Personally, I don't open crates to get money, I open crates because A. I'm somewhat new to the game and I don't have much accessories and B. I just want random cosmetics because I don't fell like going and just picking and choosing.
A good alternative for ya could be Halloween Transmutes (pretty cheap to do) or random craft hat crafting (tho you'll lose some value, it's not NEAR as bad as unboxing can be and it's a good way to challenge yourself to make loadouts!) That's what I used to do when I was new, anyways!
Imagine needing social pressure to push for a boycott to not spend money on keys when you can do it by sinply refusing to gamble since it's so pointless
Though how long that'll last. We'll have to wait and see. I say, still wait for a bit. There are still multiple other issues to be addressed, which I doubt they will do. But I think it's only worth supporting Valve if they do more than the bare minimum of maintenance. Though only time will tell if they will.
It depends WHICH secondary market! The Steam Community Market gives a cut to Valve, but sites like backpack, mannco, and marketplace give absolutely nothing to Valve as they are independent transactions/trades between players. I bought all my stuff off of mannco/marketplace, Valve got nothing lol
