I do not own either car. I also don't even really care. But this is without a doubt the worst representation/comparison of two cars that I've ever seen. Its hard to compare two cars when you completely handicap one with not knowing how to launch or how to use a dsg transmission. All Audi DSG when going from Park to Drive start in 2nd gear. Because 1st gear and Reverse use the same clutch. The only way around this is to rollout to engage 1stbor use launch control. There is a major difference between turbo lag and starting in 2nd gear.. I guess a dual clutch transmission is too advanced or complicated for this idiot.

Um... this dude didn't even put the car in "dynamic" mode. Seriously... in comfort mode, it cuts the power.

Launch Control takes too long? Yes, shutting off TC and flooring it just takes forever.

i want to ask you a question, did you moved from N to D or S quickly and just take off?? if yes, that explains why, because when you put the Audi in the D , it start first with 2d gear the downs to the frist gear, you have to wait a second then to launch

on the second launch control run you were on tip-tronic mode and you werent shifting. you basically let the car to up shift at red line. this explains why you were much slower. i've been following you guys for over a year because i think you guys are pretty fair and really give us real world results, but this video really pulls me way off. i'm not saying you done this on purpose but i dont believe you didnt realize it either.

Beemer did 5.75, Audi did 5.48, so an absolutely minimal difference. BUT WHY DIDN'T YOU MAKE ANOTHER DRAG RACE VIDEO USING THE LAUCH CONTROL?

The commenters who mentioned the transmission factor were spot on. The DCT of the S3 will lag from idle. As a prior owner of 2 EVO MRs with DCTs this was a constant issue with the cars lurching forward off idle. For daily driving acceleration comparisons I would prefer a 5-60mph run since the vehicle is already rolling and you are just accelerating and letting the car do it's thing.

it is not a matter of turbo lag, it is because of the gearbox, get used to DSG/S-Tronic and you will understand.. I've had stage 2 mk6 gti and stage 2 mk7 gti, the gearbox won't fully engage from start unless you use launch control

You can see the driver of the BMW brake torquing the car. The car lurches forward and the brake lights are still on. The Audi though was not launched using launch control. The brake was released and then it was floored. Thats why the Audi had lag.. The BMW didn't because it was launched correctly.

Must be something in the air. Every single test out there shows that S3 is quicker especially over 1/4 mile. But it is great that there are cheaper options to go quickly.

You gotta hold down the brake firmly to get a clean launch. Dont let rev linger at 4000 just get there and break loose. It takes a little bit of getting used to like all new cars.

So here's a question I haven't seen answered: Was the S3 engine in "dynamic" mode, or comfort or auto? And, was the shifter in "drive" or "sport" mode? And yes, each of these questions relates to separate functions of the Audi.

BMW is doing a remarkable job with turbos. Many of their engines are hitting peak torque at a mere 1500 rpm.

This only happens once after shifting from park. So in the test, it looks like they were starting from 2nd gear according to this (which would not be the case for anyone attempting to beat a 228i at a stoplight).

I sincerely prefer a faster response when overtaking than when starting from a traffic light... And all in all it's hard to believe those results when they are put face to face...

Being that high above sea level makes these figures not that useful for those of us living at normal levels. But its interesting to see the differences using launch control.

Roman- Why didn't you have launch control on during the drag race?

It's not turbo lag... Every Audi with auto trans and quattro has this hesitation from start, if you don't know how to drive them. I had an A8 with gobs of torque and over 300 hp do this, and had the same hesitance with my old A4 and A6. The A8 and A6 were normally aspirated so how could it be turbo lag? Duh! Left in regular drive mode, the software ninnies try to avoid wheel spin, if that makes any sense...maybe that means a launch in 2nd, as stated by others. You put them in manual or sport mode and they blast off.

From experience driving my audi S3 I was able to pull a 4.2 0-60 at 890 feet above sea level in 55 degree weather. But Launch is not always the same because if you dont leave on full boost it wont be as fast. I ran a 13.04 at 103.90 with the DA at 1200 feet above sea level. I think it would run faster but I was not able to time the lights at the race track to leaving on full bars for boost. I can totally understand how the car is a dog without using launch control especially at over a mile above sea level! my 2015 s3 is dead without launch control for the first 1.5 seconds until boost comes on.

Remember turbo lag is amplified in heat or at altitude. The S3 is just about bearable (but pretty poor) around or just over sea level. At a mile up it must be laggy as hell. The BMW doesn't really have turbo lag - it's hardly noticeable that it's turbocharged when driving it normally so a mile up it will have a big advantage in response. This is the difference between engineering for numbers (to brag to other people) and engineering for reliable results in all conditions.

At 5:24 the transmission is on Manual and not sport.. that why it not worker the second time, btw I have one of these and this car is very powerful... can't wait to go on track next summer

This isn't turbo lag, the dsg transmission starts in 2nd, also looks like you are running in comfort mode. I can get much quicker times in mine without launch control.

