I trolled some old threads on the topic, and the best explanation for why it is called Africa is because it’s dark and no one really wants to stay there (because it’s underneath the rest of the map). Definitely racial tones

saying Africans are dark is hardly racist unless you're reallly reaching, or you just personally think that implies something bad and are projecting that onto the rest of the world.
