The Federation never bothered with cloaks because they invested entirely in sensor technology. Every time the Romulans/Klingons would find a new way to hide the Federation would find a flaw in it. We saw many times older cloaks were easily penetrated. It was an arms race and the Federation we're confident they would win it.

A non canon novel has Scotty steal a Constitution class museum ship that had the stolen cloak. He used it to sneak into Romulan territory to try and save Spock, but he was captured almost immediately since Romulans had a century to improve on the cloak and also their sensors, so they knew what to look for. Scotty overcame the problem in Star Trek III by routing everything through his 24-century shuttle’s computer, which could easily run the whole ship.

@TriAngulumAudioStudios

Well as you say it's not canon, so it means nothing really... But it would make sense... After all if they use screws it wouldnt make sense not to have screws aboard... But the moment a cloak was built for the Enterprise E would most likely be a violation of the treaty... I would like to note that DS9 used cloaking devices they constructed on the mines, but this must NOT have been a violation since the mines couldnt hold people... Also the Federation had the ability to cloak people in Insurrection... So there are MANY questions surround the Treaty of Algeron...

@@TriAngulumAudioStudios I always assumed that the tech we saw in Insurrection was some sort of holographic tech. Something that occurred to me about cloaking devices is that they don't make sense in the fact that they become invisible in the vast darkness of space and from faraway distances. Also, even if the ship was invisible, it would still be emitting heat and radiation and would still be detected. An example of more realistic cloaking technology would be the Normandy from Mass Effect as it stores the excess heat into an internal heat sink - which can only be done for a limited period of time before it needs venting, or else the crew will be cooked alive. The ship is thus rendered "heatless" and invisible to IR scanners, but does not employ optic camouflage and is still visible to anyone peering out a window.

Why couldn't Star Fleet install cloaks that they bought or were given? The treaty said that Star Fleet couldn't develop a cloak and if another race developed it then that wouldn't break the treaty.
@Jetpackninja

I don't know if we'll ever get a canonical explanation, but I wonder if the reason Enterprise could detect a cloaked Romulan ship in Balance of Terror was because of the method Discovery developed for defeating the Klingon cloak. Basically, the pre-Enterprise Incident Romulan cloak technology was similar enough to the Disco-era Klingon cloak that Starfleet sensors could still faintly detect the cloaked ship.

Another excellent upload. Something that gets me about cloaking technologies in ST is that if only the outside is cloaked, then you'd be able to see the interior, crew, decks, everything. So the cloaking must work all the way through which leads to bigger problems, the crew wouldn't be able to see each other, nor the control panels, or anything at all. That would make things awkward. 😉 Thought of Borg.

@paulscott2037
@paulscott2037 5 лет назад
If I remember my Star Trek fact files correctly, the power demand was only one aspect of the cloak. The cloaking shield also reflected weaponry back at the cloaked ship or otherwise made it behave in unpredictable ways. I suspect part of how they got around this in the case of the BoP and Scimitar is by somehow momentarily weakening or dropping the cloak on one side of the ship which may explain both why the BoP momentarily appears while firing its torpedoes and why starfleet seemingly can't use the gas sniffing photons on any other cloaked ship. The BoP's cloak was inherently weaker to begin with. It's harder to guess with the Scimitar but if I remember Nemesis right they do say the ship has something like Multi-vecteral shielding, which when applied to the cloaking device could mean that while the ship remains under cloak they can fine tune it to only weaken or expose a weapon port rather than the whole side of the ship... I kinda hate the Scimitar though so i don't really want to think about it that much. :p

Let me don my nerd hat for a moment. "Errand of Mercy" - Enterprise is on a war footing, unlikely to be surprised, yet a Klingon vessel gets in firing range without being detected. How? Unless it was cloaked. "Friday's Child" Enterprise pulls into orbit around a seemingly empty Capella, only to find a Klingon agent stating a small scout vessel (Bird of Prey?) Is in orbit. How did Enterprise not see it until it's almost out of sensor range? Answer, Bird of prey cloaks when Enterprise drops out of warp, creeps away only dropping it's cloak at extreme range to get a look at Enterprise, (it's established that cloaked ships cannot see too well). "Elaan of Troyus" the Battlecruiser appears as a "sensor ghost" - all sounds a bit "cloaky" to me! I often wonder of the writers were about to reveal that Klingon ships had cloaking technology in TOS, before the series was cancelled, the clues are there.

Cloaking is also useless! Borg Don't need it, and the Jem'hadar, don't need it.

Nice work. :) BUT: Even if the Federation is a good force in the galaxy, the development of a cloak would be logical, because, it would allow civil ships and science ships to hide against aggressors and would even allow covert help operation, like during a blockade of a planet and, furthermore, cloaking is high-tech, so minor races would be able to construct it, and it would even the playground with other great powers in the galaxy.

Except they couldnt, as they had a Treaty with the Romulans that PREVENTED them from doing that! It was in the Treaty of Algerion!

Of course they should, and did... But MOST of the Series take place while the Treaty is still in effect :P But once it isnt, clearly the Federation DID develop that Tech as seen in Star Trek Discovery! You should also note, that this video was made almost 3 years ago, before that information had come to light!

Technically, the Romulans had cloaking technology before the Klingons did. In Star Trek Enterprise, the first time we see a Romulan Warbird it is decloaking, and then later re-cloaks when the Enterprise is leaving. However, while there were several instances where Klingon vessels were seen throughout the Enterprise show, we never see them cloak. Fun Fact.

Sorry but could you tell me what specifically in the video you're trying to counter with this? Its been a long time since I made this video. Also Fact.

Sorry. I meant no disrespect, I really liked your video. I just wanted to point out that the Romulans had cloaking technology in Star Trek Enterprise. This video talked about the Sulobon (I don’t think I spelled that correctly) cloak, and the Klingon cloak in Discovery, but did not mention the Romulans’ cloaking technology until we get to the original series era. I was just bringing up that the Romulans (as shown on Enterprise) had cloaking technology before the Klingons did. In the video, it implies that the Klingons made it first, when in fact (in the original series) they got their cloaks from the Romulans. Again I mean no disrespect and have the upmost respect for your work. I am simply stating a fun fact.

The cloaking device the Pegasus had wasn't ready a Cloaking device. It was a Faze shifting device. But because it made the ship invisible. They called it a cloaking device. But Star Fleet didn't really break the treaty.

Sorry you are incorrect... The Episode makes VERY clear it WAS a form of cloaking device AND that the Admiral AND Riker broke the treay and as such were arrested at the end of the episode!

The Klingons got the cloak because the people in charge of "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" changed the enemy from the Romulans to the Klingons after the special effects had been completed.
