I'm confused... Says this was developed by "Soleil Ltd." DOA/Ninja Gaiden was made by Team Ninja under Koei Tecmo. And they just put out Rise of the Ronin. I'm assuming this is is a similar situation to the B4B bevs claiming they "made left 4 dead 1".
Squim, there's a fan made port of quake TF that's basically a standalone version of the game you don't need to mod into quake. it has an active community and servers.
I saw some stuff for that when installing the mod but was unsure what changes it might have compared to the original. If any. Like if I were to include the Quake version in the class videos ideally it'd be the original-original with no fan made changes.
FYI, Quake Team Fortress is actually two separate games. You have QTF proper, the original game, released in 1996 and latest version 1.33. And then you have Quake WORLD Team Fortress, released in 1997 and last updated in 1998 with version 2.9. Quake Team Fortress proper also only has 7 classes. Quake World Team Fortress added Spy, Engineer, and Civilian, forming the 10 classes that would stick around until TF2 cut Civilian in the Beta. (Also, Civilian was funnily enough added first of the 3, and Spy was based on an old bug. So Engineer is technically the 'newest' class to the series, coming a year later than the original 5). Oh yeah, and they both have multiple versions. Some of the later ones tied in the common maps like 2fort. Day 1 QTF only had 5 classes, Pyro and Heavy Weapons Guy got added halfway through QTF. Classic is a port of a Half Life mod called HLTF or Half Life Team Fortress. It wasn't updated nearly as often as the Quake version, but there's at least 5 or 6 variants. You've got the original mod, original mod with bugfixes, the PACK-IN release included with Half Life's deluxe edition which added new maps and higher quality models that looked more like Decay or Blueshift and less like the original half-life, the Standalone release from 2003 on CD which tweaked a few things, and the modern Steam release which also tweaked a few things. Most notably however, nobody ever actually fixed the hitboxes. The reason headshots seem ever so slightly off is because they're calibrated for the original models used in the HLTF version, the updated higher quality models used in the later releases are slightly differently shaped. There are servers that play either on the old version or just a modded version of the current version with the old models and that issue is gone. It's also called Team Fortress 1.5 in the standalone release onward.
Thank you so much for this info man, TFC was my introduction to the franchise, around the year 2000 or 2001 & I've always wondered about QTF and never knew anything about it. This creator is dead-on that there is surprisingly very very little info on the game/mod online, almost alarmingly so what with every other thing to have ever existed documented online by now, & also with how popular TF2 is. I usually chime in when topics of tfc spring up but feel like a poser talking about "team fortress back in my day" when I never played QTF. You have filled some gaps in my knowledge & are like a TF historian, haha. From a TF grandpa to a TF great grandpa thanks for taking the time to type this out, especially as I plan to embark on a journey of TF2-based content creation.
Team Fortress Classic was a stop-gap game. It was never supposed to be a full release. The intent was to go straight from Quakeworld Team Fortress to Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms. TFC was just a Half Life mod intended as a bit of a test case. This is ALSO why it's called Team Fortress 1.5 in-game when you launch it and in all the code. Classic was more of a marketing name that Valve kind of got stuck with since they don't own Quake and can't use it's code for sale. OFFICIALLY, Team Fortress is the Quake/Quakeworld game, last version 2.9(which despite the below comment, they're the same game. The name change is simply because Valve released an official multiplayer client for Quake called Quakeworld(as in, playing Quake World Wide) so they started using that instead of custom clients. Under the hood it's the same continious project updated from 1996-1998. Team Fortress 1.5(Sold as TFC) was a stop-gap game based on the Half Life conversion of Team Fortress. Intended to hold people over until Team Fortress 2 was complete. This is also why Team Fortress 1.5 has a realistic artstyle and guns, when both Team Fortress and Team Fortress 2 are more cartoony, it was based on concepts they had planned for Brotherhood of Arms which was way more realistic. Team Fortress 2, the final version, came out in 2007. The Brotherhood of Arms concept was canned since they already had Counterstrike in that niche, and then they tried an alien invasion themed one. Team Fortress, Team Fortress 1.5, and Team Fortress 2. Those are the OFFICIAL OFFICIAL names. You can also call the first one Team Fortress 1, Quake Team Fortress, and Quake World Team Fortress. You can also call 1.5 Team Fortress Classic or Half Life Team Fortress. There are 3 games total.
I love how iirc the final points in CP Well are the fastest-capturing points in the game, taking only 2 seconds - it feels really rewarding considering how the wide open point area is a chore to push through
FYI, Team Fortress Classic is also called 'Team Fortress 1.5' in-game. It's essentially a straight port of Half Life Team Fortress. Quake Team Fortress and Quake World Team Fortress are the real TF1
Im guessing well is called like that because theres some sort of water source underneath that is drained like from a "well". Its even called THE well on the badlands map
The TFC Badlands with all of the canyons you would fall into and have to climb a ladder to get out of really makes it feels like a community map. TFC’s love for elevators is actually something that you’d also find on community maps to be honest
I personally kinda wish TF2 maps were designed in such a way that different classes can interact with them directly in ways specific to that class, like TFC Well did for Demo.
Ravelin from tfc and the second point of hydro are actually quite similar when you compare them. Both are giant concrete bases with bridges spanning over small pools of water, connected by small caves in a mountainside. Consideing the creator of tf2s badlands also made Hydro. I wouldn't be surprised if they used Ravelin as a little inspiration.
We want to see more versus of tfc vs tf2, we still have 4 more mercs to go. Tfc spy vs tf2 spy, tfc engineer vs tf2 engineer, tfc medic vs tf2 medic, tfc demo man vs tf2 demo man
Yooo! I was looking forward to another tfc vs tf2, and with qtf being added too is also very welcome! These videos are so incredible and fun to watch, keep up the good work! (Would like to see a Spy Vs Spy XD)
08:39 Just to let you know, a recreation of this concept art is currently used by the Pre-Fortress 2 mod (I don't know if it's available somewhere else like Gamebanana or Steam Workshop) It is cool and playable, feels open, but still needs grenades and the flag area is pretty accessible, though prone to spamming
HAHA HAHA!! Get it?! The title of the video is “Well, Well, Well…” because SquimJim’s looking at TF2 maps over the years! … It sounded better in my head.
