingly, and paradoxically, usurping the powers and authority of the state to impose religious teachings isn't actually about religion - it's about power and authority. Then when he tells you it isn't a yes or no question, you just declare his answer to be whichever serves your argument. Like he said: the Bible is not a history book. The Bible isn't even 'a book'; it's several books. Some of them have stories based on history, some do not, some are absolutely pure fantasy. And for them to do what they did is just not right. Now I am an atheist who was raised Catholic, so I am no friend to a Baptist preacher by any measure. So, you have to be pretty far out of line for me to be sticking up for him. But what's right is right and what isn't just isn't. That garbage was not right.

He disagreed with them, so they had to find something, no matter how minor, to delegitimize his position as a leader in their faith. If he's not a "real Christian" then everything he says is wrong. And as a result they can continue to be right. It is a means to an end and for them the end justifies any horrific means no matter how antithetical it is to their own teachings.

Makes it very clear how little these politicians/board members care about their elected responsibilities. However, don't lose hope yet! Our younger generations are starting to realize the danger of being as complacent as we have been, and they're starting to stand up for what they know is right. It won't be long before this shift starts to take hold, and the old minds start to die out. At least that's what I believe :)