WRONG, not turbo lag. Launch Control.... DSG has to slip the clutch for easy take offs and it's the reason why it has a slow take off. It is NOT Turbo Lag. You guys are not using the launch control so it engages the DSG immediately. That S3 runs 4.6 0-60 with Launch Control.

Roman makes a great point about launch control. Like when was the last time you used launch control at a red light in your Audi or BMW ? Why do cars come standard with this type of useless stuff ? Even on a circuit, in a starting grid you would use launch control and then what ? Hell with such useless features, I just put it in 1st, rev to 5000 and dump the clutch. Great mash-up though !!

Funny I just bought an s3 today, and it took of a lot faster than that, you wouldn't even notice the turbo lag. Something is not right there!!

I tested drive Audi A3 2018 2.0T. I don’t really like the way it drives. When I floor the gas, it jerks. It’s not as smooth as bmw. I tested drive bmw 230i 2018. People say bmw steeringwheel is heavy but it is not heavy as my old infinity 1999 or Lexus 2004.

I was going to make a comment about how this guy can't drive or just does not understand how to use Launch control..But it looks like many people already posted it.. The Audi actually runs 0-60 in about 4.2 sec it's quicker than the actual times Audi says 4.7 I think... To put the car in launch control you have to put the car in dynamic mode and turn off all the traction control.. Then push the brake and give it full gas.. Release the brake when ready.

So either way the S3 is faster, if I'm racing I will use launch control, takes 5 seconds to set up, not enough time?

If the Audi s3 has a haldex center differential, there's a good chance there is torque limiting in first gear.

The power rating on the Audi is not impressive it's the refinement of that power from that displacement. Let's face it that power from that displacement has been a common place for let's say lancer evo. The power on evos is not nearly refined though.

Top Gear shows the M235i as doing 0-100km/hr in 4.8seconds while the 2015 S3 they show 4.9seconds. So...one tenth of a second away from each other....and mind you...THAT'S THE M....YUP...M235i. Not the 228i. Yea...

Lol turbo lag is your excuse? Switch cars with Andre and you would lose in the bmw. You dont know how to drive you need to hold boost at 4k then stomp it. Your "real world testing" is trash all the time you switch back and forth between launch and no launch. The car is awd it needs to be launched

Comments are mostly ill-informed and presenters didn't quite get it right too: 1) AWD is NOT typically faster off the line (launching) than an RWD. This is a misconception. This is due to the static rotational weight that must get moving to get the car off the line. Exact same cars that have the same engine and weight but with AWD vs RWD, the RWD will launch ahead of the AWD every time simply due to physics. The advantage of AWD will only come into play when the road surface restricts the traction that the tyres have, ie when it is wet. 2) Though "Turbo Lag" does play a part in the initial acceleration of the Audi, it is not the whole story. The presenter alluded to it when he talked about "Throttle Lag". The Audi is slow off the line because the stupid interfering computers fly by wire system restrict the engine output when you ask "100% throttle". The BMW does this too but it does not nearly seem as aggravating as the Audi. With 1 and 2 combined it is easy to understand how the drag race played out. Once a car with similar power to weight ratio (remember the Audi does have more power but is heavier) gets a 10-20 meter launch on you it is very difficult to reel them back in unless you have loads more power. The Audi has a bit more power but not that much more.

Really? I drive an S3 sedan and I have NEVER, repeat NEVER, experienced a lag like this! You did fall asleep... This car may not be the fastest thing on 4 wheels but expecting and gaining sub 5 sec runs 0-100kph are realistic. WHEELS Magazine managed a 4.8s run and a string of 4.9s. I think you had a dud driver and/or a dud vehicle...

What a bunch of clowns, maybe Audi didn't pay enough for a clean launch controlled start lol

So audi claims 4.7 to 60mph and C&D tested 4.4 to 60. Something is wrong with your testing if you are getting 5.1 for your fastest run.

Whats funny also is that amateurs have made videos of themselves launching the car 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. Something, doesn't smell right in the state of denmark. I have launched my S3 at roughly 4.5 seconds but we did it buy hand. You guys should look up those videos and release a disclaimer lol selling false advertisement. This reminds me of the Tesla test were they drove it all day then tested it and said he didn't go as far as they said it would. You guys like beamers better huh? That turbo should have kicked right after launch cause mine does every single time.

Hmm...that non-launch-control-start looks so slow...i guess that can´t be the way audi intended it to work, it must be a pain in normal day driving, for example when you just want to pull fast into a junction...a 1.0 liter fiesta will move faster than this.... too me it doesn´t simply look like turbo lag, because then you would have the same problem while on the move belove certain rpm...seems more like a software problem with the engine management and the s-tronic gearbox (and the high altitude?) - did you guys asked audi about the problem?
